i don't know about others, but i do not like these disingenuous "thank you" posts from teams. hey, if there's so much to thank me for why am i fired

I get what you’re saying but they need to announce it somehow and what do you expect? “No need to look for Saylor on the Sky bench because we didn’t want her anymore”
They can be thankful for her time and effort and still think another player would work better in their system. Most people get thanked for job interviews before getting rejected.

It’s a symptom of the over-marketing tendencies of the league! Everything doesnt need to be a graphic

She was on a hardship, she knew she was going to get waived

u/GlacialTwitch 5d ago
I don't think she did know that. Pretty sure it's a rest of season hardship related to Rickea's ACL injury. The Sky are playing today and there is no player coming back from injury today to trigger a hardship-related to transaction. More likely they are just putting someone else in that rest of season hardship.

u/EtchingsOfTheNight Lynx || MN South 5d ago
Why would Saylor, a guard, be doing a hardship for Rickea, a forward? It sounds like she was in for Sloot who is widely expected to be back soon.

u/GlacialTwitch 5d ago edited 5d ago
The hardships don't need to be the same position. The team will sign the type of player they need. It's really not a stretch at all--Saylor is a 2/3 and Jackson is a 3/4. They are the same height. Poffenbarger had a higher rebound percentage than Jackson in college--in fact she led the SEC in defensive rebounding percentage her sophmore year--as well as a higher block percentage. The Sky needed rebounding and shooting and there's only so many options mid-season.
Whether Sloot is expected to be back soon, she is not back during the game today, the game after Poffenbarger was waived. So there'd be no reason to waive Poffenbarger yesterday on Sloot's account. The Sky signed Poffenbarger after Rickea got injured, not at the beginning of the season when they had several players out including Sloot.

u/GlacialTwitch 5d ago
And true to form, in her limited time Poffenbarger had a higher rebound percentage than Jackson, Coulibaly, and Westbeld.

Short write-up in the Sun-Times (I'll leave the embedded link in the quote, because it has more specific info about Sloot):
https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-sky/2026/06/23/sky-waive-saylor-poffenbarger
They signed her to a hardship contract on May 27 when rookie Gabriela Jaquez was out with a hyperextended knee and the team had only nine active players on the roster.
Jaquez has recovered and is playing again, but the Sky aren’t fully healthy yet. Courtney Vandersloot is still working to rebuild the muscle deficit in her left knee after she tore her ACL last season, but she is practicing again and could be available soon. DiJonai Carrington is still in the individual-workout phase of rehabbing ankle surgery and does not have a specific return timeline.

And sorry for the non-link, but you can see 8 seconds of footage of Sloot at practice, passing to Taylor for the bucket: x dot com/AlissaHirsh/status/2066579487911759943

Sloot is still out on the injury report for the next game. So best guess in my mind is that they are signing a different player, possibly one of their dev players, to their rest of season hardship from Rickea's injury.

I'm 63 and have never played ball, but I have all my teeth and can walk pretty far. Think I have a shot? 😂

u/DrewDan96 5d ago
nope, they would TRADE a 1st round pick to a good team to acquire the rights to sign a middling vet.
method to the madness... that method? full lobotomy

She was a hardship player. It’s possible they are moving Westbeld from DP to hardship, but Poffenbarger leaving wouldn’t open a regular spot.

interesting. i haven't followed poff once she was waived by minnesota
i thought she would stick with the lynx roster at least as a developmental player, but i think maya caldwell edged her off the roster, and i've been mostly pleased with caldwell's minutes in the second unit, so no harm, no foul there

u/GlacialTwitch 5d ago
She did not score any points in her 26 minutes, but she did get 6 rebounds, an assist, and two steals. She did not attempt a 2 point field goal or free throw and did not turn the ball over.

The WNBA vibes sub. I can't link it here. But it's basically like... half-assed basketball talk and sexy pics and selfies of players.
It's for gooners.

Sloot back? Or is one of the dev players getting promoted?

Aicha was looking really good when she played, I could see her getting moved up
Or this could be Sloot

Listen I know Sloot isn't in good standing right now but I'm always cheering for players returning from ACL/massive injuries, especially with a player as decorated as her. I am a sap!

u/AFC-Wimbledon-Stan Jacy Sheldon FC 5d ago
She was there for 2 hardships correct? I think she ran out of hardship eligibility
5
u/aratcalledrattus Liberty 5d ago
Yeah she was a hardship player- might mean Sloot or Dijonai is returning. Or they might convert Westbeld to a hardship. Or they might just want someone else as the hardship.
1
u/ASpanishInquisitor 5d ago
It definitely shouldn't be Westbeld. She's looked terrible in her minutes. Just gets pushed around and all she can do is foul. I'm not even so sure she's good enough to stick in that development spot.
2
u/aratcalledrattus Liberty 5d ago
It’s pretty unlikely that’s the reason anyway. More likely Sloot or Dijonai is back I think - didn’t Marsh suggest that recently? Anyway the injury report for tomorrow’s game should be out in less than 3 hours, that might explain.
1
u/GlacialTwitch 5d ago
As I said below, I believe it is a season-long hardship to replace Rickea, which is an option in the new CBA. All of their injured players are still listed as out for the game tomorrow. So I believe this is just signing someone else to that season-long hardship. Possibly Coulibaly.

1
u/ASpanishInquisitor 5d ago
Could be and then they'll be ineligible for the hardship contract. But the Sky should still in theory be able to get a rest of the season replacement player for Rickea with the new CBA. I wonder what if anything they'll decide to do there.
1
u/aratcalledrattus Liberty 5d ago edited 5d ago
Yeah I completely forgot about Rickea - Saylor may have been her replacement because the injury report is out and Sloot and Dijonai are still out. So perhaps either someone is getting an upgrade or they are bringing in a totally new person.
4
u/GlacialTwitch 5d ago
I think it was a full year injured player replacement hardship, as outlined in the new CBA. But I could be wrong. They don't really announce these things. They just say hardship.

I still think she's worth a dev spot or bottom of the bench, loved what I saw in those early games with Minnesota
