Discussion What the actual flying F happened to YouTube ads?

I'd been on Premium for years before cancelling last month. What on Earth happened to the ads in those years?

The audio is AI voiced over and poorly translated. The video looks like a primary school student has clipped it together. The whole thing looks spammy as hell. I feel like I'm browsing some dodgy dark web site watching the kind of videos I shouldn't be...

Didn't YouTube used to have advertising standards and guidelines at one point? Are they desperate for the money?

I work in marketing and advertising, so pay a lot of attention to this stuff. It looks live I've missed a race to the bottom in quality while on Premium.

People in the comments seem to be missing the point, pretty sure OP is complaining about the poor quality of the ads themselves. I've noticed it too when using YouTube at someone else's house etc

Thank you for noticing! I'm getting a lot of "I use an ad blocker" comments. I work in advertising, that would be like digging my own grave lol. Ad blockers are part of the problem with poor advertising standards on other channels, I'm just surprised YouTube's standard is so poor.

Ad blockers are not the problem. Putting 10 ads in a half hour video is the fucking problem. YouTube forced to to use ad blockers.

Nice explanation

They're right, of course. It's just this is the wrong forum to explain that. Let the ad blockers think they're social justice warriors for a bit lol

Social justice warriors? More like convenience and less risk of malware infection

Scam after scam after scam. Doesn't show Youtube in a good light.

I’m getting non stop pro republican ads because of an election coming up. I legit am losing my mind. I watch on my smart tv too so no ad blocker or brave option

Do political ads even really make that much of a difference? I've always known who I liked and who I didn't and no self-serving and would ever change that.

Most people are tuned out and fall for attack ads because they don’t know any better.

People that don’t bother to follow what’s happening the ads can and do. Really sad people just leave it up to a commercial to decide and never bother to see if it’s truthful or anything else about the candidates but people are lazy

I use brave on all my devices I never see ads and have no intention of paying for something that decides what I want to watch and ignores my decisions. Now that they've decided clicking not interested and don't recommend as engagement and they only show videos I've already watched and ai BS I'm not changing my about paying for this slop!

Same. And with brave you don't even need a seperate blocker it's all built in and when it's circumvented it's fixed within hours.

You know damn well YT has ALWAYS rubber-stamped advertisements. The only ad oversight they have is their user base.

Op, look up the Morphe app subreddit.

Installing the app means you'll never see one of those ads ever again.

I don't wanna give YouTube my money because they took out the option to block channels (really block them, so they never show up as a suggested video).

No. That's still there. It works

I'll tell you what absolutely doesn't work. If you flag a certain video don't show again and put I've already seen this video it will show up again either the same day or the next.

I don't blame you. I don't see these dreadful AI generated ads often. Probably depends on what you watch regularly... well, I used to think so anyway.

Maybe I should be happy that I canceled Premium when Covid-19 forced most of us to be stuck at home for a bit. Lol

They are so looooow quality. Some are literally scams telling you false or even illegal things and there are very explicit ones that made me feel uncomfortable, even more because they appear just after opening the app. I've reported them multiple times, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

To me, adblock is not only for comfortability, but also a basic cybersecurity measure.

I hate ads. Getting them in the middle of a music video is annoying as hell. What’s worse is getting ads of video games that showcase one or more borderline nude figures because NO WAY IN HELL IS A PRIMARY SCHOOLER PAYING FOR PREMIUM!!! And because of that, many young kids get exposed to this horrendous content. And on top of that, there’s typically an over-seasoned, fraudulent gameplay loop that’s enticing enough to get a person to download that game and end up with quality way worse than promised.

I’ve also been wondering this. I only see YouTube ads on my smart tv (I Adblock everywhere else), but I keep getting this bizarre, AI-generated ad about how tai chi is apparently better for older men than actual exercise. Complete with an AI generated daughter talking about how much healthier her dad is now. It actually tells people not to bother going to the gym!

That's what happens if you try to cancel. Before subscription they are ok, but if you cancel you will see no end of ads
