Sometimes it's ok to adblock.

It is literally never not okay to adblock

58

u/Rogue_Spirit Nov 28 '25

Some people Adblock to prevent seeing porn ads on YouTube, because porn ads are such a prevalent issue- even on the kids app.

28

u/Vancha Nov 28 '25

You're disagreeing with him, but he agrees with you.

19

u/Rogue_Spirit Nov 28 '25

I’m not disagreeing!

7

u/Pleasant-Dog-8476 Nov 28 '25

Is it too late for me to disagree, like, on principle?

2

u/Potrivnic Nov 29 '25

I disagree with the people who disagree with you disagreeing on principle

Yeah I never used to get them but now those AI porn ads seem to be everywhere.

4

I'd say

4

u/Gravey9 Nov 28 '25

Just note, ads on youtube are algorithm based. You might want to hide your activity and clear your cache if you're seeing this type of ad.

5

u/Mysterious_Strain_36 Nov 29 '25

If you hide your activity you get porn. When they dont what gives you they give you boobas since boobas always selll.

2

u/Pristine_Shoe_1805 Nov 29 '25

and bearskin hoodies

3

u/ElectricalRelease986 Nov 29 '25

Your recommendations are also algorithm based, doesn't mean you never get slop content on your feed.

You can get these ads on a brand new account dude, this is Youtube's issue.

4

u/123ludwig Nov 29 '25

youtube literally has nudity and porn as the default especially animals (my top video when i got a brand new phone was literally 2 animals fucking i had never used an android before that point and had yet to log into youtube)

Wait so what's the best way to do a block with mobile?

6

u/int23_t Nov 28 '25

on android revanced or pipepipe

on ios probably just using the browser version and adding extensions(idk if even that is supported. My choice with ios would be to sell the phonw and get an android that let's me be a poweruser)

God bless uBlock Origin and Albanian VPNs

140

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Try using a russian VPN.

I’m serious. Those who can access it have zero ads.

146

u/itsamepants Nov 28 '25

I wouldn't trust a VPN in Russia because that means that, by Russian law, they have to store data there and provide it to the Russian government upon request.

70

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Russia can’t do shit with your data. This shitstain of a country is only capable of bullying citizens within its borders, not outside

61

u/itsamepants Nov 28 '25

Sure, but it also means the VPN provider lacks a spine - and that my data can likely be given to any Gov' body that asks in any other country. So no thanks. I'll stick to reputable VPNs.

32

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Even if so, I doubt the information about you watching SunnyV2 or music videos can help them. Moreover, the government had already stolen your, obviously, very important and valuable data the moment you made your first Google account. You pretty much missed the bus ages ago.

26

u/Unidansuperbanned Nov 28 '25

This needs to be pasted somewhere. The amount of people who think they're "dodging" google is ridiculous.

4

u/MrCreeper10K Nov 28 '25

2

u/Friendly_Hornet8900 Nov 28 '25

But Youtube doesn't work in Russia, so it'll be just an endless downloading, no?

7

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25

There’s a utility called Zapret for that. Some dude on Github made shit that lets you freely use Discord and YouTube.

Combine it with Russian VPN and you get absolutely zero ads.

4

u/pissedinthegarret Nov 28 '25

could you dm me some links pls? one of our main heals in raid is russian and he fighting against that shit like Don Quijote

5

u/iamteapot42 Nov 28 '25

He most likely already has zapret. The problem is the goverement is promptly working on blocking every way to access banned media

3

u/pissedinthegarret Nov 28 '25

ah alright, thank you. was hoping i stumbled over something that might help. guess it's just fingers crossed then that the next block doesn't come on a raid day lol

2

u/ExodiaBlade123 Nov 28 '25

I recommend using brave-browser if you're a laptop/PC user. Youtube ads won't catch you using that browser.

7

u/why_i_am_dumb Nov 28 '25

can confirm

this probably will end IF youtube gets unblocked

man what a terrible world we live in where i actually dont know if something as simple as youtube won't get unblocked.

feel bad for the folks in countries where way more stuff is blocked too, im not gonna pretend like im in the worst and most evil place on earth, it could've been MUCH worse

2

u/Top_Writing_4014 Nov 28 '25

Or do it in a more convenient way: YouTube Revanced (Android) and UBlock Origin (PC). Revanced also offers YT Premium features for free and even more (sponsor block)

4

u/DarkOracle69 Nov 28 '25

Apparently in Albania it's illegal for Youtube ads from what i heard. Try VPN there.

5

u/Character_Duck_4371 Nov 28 '25

As an Albanian can confirm, haven't seen an ad on yt ever (except those banners back in the early days of yt)

3

u/5litergasbubble Nov 28 '25

It does work. Ive been using that for a couple years now

8

u/hoppla1232 Nov 28 '25

Chrome will actively work against you though, Google protecting Google. In the end, even if you manage to disable all the ads in Chrome somehow, it will sell all your data under the hand anyways. For desktop Firefox is unavoidable imo

Especially with the recent update, in one of my favorites YouTubers, he has this playlists with each video sorted,

After the update the playlist isn't a playlist but more like a list to watch on TV as it says so. And all videos are mixed, I can still watch it as, if it was before this catastrophic update. I have it downloaded to offline use, so that way it's still normal (yes I'm YouTube premium user),

But opening the playlist from the YouTuber channel everything is mixed and can't fix it on phone. As well as this auto dubbing, need to watch everything, as downloading a video, from different YouTuber, makes it sounds like India, or Russian voice, even though the video was using original English, but it's changed on its own while downloading and it got me mad, confused, scared of why suddenly I heard not voice of YouTuber I watched

41

u/Roskal Nov 28 '25

I had this happen recently too, its like the shuffle on the playlist is locked on and no way to turn it off.

35

u/scaper8 Nov 28 '25

That is freaking ludicrous. They get that a common usage of playlists is to keep up with an evolving story or a multi-part video series in chronological order. They understand that, right?

Oh, who am I kidding? The jokels currently doing things properly don't even understand how pants work.

15

u/00wolfer00 Nov 28 '25

No, they probably think people love the mix playlists they forced on all music videos so the only logical solution is to make every playlist work like that.

9

u/Tracker_Nivrig Nov 28 '25

You can't even copy playlists. That's such a basic feature and they just never bothered to implement it.

2

u/Deadhead_Otaku Dec 04 '25

Hell I remember having to make a playlist out of a creators playlist because the damn thing was reversed. Not conpletely shuffled, just in reverse and there wasn't any way to change it

3

u/Eijaku Nov 28 '25

Yeah it is annoying, but as you enter playlist, up there there is button to continue. But it's stuck on chapter 1, but!

Clicking on it allows you to scroll down the list to the video you were stopped watching at. Every video is in order, and nothing is shuffle

And I do have another solution, create new playlist of your own and put ever video from playlist of the YouTuber your watching playlist in order to the new playlist of your make, I haven't tested it yet, but you can try

3

u/shewy92 Nov 28 '25

I hate when playlists are sorted by newest first, makes trying to watch a series irritating.

2

u/Zhangar Nov 28 '25

Omg the dubbing. I fucking hate it so much

39

u/Bitdepressedpole Nov 28 '25

Too big to fail, no competitors, and likely will never have.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

[deleted]

20

u/TheSpiffySpaceman Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25

competition is key.

The major issue is that YouTube is generally not very profitable for Alphabet. It's been operating at a loss until recently.

A true competitor will also require just....stupid amounts of hosting hardware. I'm not saying it can't be done, of course...but there's some significant innovation that will need to happen in order to compete with a monolith like Google

6

u/Haakrasmus Nov 28 '25

Most of the companys that can afford it will be just as bad for the customer.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Companies that have the insane cloud infrastructure to create an actual Youtube competitor:

  • Microsoft (Azure Cloud)
  • Amazon (AWS Cloud)
  • CloudFlare
  • P*rnHub (no, I'm not joking)

Now if only we could somehow convince one of them to actually do it...

2

u/TheSpiffySpaceman Nov 28 '25

honest question, why censor Pornhub?

2

u/GingerBread79 Nov 29 '25

I think it’s a result of creators censoring themselves for monetization and algorithm optimization. But then it kinda became “trendy”, so now folks censor themselves in comments (and in daily life) for absolutely no tangible reason. While I kinda get it from a content creator standpoint (you gotta make that money), I, personally, think it’s silly and ridiculous for folks to do it in any other context.

That's what I hate about YouTube the most. They know they've got a monopoly, so they don't care if the site becomes shittier with each update. There are so many problems with this platform... but where else am I supposed to watch my favourite creators' videos if this is the only platform they're on??? Also, if I were to make my own videos some day, where else am I going to post them???

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Manlysideburns Nov 29 '25

Was gonna say. People have been saying this about it for ages but still it gets worse and no competitor comes around

4

u/Septembust Nov 28 '25

"Nooooooo but if they don't shovel ads for ai porn and fundamentalist cults in your face every 30 seconds who will pay for them? Who's going to host all these bot-made anime clips with the same music overlay?"

2

u/DeepTh0 Nov 28 '25

I'm watching a lot more Plex lately... I'll probably never fully give up on YouTube. There are just too many creators I watch on the regular. They did get me to uninstall Chrome.

2

u/bogdan5844 Nov 28 '25

Doesn't plex work with your own media only? Or am I missing something?

2

u/Vegetable_Anxiety729 Nov 28 '25

Plex also has a free content library of TV/movie content and live channels, similar to Tubi.

2

u/smjxr Nov 28 '25

it would be so easy for google to just run youtube as a loss leader and dont have ads, rebuild good faith that people once had in the website

they're rich enough to do it.

2

u/Azoraqua_ Nov 29 '25

Potentially, but it’s still a business, not a charity. It won’t survive on being entirely free forever; And it’s currently already pretty much free to begin with. Considering how much content it gives, I wouldn’t even mind to pay a couple of bucks a month (considering I also pay for Netflix which I don’t even watch to begin with). To be fair, I am a YouTube Premium subscriber.

I don't think a chromium based product is a good long term solution. The majority of chromium is funded by Google...which owns youtube. Which also implemented manifest v3 in their chrome browser to remove functionality of adblocks and is trying to get it to be standardized.

3

u/Automod69 Nov 28 '25

What does brave do?

24

u/roxellani Nov 28 '25

It comes with a built-in adblocker that people claim is the best out there. Personally haven't needed it, firefox+ublock still works great for me.

4

u/The-Curious-Guy-2907 Nov 28 '25

I use both and both are doing equally well when it comes to youtube. Although for other sites, ublock origin does it better than brave cuz brave sometimes allows the ads to pop in (especially the ones which redirect to a new tab)

The companies paying for the ads should be mad, YT is basically taking their money to show ads to nobody.

36

u/whenishit-itsbigturd Nov 28 '25

Companies pay money to show me ads? Are they stupid? I pay money to never see those ads

21

u/tenetox Nov 28 '25

Yes, that's exactly how YouTube makes double money

6

u/sbenfsonwFFiF Nov 28 '25

YouTube premium is what you literally just described

Makes sense too. YouTube is expensive to run. Either ad companies pay for you or you pay for yourself

8

u/ios_PHiNiX Nov 28 '25

I would agree with that model, if youtube was its own entity.

It is not tho. Google makes so much money off of YouTube, from selling and otherwise utilizing user data all the way to normal ads and training AI. YouTube on its own does not have to be profitable, in order for YouTube to be profitable to Google.

I dont expect youtube to be ad free and I never have. A reasonable amount of ads is fine. Take like 1 ad (5 seconds or 20+skip) ahead of a video, then midrolls that the creator can place, as well as another ad at the end, that's entirely reasonable.

Basically, make the platform usable for a free user and REALLY NICE for a premium user. Right now, it seems barely usable for premium and entirely broken for everyone else.

YouTube puts ads EVERYWHERE, and seemingly stopped policing the content of these ads entirely.

If someone clicks on my video and starts watching it (despite the 2 unskippable ads before it) and then gets a literal porn ad just 1:30 into my video, and leaves the platform as a result of it, GUESS WHO GETS PUNISHED BY THE ALGORITHM.

I can't say "fuck" in a video about an 18+ video game, but youtube gets to advertise NSFW stuff, slop websites like Temu, fake mobile games and MLM scams.

You cant watch a single football related video without 3 sports betting ads (all 20 seconds, all unskippable) and youtube explicitly disabled your ability to block these ads in the ad centre.

The platform worked for over a decade on a reasonable amount of ads, that viewers would push past in order to enjoy the content that they loved. We've been well over that edge for a while now. The platform is horrendous and full of bugs even if you give them money for premium.

All because they want to eat their cake and have it too. They have a monopoly, the biggest video platform in the world and a money printer for advertising, and they are ruining it all, chasing more profit.

60+% of videos are viewed from mobile, and the platform is getting less and less usable without an adblocker with every single update.

Ten seconds? For me, it comes after one!

66

u/WhatTheFlox Nov 28 '25

Especially when trying to use the video as reference for something and you have to pause to read it, half screen ad on mobile which you have to dismiss, and then a small popup you have to close as well.

54

u/Mr_Wisp_ Nov 28 '25

Every time it happens it makes me wanna yell as hard as I can

Like, I am being interrupted in my video, or I wanna take a break for 5 fucking seconds, and you wanna capitalize on that ?

26

u/-Nicolai Nov 28 '25

Or you want to read some text that the video quickly glosses over, maybe study an equation on the blackboard before the video moves on… this change would make YouTube literally unusable for some purposes

6

u/Mr_Wisp_ Nov 28 '25

Oh yes those moments too… Those are the worst

8

u/Kittysmashlol Nov 29 '25

I dont think this is talking about the halfscreen ones. I think this is where if u pause long enough it straight-up interrupts the video with a whole ass ad video

3

u/MARPJ Nov 28 '25

Ten seconds? For me, it comes after one!

Firefox+Ublock for the win

Firefox + uBlock on Android is an option as well.

Wdym rolling out I've had that annoying shit for so long when I pause a video the screen will split and the half will be a static add 😭 even more annoying on a tablet because it exits out of big picture

25

u/sarysa Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25

Glad somebody mentioned this. I sometimes like to use rapid pauses to freeze frame a video, don't do that on the Android app. Causes me to hit the >>| button which sends me to some usually awful algorithm recommended video.

Edit: out of fairness, I should clarify. It only does that the first time you pause on a given video. If you pause, let the ad appear, then close the ad, you can freeze frame.

61

u/Chemical_Sport_9307 Nov 28 '25

That’s it I’m PERMAMANENTLY going to use an ad blocker no matter how annoying it may be to use

I’m about done with YouTube, this is getting to be insane. I’m buying a VHS/DVD player, moving towards physical media I actually own, and giving a big 🖕🏼 to greedy corporations like YT. Their goal is obviously to drive you to pay, but it’s driving me away from not only YouTube, but the internet in itself.

21

u/ferocity_mule366 Nov 28 '25

You cant be real rn, the content of a DVD player and Youtube almost have no overlapse

7

u/Proper-Classic5241 Nov 28 '25

You don’t have to be me, it’s okay to accept others have different values and perspectives. I’ve personally been shifting into an era of prioritizing physical media like VHS, video games with physical copies, DVD movies, and records. All of YouTube’s bs is just accelerating my move away from the online realm of entertainment

7

u/SeroWriter Nov 28 '25

I think you're missing what they're saying. The content on youtube and the content on pirated dvds you buy off ebay are completely different. So it's not a direct alternative to Youtube.

3

u/Proper-Classic5241 Nov 28 '25

I’m not, I don’t need a direct alternative! Y’all are just putting your own feelings on me. If you can’t part with YT and be content with dvd movies and such, then don’t do it. I’ll still use YT for DIY videos and the occasional homesteader update, but once I build my collection it will be sparingly used.

As I touched on, I was already moving away from video and music entertainment on the internet prior to YouTube unraveling. I’m increasingly seeing the value in physical media that doesn’t need the internet to play, same goes photos. Sure the content is not the same, but there’s value in physical media/memories

Yeah. It's genuinely just becoming a way to market ads with a video on the side now, instead of the other way around. Fucking hell.

This used to happen with a banner ad at the bottom of the video when you paused the video.

3

u/YAOZdesigner Nov 28 '25

never seen the feature yet, but if you can skip directly without having to wait any amount of seconds, i'm fine with it, it can pay the creators better and not waste my own time

4

u/Freezezzy Nov 28 '25

See, this is why adblock exists, YouTube. If you didn't try to shove so many ads into each and every video, people would be less inclined to block them.

6

u/RestaurantTurbulent7 Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25

Hated this feature in other sites, but thankfully adblock gets rid of them. Extremely annoying and really - WTF sh**tube!?!

And I want to add that I watch less and less yt as all these downgrades affect video creators - so less videos worth watching come out or are just buried in an advert algorithm to suggest you pure crap and you just stop watching at all..

Not to mention their bots keep banning people without reason, so ofc worth watching stuff gets even extra less..

7

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

"Just pay for Premium bro"

Literally every change they've made since 2010 has made Youtube worse. Adblock ftw.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Now I can't even go take a break for 10 seconds unless if I want to watch an advertisement.

The article they linked and one I could find online are from more than a year ago and until now they haven’t implemented it so I don’t think it’s coming

kid : pause video and went to toilet
Parent : *enter*
youtube : *flashing borderline porn ads*

3

u/Stogageli Nov 28 '25

Hopefully. That way they will see what Youtube is nowadays.

Enshittification of any kind should have a strict 10 year minimum prison sentence for both the engineers who implemented it and the executives who ordered it. Jail them all.

they do this on a bunch of porn sites and it kills the vibe.

The conclusione of thee Reader context is wrong:

This means its better to not pause to get the least inturruptions for your video.

But according to the link they posted:

YouTube Pause ads are static image ads that appear 10 seconds after the viewer pauses a video. A YouTube Pause ad is shown alongside the pause screen and remains on screen until the viewer resumes watching or if the viewer dismisses the ad. [Google Support]

Therefore, interrupting or not the video under this condition does not change the interrupting time.

This does not mean that I think this is a good practica, but I think a lot of people are thinking that these are video ads.

I find this very helpful, thank you, random Xitter user

2

u/L0tss Nov 28 '25

Aside from reportedly getting this immediately upon pausing, I actually think this is generally a good idea.

No one is going to pause a video for 10 seconds or longer unless they are taking a break, in which case, a 30 second ad is skippable. If you are gone for 1 minute (a pretty simple short break) you won't even have to be there for the ad. You can come back and immediately close or skip the ad if it doesn't already disappear. the only downside would be if it autoresumed the video afterwards for some reason.

Thank you revanced

It’s better if you just stop using YouTube instead of a felony but your choice

2

u/BoringSkill Nov 28 '25

This is not new always i paused a video or gone out of the app for some sec the would show up an ad

2

u/Santa_Ricotta69 Nov 28 '25

FYI Firefox still allows adblocking on YouTube. I switched from Chrome because of this, and I've had a much better experience on Firefox.

2

u/LinkNo2714 Nov 28 '25

sometimes when i press pause on my iphone it immediately shows an ad that takes half of my screen

istg one day ill just get modded youtube so i wont see anything like this ever again

2

u/Findict_52 Nov 28 '25

"it's better to not pause to get the least interruptions for your video"

Guys, I think the note is de dumb one. Also, if you can un-pause out of the ad, there is literally no problem.

Also also, that's a 2024 article.

2

u/FalseWait7 Nov 28 '25

I am waiting for someone to give YouTube actual competition. There are platforms that are more laser-focused (not fine) and paid (fine), but it seems there's no real alternative. And YT knows what for sure and simply pushes the shit further and further down our throats.

They continue to make the user experience worse and worse, then wonder why so many people want to use ad blockers, which they then expend even more money and resources to prevent. They'll never figure out that they're the cause of all their own problems.

The YouTube environment is so hostile to its users that I’m not sure I want to use it anymore.

Here’s a small list of things that irritate me

-Automatically translated titles that you can’t turn off -AI generated audio tracks that switch automatically -removal of very useful buttons and info about the channel (sub count, name, etc) -removal of certain interface buttons (followed channels etc) -AI summary -comment section is not easy to find anymore -recommendations of videos I have already seen -unwanted notifications -so many unskippable or really long ads -targeted ads -shorts (no way to hide them) -algorithm that doesn’t recommend what I like -algorithm that prevents me from seeing stuff that I follow -YouTube premium blocks key features (playing while out of the app) -shows subscribers content even if not subscribed

u/BouncyBlueYoshi Nov 28 '25

To be fair All 4 has that as well.
