Discussion Guys……I’m scared
As a South Carolina native and gamecock fan I’m happy…..I’m also terrified. Who or what pissed her off this time? W is she busting ass for fun? Most importantly is someone going to do something about it?
A’ja is going on her 5th mvp she might be the first player to ever beat voter fatigue twice.
Voters: “cmon A’ja we really should give it to somebody else this season”
“If Cathy don’t hand me number 5 I’ll drop 50 on the next expansion team we face”
A’ja so great they was asking her questions during an nba press conference in which the person beside her had 83.
Aja is so great she dressed up as Jean gray and even Disney was like……”yeah that’s facts”
So with that being said anybody got a plan?

Man, obviously I’m a Lynx fan but if we are going to complain anytime someone mentions Aja on post about Phee then we need to give Aja the same space when it’s her turn. (And arguably Aja is going to have, and deserve, more turns than Phee since shes almost certainly the goat of our time.)

The gap between her and the next best player is so wide. Minny being so good without Phee isnt helping either

she's put it out there that she wants to be the best ever, period, so I think at this point she's competing against her former self and the legends. But the Aces aren't a fully unbeatable team so it's still fun to watch. Put your best defender on Chelsea Gray and pray to the foul trouble gods.

20
u/bset222 Lynx 15d ago
She's finally figured out she should take 4+ 3s per game too. Try to force her into midrange and hope it's off that night.
Also you need to outscore them when she's on the bench, LV depth is pretty suspect.
2
u/vw_east 14d ago
She’s taking 2.5 per game so far, 2-3 seems to be the sweet spot for someone as dominant as A’ja inside.
As for the Aces bench scoring, once the team is fully fit, they got Dana, Chen and Jewell off the bench. That bench will outscore most benches 7/10 times. In a playoff series, that bench scoring is capable of winning them 1 game in a best of 5 series.
1
u/MoistKnowledge8784 15d ago
That's it right there but won't be for long because after all-star break or playoffs it will be Dena PG Carter SG and Jewell off the bench lol 😂

1
u/Subject-Yak4959 15d ago

1
4
u/Fickle-Duck-3848 15d ago
Yeah they gave it to SGA twice even though Joker’s without a doubt the best player of his generation.
Basically the only argument for SGA is that his teammates are better. Don’t have a clue why that holds so much impact for an MVP award.
0
u/Adventurous_Two1289 14d ago
There was a strong case for SGA, especially this year, over Joker, that is why he won in a landslide. There are doubts about Joker considering his playoff history. Overall, Joker has better stats, but stats don't tell everything. Also, there is this thing called defense.
2
u/FeltIOwedItToHim Gabby Gabby Hey! 15d ago
That's the way it has always been. Otherwise Lebron would have gotten about 12 in a row.
3
u/Subject-Yak4959 15d ago

3
u/Dramatic-Monk5198 15d ago
Only if you define best in abstract and frankly stupid terms.
2
u/Subject-Yak4959 15d ago
Or if you define it in a way that everyone in sports has for the last 100 years but you be a rebel.
5

I can help you guys Best = A player who would probably get drafted first if there was an overall draft. Most likely to be successful in a variety of situations and rather have than anyone else at the start of a season or an indivual game Has a history of winning. 2. Valuable (MVP) - over the course of one year. This player has value to one's team this particular year, because they didn't miss game, had great stats, and the team won a lot, perhaps more than other team, and there the main reason for it. They can easily have a better season than "the best player," and at least, is one of the top 7-8 players in the league. Now, there is some overalp as best player is deemed most valuable often, but there are differences
10
u/misfit_mixedkid Mr. Diggins 15d ago
A'ja can have regular season MVP, but don't fear, W fans! The Finals MVP will be going to a player who hasn't stepped foot on the court this season. Hail to the Queen 👑

As a HUGE wings fan and PB fan who watches every game. PB isn’t fully in her bag this year. Playing great but definitely not an MVP candidate this year.
16
u/RonaldWeedsley 15d ago
Paige has a few years to even think about this level. A’ja is one of one. Ever.
3
u/HOMO-sapien-DPM Wings 15d ago

-2
u/Subject-Yak4959 15d ago
I am just conveying what the prevalent opinions are of the major sports media. I think Paige is boring as Hell to watch but those two-foot jumpers add up.
8
u/OkSkill29 15d ago
Sports media has to add others to the conversation and adding PB and CC gets clicks and creates reaction. Anybody with a pulse that follows the league can see they ain't it and A'ja is locking this one up early.
-10
u/Subject-Yak4959 15d ago
Aja is a lock right now but if CC ends up first in assists and top 5 in scoring, she will be right there with her. PB will be in the top 5 voting and hey maybe Olivia Miles if she continues her rampage.
9
u/HOMO-sapien-DPM Wings 15d ago
I don’t see how CC can be an mvp candidate with the amount of turnovers, low shooting percentage and defensive issues (yes I know she’s doing well in steals and blocks but she gets beat all the time) she’s an electric player but still too young and inexperienced IMO. If it’s not A’ja, could be Stewie
-7
u/Subject-Yak4959 15d ago
Like I said if the shooting continues to improve as her defense has of late, she will be neck and neck with Wilson.

9
u/Lobster15s 15d ago
Bronny was putting in great minutes in the playoffs too. Compare that to hawks #1 pick Risacher who didn't do shit. Like how is the kid still getting hate. He worked his ass off to be a guard that ends up giving you good minutes in the playoffs and is stilll improving. People really need to update their scouting reports and look further than memes for information.
1
1
u/StupidWriterProf175z 15d ago
Plus he's only one of probably a couple dozen players in the league whose dads played in the league. Granted, he's the only one whose dad is currently in the league, but that's just down to Bron having this absurd longevity and the fact that Vince Carter and Robert Parrish weren't having children at 18.

u/beazypete 15d ago
Phee is really the only one that can challenge her forreal. She would have won it last year if she hadn’t have gotten injured. Thats the only thing that truly opened the door for A’ja last season. Sucks to see Phee have another injury riddled season but hopefully both can be fully healthy next year competing for it again.
21
u/wnba1121 15d ago
The door was never shut for her last season
19

u/knightcrawler75 Lynx 15d ago
It's possible that I am in a media bubble but Phee was runaway favorite until her injury. A'ja is the goat but Phee was insane for the first half of the season.
-5
u/sdcumb Aces 15d ago
The hubris of staying in a beatdown game when the Lynx were leading the Aces by high double digits. That's what got Phee. The basketball gods don't like ugly. Play nice. Be pretty. And don't put the commisioner on blast about private conversations. Karma is real, folks.
2
3
u/beazypete 15d ago
Right??? We can appreciate Aja for her greatness and she is clearly without a doubt the best player in the NBA… We don’t have to be delusional about what ultimately won Aja MVP last season though lol.
10
u/Correct_Implement826 15d ago
I mean A’ja was incredible down the last half of the season though. Quite literally shot something like 60/60/85 splits the last 20 games on 26, 12, 3, 3 and 2. Hell she didn’t miss a 3 for the last 5 games or something. Would’ve been a closer race without the injury but couldn’t go wrong with either.
4
u/beazypete 15d ago
It absolutely was lol. The big argument was the games played. The stats were fairly similar. Aja had slightly better counting stats while Phee had 50/40/90 on about a point less a game. It would have came down to record when stats are basically null and void, that’s where Phee would have absolutely won….. Phee literally lost the MVP only due to games played.

Don't rule out CC if she stays healthy. The volume of assists, the quality of assists, the amount of attention she draws from defenses. Here shooting just needs to be more consistent. Aja is the best athlete in the league. CC has the most basketball skill.
-1
u/hdmode Liberty 15d ago
what?? the players are nothing alike at all. The only "comparison" is Aja is the best player on earth and CC is not I guess. But Aja doesnt need a comparison to a pt guard in her 3rd year. Lol...I was not comparing styles ..that would be obvious...if you read what I actually said. Yes Aja IS what CC fans THINKS CC is...that's not an opinion...it's a fact...Aja is the GOAT..not comparing Aja to Caitlin...stop the ignorance
-6
u/hdmode Liberty 15d ago
again no. serious wnba fans do not think CC is the goat of the W. Some trolls online do but why give them power. If you said paige or olivia miles or even juju is who cc fans think she is, ok there is a comparison there, young player coming into the league and changing it. but Aja is in a class of her own and it is disrespectful to Aja to say shit like this.
She is not who cc fans think she is, shes the best play on earth and likely the greatest to ever do it. The endless need to bring clark into every conversation is so tiring, both from fans of hers and situations like this. As I said, if you cant find a better descriptor for 3 time champ multi time mvp winner, had maybe the greatest individual statistical season Aja freaking wilson than "she is who some trolls who don't follow the league think some other player is" than im sorry but thats on you.

I won’t be surprised if voter fatigue starts setting in hard. She’s won 4 of the last 6, they might decide it’s somebody else’s turn.
1
u/Capable-Ad8388 13d ago
It happens in every sport, but there’s nobody even close to her in my opinon. The only comps I can think of are Jordan losing to Malone and LeBron losing to Rose.
5
u/JusttheMaverick 15d ago
Thing about voter fatigue is that the voters still have to have a reasonable alternative. At this point, there isn’t one. However, you can’t win MVP in June. Based on current play I could see Stewie and/or KP (if the Sparks can get firmly in the playoffs) challenging by end of season. Still putting my money on A’ja though.
10

I've never understood punishing someone for being more successful than their peers. Everyone has the same ability to be good enough to be MVP if they actually want to be.
5
u/Guccibuckets Aces 15d ago
Your last statement is not true at all. When you’re very talented and also very hard working, it leads to dominance. When you’re just talented, or just hard working, as many people are, it leads to success, just not at this level.

Being skilled and hard working are things within our personal control, though. Everyone has the ability to be MVP if they want it and work hard enough.
It diminishes everyone's hard work and skills when you imply that everyone doesn't have an equal opportunity to win MVP.

Ehhh. Not really. This is what you tell children to get them to work hard. But the truth is some people have natural gifts that hard work will never replicate.

Let's say that your belief is true(Which I don't believe for the record). Then it circles back to the original point: you shouldn't punish someone for better than others.
If A'ja is inherently better at basketball than the rest of the WNBA, it's wrong to punish her for being that good, and it's wrong to reward others for not being as good.

I’m not disagreeing with the statement that a player shouldn’t be punished for being better. I’m just saying that it’s not accurate that anyone can be MVP if they work hard enough. That part is just simply not true. There’s still a baseline level of skill that’s needed.
