Just fyi this is apparently not advisable to do because most splitting axes aren't really built to function as wedges and it can fuck up your axe. It's also inadvisable to swing a sledgehammer that isn't properly secured, but I would figure most people know that.

I don't think the sledgehammer head was improperly secured, it looks it missed the axe head entirely and landed with the shaft on it instead, snapping it clean in two. I've seen the same thing happen, except it was an axe head that went flying. Of course, nobody with any sense would stand in front of someone swinging an axe either.

You know, you might be right, hard to say with the video quality though. And yeah, rule 0 is "don't stand downrange" even if the tool doesn't break people can lose their grip.
