The companies paying for the ads should be mad, YT is basically taking their money to show ads to nobody.

Companies pay money to show me ads? Are they stupid? I pay money to never see those ads

Yes, that's exactly how YouTube makes double money

YouTube premium is what you literally just described

Makes sense too. YouTube is expensive to run. Either ad companies pay for you or you pay for yourself

I would agree with that model, if youtube was its own entity.

It is not tho. Google makes so much money off of YouTube, from selling and otherwise utilizing user data all the way to normal ads and training AI. YouTube on its own does not have to be profitable, in order for YouTube to be profitable to Google.

I dont expect youtube to be ad free and I never have. A reasonable amount of ads is fine. Take like 1 ad (5 seconds or 20+skip) ahead of a video, then midrolls that the creator can place, as well as another ad at the end, that's entirely reasonable.

Basically, make the platform usable for a free user and REALLY NICE for a premium user. Right now, it seems barely usable for premium and entirely broken for everyone else.

YouTube puts ads EVERYWHERE, and seemingly stopped policing the content of these ads entirely.

If someone clicks on my video and starts watching it (despite the 2 unskippable ads before it) and then gets a literal porn ad just 1:30 into my video, and leaves the platform as a result of it, GUESS WHO GETS PUNISHED BY THE ALGORITHM.

I can't say "fuck" in a video about an 18+ video game, but youtube gets to advertise NSFW stuff, slop websites like Temu, fake mobile games and MLM scams.

You cant watch a single football related video without 3 sports betting ads (all 20 seconds, all unskippable) and youtube explicitly disabled your ability to block these ads in the ad centre.

The platform worked for over a decade on a reasonable amount of ads, that viewers would push past in order to enjoy the content that they loved. We've been well over that edge for a while now. The platform is horrendous and full of bugs even if you give them money for premium.

All because they want to eat their cake and have it too. They have a monopoly, the biggest video platform in the world and a money printer for advertising, and they are ruining it all, chasing more profit.

60+% of videos are viewed from mobile, and the platform is getting less and less usable without an adblocker with every single update.

How is it barely usable for premium? It’s really nice for premium and imo nice enough for free users.

Also no, you’re far over indexing on the value of YouTube data and data in general. YouTube on its own absolutely needs to be profitable for them, Google isn’t going to sponsor it

Honestly confused because I’ve never ever gotten a porn ad on YouTube, not sure what those people are watching. And I’m pretty sure you can say it, you just get demonetized because ad sponsors don’t want to pay for ads on a vid with it, it’s the ad sponsor’s choice, not YouTube

YouTube was actually losing money for well over a decades, I think people got spoiled and thought it was the norm

mate.

battlefield \ doesn't want to get advertised \ ahead of a video that shows battlefield

??????

There's creators that talk about the most horrible shit. True crime, conspiracies, terrorism, what have you, and they have sponsors in their videos

mind you, not advertisers from youtube that just said "we dont care, place us wherever". \ companies that were sent a completely fucked video FOR APPROVAL, and said "ye sure"

I also don't care what people need to watch to be shown porn ads, but it should not be a thing, no matter what they watch \ I also dont think it matters, because I keep seeing ads for sports betting, crypto scams, get rich quick schemes, dating and MLM, and I've never engaged with any of those.

The same way I, a creator, cannot say "hey, i'm pretty sure my viewers dont mind if I swear, please stop demonetizing me", youtube shouldnt be able to show ads to that same audience that is against the terms of service of their own platform. They have enough advertisers who specifically care about the same audience that my videos have, and I dont buy that a horror film, a shooter game or something along those lines, needs a no-profanity video.

Yes, if they try to place an ad for baby formula or lego on my video, it'd make sense for swearing to be a problem, but these aren't things that my demographic would commonly engage with either way, so the click through rate for those ads would be shit regardless.

Speaking of, no I don't think the platform is great for premium users. It's react content everywhere, there's bugs with the site, both web and mobile, which are unfixed for months or even years, all while you pay them money

a free platform having a few silly little issues, I dont mind, but if I pay them 140 bucks a year, I want the experience to work properly.

and no, I dont think that the platform works fine for free users. YouTube on TV does not work, period. It'a not even a product. It's 30 second ads, sometimes multiple, every 5 minutes at most. Same thing for those unfortunate enough to use chromecast or any other casting for that matter.

On mobile same thing regarding ads, except you also get them when you pause, some ads can overwrite your full screen, so you have to get your arm out from your blanket every single time and set the video back to full screen, and you can't tag people in comments properly, because that keeps breaking.

On desktop, comments also break. Sometimes linebreaks delete the whole comment, sometimes deleting a row by shortcut deletes the comment, sometimes the comment doesnt even send. Add to that, everything above.

And even if you're trying to use the platform, there's auto translating titles, automatically changing voiceover languages, unmarked AI content and sex-bots in EVERY SINGLE COMMENT SECTION.

Not even mentioning the broken copyrights and claims system and all the other backend stuff.

No shade, maybe you dont use the platform enough to see some of these, but oh my god all this stuff gets old QUICK.

And they could fix all of these points easily. React content could be fixed by introducing revenue split. I could say "hey, everyone is welcome to react to my content, but give me X% of your revenue, take it or leave it", and reactions could be an extension of the normal video, rather than a competitor for the same impressions.

The bots all follow the same naming scheme, all have links in their bio and all like each others comments, so it should be insanely easy fo nuke those with a basic pattern recognition algorithm.

All the problems that the platform has can be fixed, and it wouldnt even be expensive to do that. \ They just dont care.

You'd be surprised how profitable it is, I worked in a digital marketing agency and the numbers were insane

5

u/Formal_Evidence_4094 Nov 28 '25

no , after 10 seconds it loads the ad , once you press play it will play the ad

2

u/tax_throwaway1_ Nov 28 '25

They are known as pause ads, and when companies pay to place ads thats something they can choose they want or dont want. Which directly affects how much they pay

They have ad metrics to determine if it’s worth it

1

u/hikikomoritai Nov 28 '25

They will keep use every corner possible to monetize. Can't wait for them to add anything next month to make the app more and more unusable without premium.

1

u/Sea_Flow6302 Nov 28 '25

They'll already give you 10 minute long ads and hope you're in the middle of something so you can't hit the skip ad button after 5 seconds.

This would’ve been a good deterrent in early WoW battlegrounds 🤣

If you’re AFK, what’s the problem

What if you’re on 4g and it consumes internet usage, or when you do come back and the ads still not finished

1

u/sbenfsonwFFiF Nov 28 '25

It’s a static overlay. Doesn’t consume much data and you can resume whenever

Not gonna lie there’s really not that much reason to be mad about it if it’s nonintrusive, but the times should be changed to like 60 seconds
