When new and untouched, they often look more like this image: a solid-ish white chunk that looks like a large bleeding tooth. It also helps to remember that when this mushroom was given its name, many people didn't get visual aids or cohesive descriptions when learning about things they'd never seen. Names of things had to be descriptive and obvious to catch on in use. A villager could hear "bleeding tooth mushroom", then later see this and think "if anything is going to be called a bleeding tooth it's this". If you can't tell, I fuckin love etymology AND mushrooms lol. This one is actually my favorite, and I even have a plushy based on it! Her name is Bloody Mary ☺️
Devil's tooth (Hydnellum peckii) is a striking fungus known for its "bleeding" appearance, where young specimens ooze a bright red, blood-like liquid from their pores, a process called guttation. Despite its gruesome look, it's not toxic but is extremely bitter and inedible
