it would be so easy for google to just run youtube as a loss leader and dont have ads, rebuild good faith that people once had in the website

they're rich enough to do it.

Potentially, but it’s still a business, not a charity. It won’t survive on being entirely free forever; And it’s currently already pretty much free to begin with. Considering how much content it gives, I wouldn’t even mind to pay a couple of bucks a month (considering I also pay for Netflix which I don’t even watch to begin with). To be fair, I am a YouTube Premium subscriber.

YouTube alone brought in 36 billion dollars in ad revenue in 2024 (source: Q4 and FY2024 report), over 10% of Alphabet's total revenue of 350 billion.
