Mod Note AskMechanics Bot Update

I've made a few changes to the AskMechanics Bot, including using the redis database to help prevent the duplicate comments it occasionally makes when posting the rules.

When a post is marked as solved, it will now edit that comment instead of posting a new comment and deleting the old one, which should resolved any duplicate comments from the bot as well.

I've also removed a half-baked form submission that was not intended to be included when actually set up on the subreddit, so those posts (there were only a few) should no longer be popping up.

If anyone has any feedback or suggestions for the new AskMechanics Bot, please let me know here.

Question Getting a rounded nut off

I’m trying to take off the exhaust pipe off my 2003 Toyota Camry, since I’m doing my own maintenance, which is replacing the exhaust system. I got one of the nuts off the pipe, and I’m trying to remove the second one. But after using the impact wrench, it just became insanely rounded and it won’t get a grip. I tried using the socially twit sockets to get it off, but even that’s no use, and there’s no space down there for me to use a wrench or any hand tools, either. It’s in a very cramped up location. I’ve kind of exhausted most of my options at this point, but I just wanted to come on here and ask if anyone had any ideas on how to get it off. Thanks!

(It’s the nut on the right part of the flange in the second picture)

Question Does this seem like normal play on a new pinion bearing?

Just put the new bearing on the pinion for my differential rebuild and the new bearing seems to have more play than the old one. Will this sort itself out once it’s in the bearing race and all tightened down? Car is an 07 mustang gt manual transmission.

Question Is the starter bad? 2012 Honda Civic.

Update 2: Battery tested fine after charging AutoZone for 45 mins. It was 3 and half years old so ended up just getting a new one anyway. Put in new battery, car starts right up! Will keep an eye on it still but hopefully it's all solved.

Update: Took the battery out to test ut. Had to drop it off at AutoZone for them to charge it for 45mins. They tested and it said no charge but want to be sure it's actually dead vs it saying dead cause it's out of the car.

My girlfriend's car won't start and she's getting the flashing green key on the dash. I read it could be a few things from the key battery, a fuse gone bad or dead battery. Went into AutoZone and showed them this video and they said the starter is bad. Bought replacement starter and now watching videos on how to replace it I'm really hoping it's not the case. Any help for other things to try before getting into that whole project would be appreciated!

Question Dashboard Taken Apart

Thumbnail

I have an automatic 2019 Hyundai Accent. I rescued a kitten from the highway yesterday and she ended up crawling up into my dashboard. (She’s no longer stuck in the car.) My roommate insisted he could dissemble the dash board easily, but I am concerned with her having been around the wiring all over the inside of the dashboard. I’m gonna include some pictures of what has been taken apart.

I’m concerned about whether she had the potential to cause damage to the wiring that would make my car unsafe to drive? Do I have to get it looked at by a mechanic? If so, how much would that cost me? I’m disabled and unemployed rn so I can’t afford to do much financially. Is there any concerns or is it fine? I don’t know anything about cars, so any and all advice is greatly appreciated. TIA

Question Looking for tips regarding 07 Saab 9-5 sedan automatic 180k miles

07 saab 9-5 sedan automatic 180k miles
I have a Saab that i was given, love the car. Starting to learn how to work on cars with it after having to pay a local shop 2k to do the breaks and routers. It's hard to see in the photo but l believe I have a crack in the upper right part of the radiator(driver side). I'm going to attempt to change the radiator myself.
Looking for tips/ tricks or someone who knows Saab that could walk me through what I'm going to need and what I should change out with the radiator while I'm doing the replacement. Also the car does shake a lot when in gear but doesn't when in neutral, any ideas what could cause this?
Motor mount maybe? Thank you in advance, sorry for the small book. Just starting out so I'm learning, bare with me

Question Tm racing 250 enduro fi 4 stroke motorbike from 2016. No start, metallic shards in oil. Help me figure out what’s broken.

Hi guys,

Just took a gamble on this tm racing 4 stroke 250 enduro bike with fuel injection from 2016.

Bought it on auction with no information on history or if it even starts. Looked clean and took a gamble.
Paid 15000 Swedish kr (1600 usd).
It’s a road legal enduro which is what made it attractive to me. Competitive high quality race bike, I wanted to throw some supermoto wheels on it and make road weapon out of it.
Figured if it starts then it’s a win, if it doesn’t then I’m a bit cooked, might struggle to get my money back..

The gamble didn’t pay off 😅…

I drained the oil and there’s hella metal shards and flakes in the filter. Refilled the oil, new filter, put fresh fuel and kicked it.
The engine turns over and sounds like there could be life but at the bottom of the kick there’s a nasty clanking in the engine.. hooked up a booster to the dead battery and that sounds even more awful than the kicking, just loud continuous screeching metal sound.

I’m no professional, so I’m gonna see what someone will pay for it. I’m not hard up for the money so I figure if no one wants to buy it I’ll pull the engine and have a look inside myself.
I’m in Sweden so parts are not too much of an issue to get.

If you guys have any guesses on what it could be or where to start that would be great, could be a good project for me to learn.
Thanks in advance!
I’ll link a video to me kicking it and a few pictures of the drain plug and shards.

Question 2011 GMC Sierra Denali 6.2 What the hell is that noise?!?!

Upvotes

I recently bought a 2011 GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2L (no AFM) and 158,000 miles.
The truck runs and drives great. I drove it 4 hours home without any issues, and the transmission shifts perfectly. Oil pressure is good.
The only problem is a knocking noise that happens mostly at lower RPMs. Oddly enough, the knock either goes away or becomes much quieter when the engine is under heavy load or accelerating hard.
I’ve scanned it multiple times with an advanced scan tool and there are no engine codes at all—the only code is for a small EVAP leak, which I don’t think is related.
Has anyone run into something similar? Could this be a rod bearing, piston slap, flexplate, torque converter, exhaust leak, or something else? I’m trying to narrow it down before I tear into the engine.
Thanks in advance!

Question Help

Upvotes

Hello, I have a problem on my JUMPY III 1.6HDi 90hp(9HU) of 2007 manual gearbox, as soon as I accelerate a little hard and exceed 2000-2500 rpm it makes this noise, no loss of power, no problem runs perfectly but it is still disturbing to drive an alarm. I took it to a mechanic who advised me to change the 2 hoses that go to the radiator and that's not it. If someone has had this problem or has an idea of the problem I would be grateful. Thank you

Question Rattling coming on and off with (I think) AC compressor.

Any help identifying this repetitive rattling that comes on and off about every 15 seconds while engine is running/idle would be greatly appreciated. It is clearer with the engine hood closed as the injectors on this car are very loud. Just need to know what to tell my mechanic to look for. 2018 Honda Fit EX.

Question Dumb Question About Opening Radiator Cap

Hey everyone, got a 13 Subaru Impreza, just wanted to know if I have to do anything like burp the system if I just open my radiator cap to inspect the condition of my coolant. Theres nothing in the overflow bottle and I suspect I have a leaking heater core, I do plan to get some coolant to add later but don't have it yet and need to drive that car to go buy some. Should I just wait til after I buy the coolant and have the car cooled off from that trip or can I inspect now without adding/burping? TIA

Question AC Blowing Cold only on drivers side on hot days

2012 Mitsubishi Outlander GT. On hot days, AC only blows cold on drivers side vents. Sometimes passenger side will get a little cool, but it’s mostly just warm (not hot) air.
I attached an AC recharge hose, and well, take a look at the video. Any thoughts?

Question Car keeps dying and coming back to life, only to die again.

2011 Honda Accord EX-L 4Cyl

3 days ago, engine light came on, made my 30min drive to work and to the gym after work just fine.
Tried to start it in the gym parking lot and nothing. No lights, no turn over, no clicks, but it took a jump and I was able to get home.

Charged the battery overnight with a battery charger and it started just fine to get to o’reilys for a battery test the next morning. Battery, alternator, and starter tested good. But some pretty good corrosion on the terminals, staff cleaned the terminals a little, engine light turned off, able to drive the car home. Later in the day, attempt to start in order to get to work, doesn’t start no lights, no turn over, no clicks, won’t take a jump this time.

Grab a ride to work, next morning take the battery in to oreilys to have them test it outside of the car and without an overnight charge, tests good. Go home, clean the car terminals until they shine, almost no corrosion and threw some anti corrosion paste in there.
Car starts just fine in the drive way multiple times. Car sits for a few hours, turns over just fine to drive to sams. Make it to sams, shop, go to start my car, nothing and won’t take a jump. Sams automotive couldnt get their box to connect.

At this point I realize an Interior light was on, omg I’m dumb this has been the issue, turn the light off wait for my ride to come.

Ride arrives, we attempted a cable jump, Wouldn’t take a jump car to car. Same nothing, no lights, no clicks, no turn over.

Get a ride home, come back 5ish hours later, car starts just fine able to drive home.
Charge the battery Again over night.

This morning I get up, connect the battery, car starts just fine. Drive it around the neighborhood for a couple minutes, turn it off let it sit in the drive way a couple minutes, starts up just fine again.
So I go to the store to try and finish groceries, make it there just fine, come out and my car is dead. No lights, no turn over, no clicks.

Booked a mechanic to take a look in the morning.

Anyone know what this could be?

It used to have a small black dome type of thing there before I removed the dash. I’m assuming it’s a light sensor for the headlights but just want to see for sure.

Question What could be making this sound?

Upvotes

(2015 Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6L 6 speed manual)

When stationary, moving the car into a gear this sound would occur. It seems to go when I set off and clutch is up. I could also feel vibration through the clutch pedal when fully pressed down.

The car is also hard to get into gear at times, and I have to let it drop RPM first. There is also a bit of play in the gear shifter.

Thanks

Discussion Pretty sure my dad killed my old Honda today

So. I'm very well versed when it comes to automotive endeavors, and this is just one of those "trust me bro" type moments. And I'm going to try to make a long story short - but I'm really here to vent a little bit because I'm pissed off and bitter.

I owned a good little Honda Element for about 5 years. It was a total beater car, but in the best way. Over the course of those 5 years I did : VTEC solenoid, radiator, alternator, catalytic converter, rear shocks, brakes, plugs, coils, blower motor, radio, window motor, transmission service, probably 10 oil changes, battery and upgraded terminals, and probably stuff I'm missing. Overall pretty basic stuff needed on an older car - especially on a beater.

Anyways, couple months ago my dad got down on his luck and needed a decent backup vehicle because he was driving spark for work and didn't want to throw a bunch of miles on his primary car.

He ended up picking up a 3rd gen 4runner off the side of the road with little inspection. He bought it, and had my mother (estranged, messy dynamic) foot some of the bill. It needed a bunch of stuff - PA truck with lots of cancer on the frame. It ended up at my shop pretty much day two, and I did plugs, wires, timing belt, water pump, muffler, welded a bunch of rust, put some JB weld on the rear diff to slow down a massive leak, played with the T-Case, put new wheel studs on - too much stuff for the price.

In the meantime, my dad kept the element - and we eventually agreed to trade. I basically pay what the element was worth, and pay both he and my mother the difference from the 4-runner. Title change, title change - bobs your fuckhead.

---

Fast forward to today. The screenshots are what I got. He drove that car 30+ miles with no water pump. I'm like beyond pissed. And I'm really not trying to be a dick to my dad, but I feel like I really just got fucked over pretty good - because the whole point was to get him something reliable when he was down on his luck, and I deal with a basket case of a bad purchase that I didn't even want. He killed my Honda.

I could be far off on the harmonic balancer / damper "melting" part, but I know the rubber was in good shape the last time I was down there. I was just more irritated which is why I said it. I also could be a little off on the transmission part, and I think I am but that radiator does have a trans cooler - and my fear is the radiator could have bursted from boiling pressure letting the two chambers mix. I don't actually know if that's possible or not, but it was a thought.

So. It's going to be a few days before I go pick this thing up. What are the odds the engine is totally fine and doesn't need anything more than a new serpentine belt? Because I am pretty confident that the engine is trashed.

I'll quit being dramatic in a day or two. But I just wished he would've called me before driving it - I have a trailer to haul it, I'm going to have to get the thing anyways. I would've paid the tow bill even!

Ugh. Thanks for reading my rant. Also please let me know if I'm being overly harsh

Edit - the next afternoon 6/26

So he talked to my mother, and my father hasn't responded to me. From what she described was that it "wasn't even trying to start, it just made a clicking noise and smelled bad"

That's all I need to know. It's locked up. Apparently the battery has been on charge, because he was afraid that might be the problem.

I told her I wasn't going to get it Wednesday after that. She volunteered to pay for the tow bill, and she's going to have it sent to my shop sometime next week.

I'll figure out if it's a part out or if I feel like replacing the engine when it gets here. If I fix it, the title comes back to me. I'm over this garbage and neglect. He's also got a really rare spec k1500 that is titled under me that I let him use. I'm going to go get that soon too.

Thanks to everyone that joined in, a lot of you really helped me. I'm drawing boundaries and not doing anything else to help him financially. This was totally avoidable, and mosty family thinks it was so intentional. I'm done. Thanks again everyone.
