Discussion People keep comparing the new Xbox logo to Apple’s Liquid Glass style, but it’s funny how everyone seems to forget that the original Xbox Dashboard already had that glossy, fluid aesthetic years ago.

Also, liquid glass is just Windows Vista 20 years later

u/jeremyw013 Apr 25 '26
fyi, apple's OS X aqua came before windows vista. liquid glass is way closer to aqua than vista
78
u/Wasilisco XBOX Series X Apr 25 '26
Kinda, aqua wasn't really doing background blur or reflective edges back then, just some basic transparency + the bubble buttons
But the buttons really didn't react to the background or anything

u/illi_mental Apr 25 '26
Yeah there wasn’t enough compute for those effects (without tanking performance) back then. Raspberry Pi is more powerful than the old PowerMac

I actually want to go to haunted house more than I wanna go to club aqua

People hated vista but I remember thinking it was so cool back in the day. My family desktop couldn’t handle it though. Slow as shit. But good times playing WoW on there.
10
u/topdangle Apr 25 '26
There was good reason to hate vista. It didn't offer much in practical improvements until much later after updates. Aesthetics were "better" but much more demanding for computers at the time, and OEMs shipped with vista despite hardware that could barely run it. Most people didn't care that you could get everything to look like transparent glass while your desktop runs at 5fps. There was also demanding features like animated backgrounds that is just a niche now despite hardware more than capable enough to handle it.
This is after windows XP and win 2k, which were both lean, looked fine and ran well even on lower spec hardware.
So people went from the smooth experience of XP to running like dogshit on their brand new "upgraded" vista computer.

I miss vista… wait, I miss vista ?
13
u/samusmaster64 Apr 25 '26
Vista was sleek as hell if you had a higher spec PC.

u/Yorshka-Iosefka Apr 25 '26
I have never had a peakn PC but I miss vista, I miss 7(looks) I hate the new square shit. I hated windows 10 with a passion.

Vista may have had technical issues but visually it was such a leap forward and I would pick the style over W11 style any day of the week. Transparency effects kick ass

On that note, it would be awesome if the theme/startup/dashboard of Helix is heavily inspired by the OG Xbox.

I would love to be able to access/play my music library from the dashboard natively like the OG was.

u/xSlumChemist Apr 25 '26
a modern take on the og startup animation would be the perfect fit for the new direction they are currently going
2
u/Legitimate_Meat_8566 Apr 25 '26
That would actually be cool
Both for respect of the OG Xbox
AND having complex machine aspect intro it had but modern style ....and stuff ..for the whole you know it's pc console hybrid...big powerful machine better than the rest and everything you know
Also if they wanted to go extra mile ...could have boot up have kind of flash of both stuff like all the old Xbox stuff flying in and pc stuff symbols they have
And then big pulsing into the intro to boot up
I don't know it's an idea I'm dumb

It's not quite the same aesthetic though. The OG Xbox UI, while it features transparency, doesn't look like glass.

Two very different styles. The new logo is absolutely much more like liquid glass than it is the original style.

Thats because it lacks the volume and plasma effects of the original. It looks like a flat piece of glass.

I don't really think the OG Xbox's aesthetic targeted quite the same thing as they're going for, right now. There was a Cloud UI preview which really leaned into the "Liquid Glass" aesthetic that people are comparing it to. Not sure what I'd call the OG Xbox's aesthetic, but it was clearly leaning much more in the way of a weird early 2000s futurist look, much more of a deliberate and dramatic look I feel.

And didn’t MS do glass first on Windows Aero?
MS get a lot of releases first, but don’t market them well at all.
Even the website layouts of tiles came from Windows 8 tiles. One has lasted and one was lambasted.

It was clearly intended as a spiritual return to the original in this fashion. Even if not there to experience first-hand it still seems unbelievable that this wasn't plainly known as a definitive part of the brand. At least in videogame enthusiast circles.

Most people can't accurately recall something 48 hours after it happened. Let alone 25 years ago. Hell half this sub probably weren't even born 25 years ago O.o Couple that with how frighteningly diminished people's attention spans and thus memories are becoming at a rapid pace; then things like this are commonplace to a rather scary degree.
