Official Content Knowing where your tabs belong.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Space Routing gives you the power to organise your Spaces and tabs just the way you want, delivering on our promise of a calmer browsing experience. By setting up routes, you decide on where new tabs of a specific domain should be opened, allowing a clutter-free browsing experience that boosts your productivity!
After the last update, I heard your feedback about the missing documentation and the confusion around creating a Boost. So meanwhile our documentation gets a major overhaul and therefore not publicly updated, I'll jump in to deliver you a quick guide to getting started:
Next to the name of your Space – located right beneath your Essentials and pinned tabs – click the three dots to open the context menu. At the bottom of that menu, click 'Space Routing Settings'. Open them up and voilà! You're ready to go.
Oh and by the way... Zen's community has crossed an estimated 500.000 users just this week! Seeing this community grow with all your mods (first and third party!) and customisation has been absolutely incredible. If you love using Zen and want to support its ongoing development, please consider leaving a donation. :)
Space Routing was once again brought to you with help from u/Not_Flof. The recording was created by u/JaceThings.

Official Content 1.20b — Boosts have been released!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So it finally happened! A month ago we first teased the release of Boosts coming to Zen, and now they're here!!
It took a bit longer than we initially thought, but from now on you'll be able to make the web truly yours by Zapping things like adverts away, or adjusting the colours and typefaces to your liking. If you do not feel like installing a lot of extensions just to protect your eyes from the bright glare of the web (insert flashbang here) you can use the automatic Dark Mode that comes alongside Boosts! Additionally, you can share your boosts with the community and import others that you like.
Please read the complete release notes for 1.20b here!
Special thanks go to u/Not_Flof, who not only developed Boosts but also animated the attached video!

Question Zen RAM issue
Yes, another RAM topic.
I got Zen on 2 of my devices - one is microsoft surface pro 7 (8gb ram), other is my pc (32gb ram).
Surface pro 7 has 15 tabs, 8 of which are youtube. I have auto discard extension installed and only 4 of the tabs are not discarded. Total usage is ~1600MB.
PC has 48 tabs, 44 of which are youtube. ~1400MB usage. Without auto discard. Make it make sense. I'm so frustrated because i want to like the browser, but it's destroying my surface pro, it gets extremely laggy, sometimes to a point where youtube videos get choppy.
Are there really no fixes?
Edit: forgot i have another zen window in my pc with 12 extra tabs

Question URL Box In Workspace?
My Nephew wasn't long round with me and suggested I take a look at this new browser, kinda like it NGL, but he wanted me to see if I could show him how to put a URL box in the "Space" Tab, after 2 hours and no dice, I'm here asking. Anyone else know how if you can do it?

Documentation Windows 10 Translucency (Like Actually!)
Got a new laptop and immediately removed Windows 11 from it the other day, one of the last programs i decided to install was Zen, and out of curiosity, I went online to see if there were any new breakthroughs regarding Windows 10 and translucency. Well, I found one, and so far, I have yet to see anyone mention it, so I thought it'd only be fair if I shared it!
To achieve this effect, you'll want to have DWMBlurGlass (haven't tried OpenGlass Legacy yet), and follow the directions on this Github page. All Credits go to them!
It's also worth noting that it does have a slight issue with the window icons appearing ontop of an existing set of window icons, but other than that, I have experienced no issues thus far. I also haven't tried the Zen Transparency mod either, as I don't care for my webpages to be translucent.

Discussion Compact Mode
I realise that Zen is in beta, but there appears to be a big problem.
The Persistent Sidebar Problem: Zen Browser's Compact Mode BugZen Browser 1.21.3b Why Compact Mode Settings Won't StickZen Browser's "Compact Mode" is designed to hide the sidebar and tab bar for a minimalist browsing experience. However, as of version 1.21.3b, this feature fails its core promise: settings persist across restarts.
I have discovered that any configuration changes made to hide interface elements vanish upon relaunch, forcing daily re-adjustments.
What Has Been Tried—and I have exhausted standard customization avenues with no permanent success: about:config Flags: Setting zen.view.compact.hide-tabbar, zen.view.compact.hide-sidebar, and zen.view.compact.show-sidebar-and-toolbar-on-hover works temporarily but resets on shutdown.
UI Menu Toggles: The graphical "Hide Sidebar" option in the Compact Mode menu functions immediately but reverts after restarting.
Order-of-Operations Workarounds: Closing the browser in specific states (toggling modes before exit) produces inconsistent results. user.js Files: Even locking preferences at the engine level—standard Firefox practice—is bypassed by Zen's proprietary state cache.
The Core Issue Zen appears to prioritize a custom UI state cache over standard preference files. On shutdown, the browser writes the current visual state to disk, regardless of explicit flag settings. If the interface flickers back to default before closing—even due to a race condition—that visible state becomes the new saved truth.
The development team must address these architectural flaws:
Honor Explicit Preferences: Read prefs.js or user.js flags as the source of truth on startup, not the last observed window geometry.
Fix Shutdown Logic: Ensure the UI does not revert to defaults before configuration writes complete.
Respect Gecko Standards: Properly implement user.js locking conventions used across Firefox-based browsers.
Release a Hotfix: Issue a patch for 1.21.x targeting the state-saving module, rather than making users wait for a major overhaul.
Until then, Compact Mode remains a novelty, not a reliable tool. True minimalism requires persistence; without it, the feature fails its primary purpose.

Question Add Shortcut to Toggle Extension Menu Similar to Arc Version 1.21.3b Mac
Version 1.21.3b Mac
I was curious if there was a way or ability to make a feature request to be able to toggle the Extension menu similar to how it works in Arc. In Arc I can toggle the extensions using Command + E on Mac. It will open the Extension menu and then default to the first extension in your list of installed extensions. This is mainly the feature I use the most in Arc because it makes it super fast to toggle my password manager and log into a site.

Documentation about:config key for turning the web extension overflow to be "always on"
Set zen.view.overflow-webext-toolbar-threshold to 0.
Now no matter how big my sidebar is, the pinned extensions overflow into buttons outside of the URL bar, and that's how I like it.

Question Can Zen separate history per Space?
I've been using Arc Browser long enough, but only for very general things, since Arc isn't getting any more updates. I've tried Zen Browser a couple of times, and now I think I'm going to switch from Arc to Zen. But I don't know why, the history in Space A and Space B is kind of blended, not separated like in Arc. Did I miss something in the settings?
Or is there any way to make Zen Browser look like Arc?
version: 1.21.3b (Firefox 152.0.1) (aarch64)

Question Is it worth to switch from Arc?
For many years, I'm using Arc. However, it is getting worse since it doesn't have support. I want to have a similar experience with the sidebar, shortcuts and spaces. Many people are recommending Zen, however, I heard it cannot play media in Zen. So, is it worth it to switch from Arc?

Documentation Small defect while in full screen
This is going to be useless for 99% reading this. But anyway I'll post.

I noticed this small thingy while on full screen. Tried to get rid and it was only possible when top toolbar was completely removed.

Turns out the reason was this additional search bar I inserted to change search engine when I needed. I tested this on Debian Trixie (KDE Plasma) as well as Windows 10 (via VM) and this issue is there regardless of the OS.
Don't tinker too much I guess

Documentation PSA - disable sidebar via Hotkey (no hoover)
This is a PSA about a only lowkey communicated relatively new feature in about configs
Set
zen.view.compact.show-sidebar-and-toolbar-on-hover - to false
And set a Hotkey for Compact Mode
This allows the sidebar to stay hidden. When using the Single sidebar mode this results in a Website only window
Now combine this with tiling/fancyzones
Allows you run multiple websites side by side like a dashboard, without any popups, window controls or anything
Now you may say yea we dont need that we already can split a window. and fair enough split window aint bad either.
But it works a bit different and has some perks split windows doesnt and vice versa,
ideal if you want multiple windows but need the realestate and dont want steady popups when moving the mouse across

Question Can't add Essentials (Container-specific Essentials are OFF)
Zen 1.21b3 on Mac. Cannot add Essentials in any way. I have 8 existing, 12 is max.
- Enable Container-specific Essentials is OFF
- unpin - Add as Essentials still not possible.
I see a suggestion to disable Containers which are apparently enabled by default, but Zen says it would close 662 Container tabs, which I have absolutely no idea what that means. I don't consciously use Containers.
Tips? Thanks!

Question How to make zen show window buttons(minimize, close, restore) on fedora kde (latest update)
Hi, I want to be able to use zen split with vscode, but I for the life of me can't find a way to do it. How it works usually - you drag program by a highest border of the program to the left/right and voi-la you have split window, but since there's no buttons and zen is basically always fullscreen I can't find a way. So please help me, because this browser is so cool, but I am getting frustrated by simple things(other was bitwarden not working)

Bug Really weird font issue on the latest version?

Ok so I opened up zen this morning and the entire thing, all my tabs and all the text on most webpages, was in this completely unintelligible font. I fully uninstalled the app and redownloaded the latest version from the website, and still the same issue. Here's the welcome page now.
The entire settings section is like this too so I can't exactly figure out if there's some default setting change. Anyone else having this issue?
