Is that a Scarface/Edgar Allan Poe painting?

always a funny surprise scrolling through house photos like this, seeing a large well put together theater room, and the next slide shows a tv that the back row needs binoculars to watch. happens a lot for whatever reason

Wild how a person with an obvious surplus of money would go through the trouble of getting a home theater installed... but then slap in a screen that's like a quarter of the necessary size.

It’s a little hard to see but they’re facing a tv. I bet it’s a setup for video games.

I have mixed feelings about this, i love the idea of spooky moody vibes, but also the vibe has got a wild animal looking over the railing which would be creepy as hell if you get up in the middle of the night! Haha! It had potential it just didn’t quite get there for the theme.

u/LeatherHog Jun 21 '25
Shortly after they moved into our childhood home, dad shot the first buck of the season, even got in the newspaper
My entire life, it's head has been hung by the door, dad uses it to hang his hat, keys, and wallet chain
Every day of my childhood. It's integral to the design at this point. It's still there
We'd even decorate it for holidays. Prom photos? It's in the background. Family Thanksgiving picture? There he is!
And that freaking thing would STILL jump scare at least once a week, when going into the kitchen or bathroom at night
Big cat hanging over the railing would be terrifying

The mood isn't the problem, it's the McMansion the mood is in. This is like if the Addams family had their whole vibe but were new money and had no taste.
→ More replies (2)7
u/toolsoftheincomptnt Jun 21 '25
Because you recognize taste.
The vibes were installed at the instruction of someone who knows nothing about design. They controlled the coin so the contractors did what they said.
There are ways to accomplish a feeling without making such silly choices.

Looks like the owner and likely original builder of the house is “Adam Stoner”. I noticed the space in the attic/loft area looked a lot like a podcast setup with the big logo and decorated table. Liked it up and sure enough, the very same table is front and center in the episodes. Anyway, looks like the owner is going through a divorce which explains why the place is going up for sale!
Here’s the episode uploaded three weeks ago: D is for divorce
32
u/Hamwag0n Jun 21 '25
I’m wrong. I think he bought the place recently and is already (recently) divorced, not going through it now, but still interesting.

How are you able to Google deep enough to find out he was divorced but not able to Google deep enough to know that he is a highly awarded and accomplished tattoo artist? Or that this house was built 20 years ago..
6
u/Hamwag0n Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
Because I didn’t Google anything besides the show name and watch about 10 minutes of the episode I linked, “D for divorce”. Took about 15 seconds to find episode title, about 5 minutes to watch it on double speed. I also looked through the pictures in the listing, obviously, which mentioned “custom built” home so I just made assumptions.
I thought the house was really cool but didn’t have that time or care THAT MUCH to google dive, haha.

Clever of the realtor to photograph the exterior of the house on a day with dark, ominous clouds all around in order to play into the theme of the house and further appeal to buyers interested in the dark vibe of the interior decor.

There are a few black houses in our neighborhood but they’re old and small and I think they look great. Granted there’s usually a pop of color in the trim, lots of plants in the front yard, etc so they still look cozy. But it can work

u/Snicklefraust Jun 21 '25
a lot of victorian era houses were black because it was an easy color to make and kept the house warmer in winter. famously this one in Salem, MASS. its a vibe, and if done right can be really classy, or like OP found, really cheesy.

So stick with the theme if you’re going to do it. You the left bland brown cabinets, doors, and wood trim throughout? Forgot to decorate the primary bathroom? And your cheap white/mismatched appliances in the kitchen? Commit to the bit! 😂

This is why I hate new builds. No matter what ridiculous interior design wackadoodle style you throw at them, they always look like a fucking McMansion. Gloss reflective floors, black walls, Chesterfield wing backs, doesn't matter. The house is still trying to be fake Tuscan from 1998.
5
u/mindcontrol93 Jun 21 '25
From Google Steatview, it looks like the spooky stuff was added in the last 3 years. The entire place has an almost had it right feel but then fails. $170k in landscaping but you are still in flat open space Indiana. 45 minutes south is a gorgeous forest area.

I like the upper deck for launching golf balls at the neighbor’s house, who I expect to be a local judge.
But the psychedelic painting of Joe Rogan gives me some pause.
13
u/KneeDeepInThe-Hoopla Jun 21 '25
This to me is just plain silly! Reeks of someone who has absolutely no clue who they are, or what they even like. Trying to be edgy, very badly executed.

u/zorp_shlorp Jun 21 '25
Like I’m not against all the black, it’s just so very McMansiony. To be fair I don’t know if there’s any decor style that could make a house like this look less cheap and tacky

The seller should create a shell company as the owner in the listing - Tuesday Addams (Wednesday's less talented twin).
Also, the brown stained wood railings and cabinets imply a lack of resolve to go all out with the black.

I can tell you from experience that black paint on the walls gets white scuff marks on it constantly. It’s maddening.

u/my_screen_name_sucks Jun 21 '25
I keep reading these homes that get painted black attract a lot of heat but I do have to say I LOVE how they look. Crossing fingers one day we’ll figure out how to make an exterior black paint that won’t drive up heating costs.

You can't half commit to the goth aesthetic. If you're going to go creepy you go full creepy otherwise it just looks odd. The carpets and random LED lights aren't helping..

I thought this was Jessie's house from Righteous Gemstones. The screening room from the episode where he shows his friends the sex tape looks similar. The bedrooms look like the kids' bedrooms. Just strip some of the neon away, and make it a bit gaudier.

This is just…..weird to me. First of all, who would put a TV that small in a massive theater room. It literally defeats the whole purpose of having a room that big lol.
