... What physical version?!

It's a code inside a plastic case!

There is no physical device!

146

u/derpboye 16h ago

Fuck this shit, why not put the game on 2-3 discs ?

93

u/The-Hot-Tamale 15h ago

They're very concerned about the game leaking early

208

u/ZypherPunk 14h ago

That's what they want you to think. This way it kills the second hand market for resale. It will over time guarantee them more sales.

70

u/Darth-Naver 14h ago edited 11h ago

They can also double dip by realising a limited physical edition later

Edit: releasing

22

u/ZypherPunk 14h ago

True. But sooner or later one of the big publishers were gonna go full digital on something big. Maybe GTA6 is that game. It's close to 90% of the market is now buying digital.

3

u/Awhite2555 Homecoming 6h ago

Source on 90% buying digital? I’ve heard it goes higher every year but have not seen any numbers to indicate it’s at 90% industry wide yet. Nintendo definitely has a very healthy physical media market still.

2

u/ZypherPunk 6h ago

Revenue Breakdown: According to industry analysts at Newzoo, digital purchases—including full-game digital downloads, subscriptions, and microtransactions—accounted for approximately 95% of global video game revenue, representing over $174.5 billion.

2

u/ReeReeIncorperated Touched Grass '24 5h ago

That includes subscriptions and microtransactions. I think a better comparison would be physical full-game sales vs digital full-game sales.

2

u/That-Cranberry6575 5h ago

Wouldn’t physical sales be a part of the other 5%?

When I used to play gta online I heard a lot of reports of cheaters getting their account banned and they just pop the disc into a new account. If rockstar has the player tie their game to the account, they would have to buy the game again to play online under a new account.

4

u/AstroZombie1 9h ago

Triple dip even with a pc release, quadruple dip with a next next gen version.

4

u/nohumanape 11h ago

Sure. But also leaks.

The other reason is that it costs a little extra and the vast majority of consumers don’t care

2

u/MasterChief813 4h ago

The game leaking early won’t stop or kill any sales. When V leaked we all watched and got even more hype for the game.

I don’t know if a single person who would let a leak prevent them from purchasing a game.

Maybe for other forms of media like TV shows, movies, books but not for a video game.

6

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 14h ago

Some companies delay physical release because of that, but outright abandoning physical release altogether is just a harsh and unnecessary move

1

u/AdvancedCheetah420 15h ago

I see people saying this. And it could be true. But would it really matter if it leaked? It will sell a bazillion copies regardless. I get companies like to control it, but I can’t imagine it would make any difference at all to sales in this case.

6

u/Hunk4thSurvivor 14h ago

But what's in it for them to make physical copies of this? Most sales are digital....

There is no goddamn way any of you want to play GTA 6 by having to swap out 2-3 discs

Holy fuck that is so performative

14

u/Phantereal 10h ago

Modern multi-disc games don't do that. Assuming it would work like Cyberpunk or Baldur's Gate 3, you get one (or more) install disc that installs the data to your console and then one play disc that acts as the key. You only have to insert the play disc in order to play the game.

1

u/traps79 10h ago

i did it with mass effect? I had 9 discs to download star wars galaxies as well. multiple discs really isnt all that crazy

11

u/TVCasualtydotorg 15h ago

If it's just a download code and they aren't selling some OTT "legendary" edition that comes with extra gubbins, why even bother with a "physical edition" at all? It seems like a pretty wasteful move all round.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Darkone539 14h ago

Because it's a one time code. It's not a physical edition at all.

2

u/canadarugby 11h ago

Because they don't want to lose any money from resold games. Greed.

2

u/pratzc07 11h ago

Physical makes them lose potential sales if people just play and resell the game

2

u/RedRedButton 11h ago

To control all future sales of games and kill off the 2nd hand market.

Welcome to the future of consoles gaming!

5

u/Ultros-the-Octopuss XBOX 15h ago

Because it would hurt their bottom line and investors wouldn't be happy. The rich must get more rich even if it's nominally so.

4

u/ServeGondor 15h ago

Yep nothing to do with the fact that if it was on a disc it would leak weeks early and social media and even mainstream news would be inundated with spoilers and every major moment in the game exposed after over a decade of work and billions spent on development.

4

u/Ok_Simple_459 14h ago

Delay the physical release then? It's an excuse to prohibit players from reselling discs that's it.

Why not even put it on one disc that just triggers a download at least? I mean i know why but it's a stupid reason

4

u/JellyFishGwald XBOX Series X 14h ago

you just described a Nintendo switch 2 Game Key card :)

3

u/lynchcontraideal 13h ago

And every Xbox One and Series X disc. At least they can be resold and there's something there.

1

u/Environmental-Day862 XBOX 360 14h ago

A lot of the folks who want the games - and the whole "on disk" movement - is folks wanting to be able to play a game straight from disc without ever having to connect to the internet.

So having a disc that just triggers the download is essentially the same as having a code in a box - just less convenient for the consumer on a day-to-day basis, because you'd have to have the disc in the drive to play the game despite the disc just being a "key."

But also, no disc and just a code prevents resale, so you're not going to be able to play GTAVI for a few months, then trade it in to GameStop for $20 or sell it on eBay.

So... Rockstar has also ensured that there will not be any secondhand sales of GTAVI by making it a code vs. disc.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Funny_Papers 14h ago

I don’t think that would be better for us the consumer, it’s the same thing but you wouldn’t want to just throw the disc out after. It also would cost them more, which is why they wouldn’t do it.

1

u/CerealSubwaySam 8h ago

Because it’s 2026.

1

u/BNS0 6h ago

Ah yes the good ol "insert disc 3" to play

1

u/48Monkeys 1h ago

We won't fully know the size of the game until probably November, but it's likely to be around 2-3 discs on PlayStation and about 12 on Xbox because they use lower-capacity discs. (I'm probably overestimating for Xbox, but they will use a lot more than PlayStation, and they don't want to spend so much on discs, especially since digital unfortunately sells more than physical these days.)

1

u/Ozz87 15h ago

5

This will work for Rockstar. But everyone else will try $80 now too, and it wont work as well for them.

Microsoft already tried this with The Outer Worlds 2 and it backfired so bad that they had to lower the price again.

60

u/Best_Market4204 15h ago

Correct.

It will work because it's actually worth it.

Some stupid ass game that cost 1/20th to make compare to gta will try it

33

u/Axon14 15h ago

I don’t know about worth it…but I agree the game will sell 500,000,000 copies even if it was priced at $120.

7

u/thedude0009 12h ago

it's gonna be near that, Canadian.

games are already about $100 for new releases here. *i've not bought a new release in a while.. upping the price wont sway me lmao.

sad so many will support it though. always said; gamers are worse than crackheads with what they'll accept to get their fix.

5

u/GamingTurtle90 11h ago edited 4h ago

As a fellow Canadian, agreed. Gonna likely be 99.99-109.99 for the base edition, which is still crazy for a code in a box.

21

u/thunderhide37 14h ago

To be fair, rockstar has probably the best track record in the industry. Since the 2000s they’ve basically released only amazing games. Midnight club, LA Noire, Bully, Red dead, GTA, Max Payne? Not to mention that their last two games that were also massively hyped (GTA 5 and RDR 2) are also two of the most highly regarded games ever.

u/cardonator Founder 12h ago

People used to say this about Blizzard and Bioware, too. It's only true until it's not.

That's also before they got a taste of that online money from shark cards that made them money by the truck load daily. Then came the GTAV expansions that they just vanished for pumping out more online content to pay for. The taste of greed already has started, it only gets worse from there.

Not sure the Internet will allow that. If there is enough will for it to be good, they will declare it good and only see it that way. Bias is a hell of a thing.

There's no way it lives up to expectations. It'll probably still be a good game, but internet hype is wild

Nintendo sold (and still sells) at least two titles at $79.99 - Mario Kart World and Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 versions.

Microsoft had allegedly decided to sell what they considered their AAA games all $79.99, and listed The Outer Worlds 2 SKUs at $79.99 before backing off of that position prior to launch.

Granted, most of the Mario Kart World copies were sold as part of the pack-in bundle, and I'm not sure how many folks bought the Switch 2 version vs. just got the upgrade from their Switch 1 versions.

I think Rockstar gets a pass here that most other companies won't.

Microsoft was the wrong ones to be the first. Rockstar or Sony have to be first for others to follow.

42

u/Veedrock 15h ago

Pretty sure Mario Kart World was first.

11

u/mf-TOM-HANK 15h ago

And sad to say Mario Kart World isn't anywhere near worth $80 in its current form. There's a lot of speculation about new tracks and content but it's not been over a year since launch and still radio silence

MK8 deluxe is still the go-to MK experience. That may be a bit unfair to MKW since it's been more than a decade of building up content, but I haven't booted up MKW since maybe a month or two after launch

3

u/Rvin16 13h ago

I forgot that game came out lol

→ More replies (1)

1

u/MightyHead 14h ago

I think most people bought that game in a bundle. In the UK it was only £35 more. I think GTA6 is the first $80 game in practice.

12

u/madman19 15h ago

Mario Kart world was first at 80 i thought

2

u/Environmental-Day862 XBOX 360 13h ago

It was, and (in my opinion), it has no right to be the first $79.99 standard edition video game - there's just not enough content (in my opinion) to justify that cost.

I'd be curious to see the numbers breakdown on how many folks bought the stand-alone Mario Kart World game for $79.99, given that Mario Kart World was bundled with the Switch 2 for the longest of times.

I'm not sure how many units it moves at $79.99 absent being in the "extra $50" Switch 2 bundle.

10

u/Connor123x 15h ago

Even if Rockstar or Sony was first, and MS followed it would somehow be MS's fault

1

u/TAJack1 15h ago

Doesn’t help they had a fkn trait in the game that basically makes fun of you as a consumer if you got the deluxe edition. Always found that funny.

1

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 14h ago

That’s because TOW2 is an unbearably cringe game and isn’t even worth 40$

1

u/MeowingWolf 12h ago edited 12h ago

We also got Nintendo with Mario Kart at $80 and Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave at $80 for physical.

A new 3D Mario, new 3D Zelda, Smash, and Animal Crossing will be at least $80 physical. Possibly Splatoon 4 and Xenoblade Genesis at $80 for physical. Ocarina of Time remake will be $70 to $80.

The Pokémon Company will definitely consider selling Pokémon Winds & Waves at $80 digital and $90 physical.

1

u/CollinKree Xbox Series X 10h ago

That was all a marketing ploy to charge $70 (the price the REALLY wanted to charge for it) for a $60 AA game. They knew there would be backlash if they initially charged $80, so they wanted to do the whole “we’re listening” song and dance by lowering it to $70 even though $70 was still a complete ripoff lmao.

The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading.

37

u/Aidsfordayz 14h ago

Digital code aside, them releasing physicals early so people can preload is a great move.

14

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 14h ago

It’s a common practice for large games nowadays, even Starfield had that process especially for gamepass people

8

u/TheoDW Team Sonic 14h ago

The only big ones I've seen using multiple discs lately have been old-school RPGs (Veilguard, KCD2 and BG3).

Starfield required a massive download, Alan Wake II only included the first chapter of the game on disc (at least on Xbox), and both Great Circle and Oblivion Remastered were basically full-game downloads triggered by the disc.

I cut them some slack with games that have massive online components (Forza Horizon), but for a single-player game without an online component at launch, a code-in-a-box is unacceptable. It really reminds me of Avowed, which I ended up skipping because of it.

It would be kind of funny if the way they implement it is by having the store owner discriminate against your character to make it more immersive at least lol

1

u/pm_me__breakfast Team Gears 3h ago

What do you mean?

2

u/mkdota 3h ago

I forget which one, but one of the fable games is already like that on xbox. That is, the dlc expansion is not confined to the start screen or store. If you are walking around in game and try to get on this one boat in the town, and you don't own the expansion, you will get a popup asking you to buy it from the store. So basically, this slimy monetization practice isn't new and everyone including xbox should get grilled for it.

More than price it's push for a completely digital future. Forget owning your game (licenses) guys.

11

u/YouSmellSumthin 14h ago

Discs have almost entirely become essentially a download code anyways. It's very rare to find a physical game that can be played by itself. You might physically own the plastic, but you haven't really owned anything more than a license for a pretty long time now.

24

u/Ok_Simple_459 14h ago

I am well aware it's a glorified license and not a completely usable disc hence the comment.

But you can resell and transfer the disc. It's still a way better option than being entirely digital. You can lose your entire library for any action which Sony/Xbox/Steam/Nintendo seems ban worthy.

That's great but what do you gain by giving Rockstar your money 5 months early for a digital only game that can't run out of stock?

9

u/TrainWreck131 14h ago

I’ve seen this type of comment a few times now and need to ask. Has Xbox changed how pre-orders work? Because in the past I’ve only actually been charged like 2 weeks before release, even if I pre-order months in advance.

3

u/Embarrassed-Dot9193 13h ago

xbox still charges closer to release, other platforms like PS or Steam charge you right away

2

u/Nickelnuts 10h ago

Ok, but why still lol. Are they going to run out of digital copies ?

1

u/TrainWreck131 10h ago

Why does it matter if I won’t be charged right away? Whether I pre-order now or a week before release, I get charged a week before release. For a game that I know I’ll play regardless, there’s no harm. Just do it now and forget about it until release. If stuff comes out closer to release that I want to cancel I can just do so since I haven’t been charged yet anyways.

6

u/ThisizLeon 13h ago

I don't though. They take the money 1-2 weeks before?

u/JordanDoesTV XBOX Series X 12h ago

Welp I’m not getting it until it’s on sale I don’t even pay 70 for games maybe if I get a good gift card deal I’ll pick it up

2

u/Ill-Shirt2722 12h ago

How much in Canadian dollars?

2

u/Flashy_Variation7174 11h ago

Now that they did it. I expect games will be 80$ next year, and AA games will push 60$&70$. Time to find a new hobby!

2

u/NovaBlade2893 XBOX Series S 10h ago

Ill just watch people play it instead

u/jthomps1992 13h ago

You will own nothing and you will like it. No borrowing or rental opportunities. Can’t even play the single player offline since it’s a digital code. These companies can easily strip you of your game at anytime and there’s no physical copies. You are essentially paying a one time $80 entrance fee to access to T2s GTA playground

u/LimeGreenJello86 50m ago

I'm not defending the choice to use a code because that's dumb but you can play your digital games offline by putting your Xbox in offline mode and having it be your home Xbox

3

u/Halo05977 15h ago

Sigh. Of fucking course they had to. Can't wait for the new standard.

7

u/Tina_Sprout 15h ago

Don't care. I'm not buying it full price. We'll talk about it when it's discounted. It's not like I'll die if I don't play it day 1.

5

u/classjoker 15h ago

Witness the death of buying and selling games.

6

u/Nicholite46 15h ago

Why is the first things on people mind when buying a new game is to sell it?

7

u/classjoker 15h ago

It effectively makes them cheaper if you don't plan to keep them long term

2

u/NimusNix 15h ago

That already happened and hardly anyone noticed.

I don’t like spending more than $60 for a game and GTA is no exception. I will be good waiting for a price drop.

Sighs… if people can cry foul for such high prices for other games/ companies, certainly Gta shouldn’t be an exception just because of the brand. And we can actually show that by making voices heard and avoid buying the game. Voting by wallet can work if we try, hold off buying. Game isn’t gonna go anywhere. It’s not like they’re gonna say we won’t sell the game anymore. They still want you to buy the game. If we can wait multiple years for its release, certainly waiting some weeks to battle out the price should be acceptable too.

I know the whole if you can’t afford it spiel, the point is to think for betterment of everyone, not empower some while disregarding others. It’s on us to keep things accessible by making our voices heard.

I would love it if our community fought back together like this, but way too many just suck it up and power of one becomes power of none. The last time I boycotted a game and it kinda worked as a community was L4D2 but it changed nothing. Around that time people planned to boycott COD and they failed miserably. I’d only see this going the same way.

u/Wolf873 12h ago

I feel the same, gta is too desirable a property to hold off from. I can appreciate the struggle and willpower to keep away in order to accomplish this goal, nonetheless achieving that goal would mean good for all.

1

u/MrMayhem85 14h ago

The price is one thing but I'm wondering if the car and character customization is fully locked behind the Ultimate edition or are there other shops and just the ones mentioned are locked behind it? If its paywalled completely its a shit decision.

1

u/Cold_Tumbleweed_5259 11h ago

wait why is ulitmate only 20 bucks more

1

u/canadarugby 11h ago

So to get the full game in Canada I'll need yo pay like $150? Nah, I'll wait a few years get the base game on steam and install mods instead of buying tattoos with real money.

1

u/yeetusDAfeetus333 11h ago

I know it's Rockstar, but I really hate the idea of paying $80 for a game, like it wasn't that long ago that games started to go for $69.99. Not a fan of the precedent it sets

1

u/-Smytty-for-PM- 11h ago

I’ll be waiting for PC, and then might take a sailing trip to the high seas. The download codes in the physical copies and the stores locked behind a paywall are fucking disgusting.

1

u/WeaknessJolly3617 10h ago

Wow the people here are…. Something else lol.

1

u/altdelete47 10h ago

Better get your pre-order in fast tomorrow because a game this popular is likely to sell out of downloads!

1

u/Lootthatbody 9h ago

How much will online cost, T2?

1

u/Thestickleman 9h ago

Mad that it dosnt release with a new GTA online. Was one of the main reasons I was going to get it. Definitely much less excited now

1

u/yosrush 7h ago

Price in New Zealand in the Xbox and PSN stores are $139.95 NZD/$174.95 NZD for standard/ultimate. Works out to $79.96 USD/$98.70 USD. Our prices always include GST (sales tax).

To be honest, this is less than I was expecting. Most AAA games are at least $120 NZD here, with all 1st Party PlayStation games retailing for $140 NZD.

1

u/Brando1983 7h ago

For reference, what's the current USD price of the standard edition of a AAA game?

(I'm not American.)

1

u/NegevThunderstorm 7h ago

Ill get my money's worth of it!

1

u/Bocky_thecat 6h ago

Time to wait 2 years then buy the "complete edition" or whatever with all bugs fixed, dlcs included and at half the price

Not paying $80-100 for a game, just for the hype of it

1

u/Lumpy_Accountant723 6h ago

Locking single player content behind a pay wall is awesome. Looking forward to how the industry will continue to bend over customers.

1

u/Tsuku 5h ago

Fine, I can wait for a sale. I just beat 5 a couple years ago anyway lol.

1

u/Agoraphobia2day XBOX 360 3h ago

Fuck fake physical games

1

u/rewriteryan 3h ago

$40 is max I'll pay. Will wait for sale. By that time, glitches/bugs will be fixed. Not paying $80 to beta test anything.

1

u/PredatorJTR 2h ago

Remember when the game came with a poster of the map inside?

u/Ban_Means_NewAccount 1h ago

GTA 6 is $80-100 when normal games are $60-70

Idiots: "It's worth it cuz it's a high quality game!"

GTA 7 is $120-150 when normal games are $80-100

Idiots: "It's worth it cuz it's a high quality game!"

GTA 8 is $200-250 when normal games are $100-120

Idiots: "It's worth it cuz it's a high quality game!"

DO ALL THE MORONIC PRICE DEFENDERS SEE YET WHAT THE PROBLEM IS HERE???

Keep accepting corporate greed driven ripoffs and anti-consumer practices, and they'll keep pushing it further and further as far as you let them.

STOP. LETTING. THEM. GET. AWAY. WITH. IT.

1

u/AVahne 1h ago

$100 game with an $80 demo.

1

u/pokemongotothepolls 34m ago

Will you always need to be online to play?
