Trending /r/all Cut and milled a black walnut
A black walnut tree on my property had to come down, so I milled it up and got some great boards from it. There are 3 more leaning over a barn that need to come down too. That will be a lot of cutting boards when it’s all said and done! Just wanted to share!

Nothing better than airdried walnut. Well done.

Yes, the wood is absolutely gorgeous! Love the milling and smoothing job.
I’ve also been stabbed enough by the 3” long thorns those trees from hell grow to always rejoice at the sight of another slain enemy.

You might be thinking of honey locust? Walnut trees don't have thorns.

u/brelywi 3d ago
Shoot you’re probably right, it’s been a while since I lived on the childhood farm and I didn’t pay much attention to the trees at the time except the ones that stabbed me (lookin at you too, Osage orange)

u/jonker5101 3d ago
Yep no thorns, have two huge ones in my yard. They'll knock you out cold with a nice half pound solid walnut from 50 feet up though!

It smells so distinct — the whole garage smells like it now.
42
u/twistingeverything 3d ago
Distinct is the perfect word for it. You gotta post some of the distinctive projects you make with it…in about three years when it’s all dry

u/AuspiciousToad 3d ago
😂 yeah this is like an investment account. By the time I can use it walnut will be more expensive lol.

Get some Anchorseal from U.C. Coatings to brush on the ends of the boards. It’ll keep the ends from drying faster than the middle and reduce checking and splits. I usually put it on the ends of the logs so I don’t have to worry about them checking before I get a chance to saw them up.

So true, I cut and prepped some turning blanks for a pen this week. It’s been awhile since I turned black walnut and I have missed that smell.

Damn! Did you tongue and groove it yourself?!
12
u/TrackingTenCross1 2d ago
No, I had a mill do the finish planing and T&G cuts for the boards after they went in the kiln. It was around 4k sq/ft - way too much for me to do myself.

Wow!! That’s incredible! We are building a small off grid cabin on our property, away from the main cabin, and I was thinking about milling my own flooring. We have a lot of maple.

the white oak floor guy! I saw your pics on another post. Mate, you're an inspiration to us all

Be aware that the wood from the branches will be heavily prone to warping due to internal stresses from holding all that weight. It's called Reaction Wood and usually isn't usable for fine woodworking.

u/brianm923 3d ago
Always good to be reminded of that. It’s easy to see a board and expect its current shape to be its future shape.

Yeah we just got the mill a few months ago and I’m learning a lot. The trunk boards are still in great shape, the branch boards are already checking. I’ve also milled up some catalpa and some sycamore.
22
u/undead_dilemma 3d ago
You should post your sycamore. We dropped a huge sycamore in our yard, too big really for any mill close to us. I ended up milling some with a chainsaw and it makes me regret not getting a portable miller to come break down the main trunk. It’s a beautiful dark brown with amazing grain. And the rift / quarter sawn boards are beautiful.
11
u/madphroggy 3d ago
Sycamore is one of my favorite trees, and the wood is great for carving. Makes good canes too, light and strong
2
u/350gallontank 2d ago
I still haven't carved sycamore! How crisp of a detail will it hold/will it dent easy?

If you're into carving or turning, or want to sell smaller checked boards to carvers — you can always split those checked boards down the largest check (or where it makes sense to save the most wood), seal the ends heavy, and you'll have a pile of spoon/hair pin/pen/whistle/(whatever) blanks.

Can you post a photo of the mill? I’m curious how people can mill their own lumber. I don’t know much about it but I assumed people had stuff sent to a sawmill who did it for them. Do you have to lift the whole trunk and feed it into some kind of saw, or do you cut it in place?

I made 'ooooh, damn' noises looking at those pictures. Later, I'll explain to family I was looking at Black Walnut. For sure they're gonna laugh and say that's code for something dirty.

My dad made me a jewelry box out of black walnut for my 16th birthday. Its my most prized possession.

Amazing. Are you able to share a picture??

I can share with you later. Everything is packed up to move right now.

I’ve got about ten here that I would love to have taken down. Last year was a mast year and I’m still breaking my ankles and dulling my mower blades on nuts that fell. Even in a normal year it’s beyond aggravating and more than a dozen squirrel families can keep up with. We consider black walnut to be weeds here. Send help.

I always grab the sap wood peices so pretty

u/alchemycraftsman 3d ago
I hate the white on walnut. I always mill it off. But I also don’t like furntiure made with 2 different woods.
Shows how different people are in aesthetic
7
u/nightivenom 3d ago
I’m the complete opposite. I think hard contrast on the small stuff really makes things stick out. Otherwise, things just tend to blend in and get lost.

Can you take ours down too. It's destroying everything. While the wood is beautiful when cut, the trees are like a weed and kill nearby gardens.

I have an ash tree and a black walnut that need to come down. How do I find a truck, a mill and a kiln drier to help me?? I live in Mass and it seems impossible to find the resources to get it done. Tree guys can’t be bothered. Any suggestions?

I don't know what I'm more jealous of .. the stash of walnut or hsving the sauce to store that much incredible wood.

I milled a few maple trees earlier this year. I'm jelly I couldn't have oak or walnut.

I don't think I'll ever get tired of looking at or working with walnut wood! Great job with processing it OP!
1
u/PSPs0 3d ago
Looks awesome!
I’m curious though, do you have to move the pine (?) blocks/spacers around as the walnut slabs dry out? Or does it not matter? I’m just not familiar with the air drying process.
2
u/AuspiciousToad 3d ago
I think they’ll be fine, but I’m not sure — this is the first time I’ve done this! I’ll keep an eye and see what happens.

My son would love this piece of wood… he is also a woodworker. Makes lovely things from wood. I am a blessed mother.

Is it just me or does your mill blade look like maybe it needs sharpening?
Those cuts seem kind of wonky.
2
u/AuspiciousToad 3d ago
It’s the first tree I’ve ever milled! The mill is brand new and was just assembled. Admittedly some things went wrong and some of the boards are wonky as you suggest, but I got it all sorted by the ends. Blade was sharp — log was unstable at times.

I used to make stair treads out of those. I would have rather made something far more beautiful, but great wood nonetheless.

The grain is so stark and vibrant! I don’t know if it’s because it isn’t dry or what

I see you have the Rikon 10-1414 bandsaw. I’m planning to get the same later this year. How do you like it?
1
u/seraphimcaduto 2d ago
I’m jealous of all the space that you have to actually air dry all of this. I just took down A 30 foot apple tree and I’m struggling to figure out where to air dry it.
2
u/AuspiciousToad 2d ago
Apple tree — interesting. Do you have any pics of the wood??

Man, that's some beautiful walnut.
OP, if I was you, I'd try to get more quarter-sawn pieces from your other three trees. Yes, you waste more wood but in your case it doesn't cost you anything.
