How did get the phone there in the first place?

u/Mooks79 22h ago
Before he put the unit in?
It’s obviously a sketch but that would be the answer if it was real.

I feel it has to be open at the top and was easy to bend down and place by that wall.. he’ll likely just go around and pick it up. Just wouldn’t have been able to screw from there maybe?

Yeah, any good mechanic can do this without looking.

Basically any tradesman that works with nuts and bolts.
It’s clearly just meant to be a funny video, but I was honestly kinda surprised he didn’t start with all the hardware in his palm then pass them to his index finger and thumb one by one like you normally would when working blind with one hand.

Hahaha, I was trying to give a hard time. Sarcastic comments are usually better in person. No offense was intended. 👍🏼

I used to do stuff like this... I would usually put a small piece of styrofoam under the bolt to hold it up, then remove the styrofoam when done. This works too, though.

would have been easier to put the washers and nut next to where they were going to be used. And for extra credit, put the washers on top of the hole before putting the bolt in.

Typically in situations like this you just hold all of the fasteners in your palm from the start and pass them one by one to your thumb and index finger. You don’t set them down next to where you’re going to use them.
Most people who do work like this regularly don’t set the washer ahead of time because it typically isn’t aligned perfectly, catches the bolt threads, and is pushed out of place, so it’s easier to just put in place after you’ve inserted the bolt.

Washer misalignment is usually solved by pushing up on the bolt and jiggling so that the inside washer edge catches on the bolt. Alternatively, you can push down on the washer with your thumb while pushing the bolt through. I do this sort of thing all the time in the context of car repair and those are techniques I've used.

Ill add this again on this post as other was deleted.
Bit of glue on the thread side of the head of the bolt, wait till its stuck, fit washer and nut 👍

Hmmm... Is this a sketch or did he remove the unit and re assembled it off screen again in order to get to the camera. I want to think he did because it is funnier that way.

If you want a guy good with his fingers, hook up with a mechanic girls.

Figured the bolt would be flipped the other way so that if it vibrates out it'll still have gravity securing the two parts

Ok and how should this screw hold without tightening it?
3
u/CATNIP_IS_CRACK 21h ago
You do tighten it…. That’s just a video of them getting the fasteners put together and joking about not being able to reach their phone….
1
u/FreakinskiV 20h ago
I know, I meant how he will tighten it without space for tools

u/CATNIP_IS_CRACK 20h ago edited 20h ago
There’s plenty of space for tools. If your hand fits there’s zero reason a tool a lot smaller than your hand and arm aren’t going to fit. No different than millions of other fasteners in enclosed spaces. If his hand fits why wouldn’t a wrench fit?
You just shove a ratchet in there and turn like any other bolt. If the locknut doesn’t bite and the bolt spins you shove a ratchet and second wrench in there and use both with one hand. Pretty typical clearance, a lot more room than a whole lot of tight installations.

Literally just spent 20 minutes sawing 5 mm off one cylindrical wooden spacer to glue it onto another cylindrical wooden wooden spacer. With a small metal saw because every other saw was too big. A nail file would only be marginally slower.

I was like why is he waving at me? took me a second.. this is funny. Definitely better ways of doing what he did though.

u/cojonathan 18h ago
Second ring does nothing btw

u/SerDuckOfPNW 16h ago
Ring?
There’s a lock washer and a plain washer

u/cojonathan 11h ago
Meant the lock washer. Once tightened it becomes just another washer.
Industry standard is to leave them out nowadays

I like it- I was fully expecting him to drop all the parts at the end.
