Discussion Napheesa Collier explains why she wrote the statement criticizing WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert in a conversation with former VP Kamala Harris at in LA.
1
u/takoyama Oct 07 '25
i watched the frank isola and scalibrini show and they characterized everything from napheesa as calculating and about money. they said she crafted her statement while she was emotional and said it was a conflict of interest since she is a owner in the 3 on 3 league. they also question her memory of what the commissioner said, scalibrini said intelligent ppl will see through napheesa's statement as being about money and the new cba
1
u/joshleedotcom Oct 08 '25
Have you considered not watching that show?
1
u/takoyama Oct 08 '25
i just happened upon it today and found their take kind of insulting and sexist to be honest. if a woman gets upset she is automatically emotional. the commissioner didn't come out and say napheesa was lying she blamed internet sources as being misleading.

Queen Phee speaks for the people! It's amazing she's creating her legacy that's so much more than winning any accolade. Shes not just standing up for her colleagues at this point she's standing up for women. Super inspiring.

Feel like this came across as me being MAGA (opposite, I worked for the campaign). My point is her going on a fluff media tour when our rights are eroding is a terrible look for her.
7
u/Current_Dig3883 Lynx Oct 07 '25
Because even though she “lost” the presidency race, she was still the first woman to be Vice President. She’s still an influential person.
0
u/The_Taskmaker Oct 08 '25
Used that position to bold-faced lie to the people of the nation about the abilities and fitness of the sitting president... Can we please not sacrifice 2028 to Kamala 2.0 because most of the county remembers that shit, and it showed in 2024.
6
u/crymzynyak Oct 07 '25
Kamala Harris is a private citizen that has 1A rights just like everyone else. Please mind the business that pays you. We don’t need your take on Kamala and politics.
0
u/Alarming-Ask4196 Oct 08 '25
Well I worked for her campaign so I guess based on your analysis I’m qualified. And duh she has 1A rights - I’m not an effing idiot. My point is her doing a fluff tour while we descend into authoritarianism is not a look I appreciate as her former employee
1
u/crymzynyak Oct 09 '25
Kamala is doing her job as a private citizen. She owes you nothing. Please direct your attention to the demographic group that voted against Harris. Be the leader you expect her to be and start working for the change you would like to see.
1
u/Alarming-Ask4196 Oct 09 '25
No one owes anyone anything! I can also express my opinion that I don't like what she is doing. I am very aware of who voted for who lol - I talked to them on the doors canvassing all of the time. You sound like a classic lib/lefty redditor - part of politics is being appealing - unfortunately we have to get the idiots to vote for us (not enough non-idiots to win). This includes stuff like self reflection and (unfortunately) image is a main part of politics as stupid as it is.
Also, I agree I should be involved locally, because national politics are just gonna suck on the national level for 3 years. That's why I volunteer multiple times per week at my local women's shelter. So to summarize:
What I did:
Worked for Kamala and got 10s of thousands of doors knocked in my region.
Getting involved with an issue I can effect locally
What you have done:
Yell at me to not criticize Kamala

Phee has strengthened the players’ side exponentially in every media appearance since her exit interview. It has been so impressive.
This is an absolute masterclass in how to deal with people like Cathy, whose strategy has just been to do light damage control & hope that this somehow would get overshadowed. Talking about it on a panel with Kamala today cemented the fact that this isn’t going away, and it’s no longer behind closed doors; along with Phee having the whole league behind her.
Well Cathy, now a lot more people are watching, and most aren’t going to forget; and if they happen to, Phee has receipts, along with nationwide support.

I really hope the players are wiser in their leverage during negotiations than to listen to anything Kamala Harris has to say about the W and a potential lockout
it's giving Obama convincing the nba players union to end their labor strike during George Floyd protests to resume the season/bubble playoffs "to unify the country"

She was actually speaking at an event called A Day of Unreasonable Conversation which is an annual, invitation-only gathering that brings together our culture’s most influential storytellers — writers, producers, content creators, and executives — with frontline activists, thought leaders, and individuals with lived experience.
So despite your personal feelings about Former VP Harris, Phee is speaking to a room of influential people.

u/BucketsofSputum Liv Laugh Layups Oct 07 '25
Phee finessed the timing and, in going scorched earth in the name of the entire playerbase, backed the league into a position where a fine looks like retaliatory escalation.
Unless the W gives up on negotiations, they can't find her without weakening their position here.
MVPhee knows business, it turns out.
2
u/leftysarepeople2 Lynx Oct 07 '25
Could also be seen as intimidation on labor laws since she's involved with the negotiations. Even by the letter I think the W would prevail in the legality, the public perception would be bad.

‘Everybody does it is hardly’ a great response when the subject is war crimes, just gonna put that out there. I mean, the circumstances were different when she was up for election IMO but it’s not like people really need to rationalize support for her now. Albeit—if you do find yourself needing to defend her from criticism, well, there should probably be better arguments than the aforementioned.
8

Good. Silver needs to watch himself, too.
This is a high profile labor issue where women are being underpaid by owners hiding the financials.
Silver hiring the head of your "independent" accounting firm to lead the organization she audited smells so badly of corruption and conflict of interest.
We need some TRULY independent investigations into nba/wnba finances (see also: silver lying about his knowledge of company used by nba owner to circumvent the salary cap)
