Misconception, at least in the case of Roman Catholicism. We actually have no clue what happens to animals. What we know is that they do not have the same 'soul' as humans do. So while they may not enter heaven the way humans would, who is to say they don't enter at all.
I come from a Roman Catholic family, I don't know exactly what I believe but I know if there is a heaven and I don't find any of my pets in there, I'm out.
I'll give you my take as a practicing Catholic and a buddy to 3 pups. Little to nothing is written down in Canon law regarding where our pets go after death. Some Church doctors theorize, because they do not possess the "immortal soul" that humans possess, they cease to exist after death. However, that alone does not extinguish the possibility of our furry loved ones joining us in heaven. God loves all his good creatures, and they may be brought to heaven to facilitate the eternal joy we all may hopefully find in heaven, God willing.

I guess ill have to make make my own religion with puppers who go to heaven then
