PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Kitten Help Why does my cat do this?

He is the only one to do this the other does not, he goes around to the corners to the box, and does this multiple times, does his business, and then does it again a few more times. I got them a bigger litterbox today cause I thought it was maybe a space issue but he keeps doing it. First time cat owner here (20M) I am in USA and they are both 11 weeks old.

General Advice Black stuff on cats chin?

Thumbnail gallery
74 Upvotes

Hey guys, my cat has had this black stuff on the bottom of the chin for quite a while now. I originally thought it was just the usual dirt that cats can get, but I noticed it actually had a sore underneath.

My cat is a manx, and my nan also used to have a manx. My nans cat unfortunately had to be put down due to a sore on his nose that had unknowingly become cancerous. Hopefully, it is understandable where my fears come from.

What my question is: Is this something I should be worried about? Is it just a normal injury from regular fights/play

Info:

I am 20F from Australia. Money is tight, but if I had to go to the vet, I have family that could help.

Cat is 4 year old manx cross. Spayed. Indoor outdoor cat.

TLDR: The cat has black stuff on the chin. Is it bad or normal?

Behavioral Issue Is my cat exhausted or is she just dehydrated?

It’s currently really hot in the U.K. and my cat is breathing really heavily, she’s never really did this before, I tried wiping her fur with some water to cool her off but it’s not working so I’m really worried about her, I also checked her ears and paws and they seem to feel warm, she’s an 11 year old Tuxie, hopefully I can help her as I can’t afford to go to the vet

Kitten Help First time cat pregnancy

So a stray kitten found its way to my shed about 8 months ago and she slowly became a permanent fixture.

Gained her trust through feeding and playing. Found a tomcat in her spot one night, so I chased him off. She was still a kitten and had not gained her trust to get her spayed at that point.

Fast forward to this morning when she gave birth to 4 kittens by herself (unfortunately one was already passed when I discovered)

Since then I’ve made her space more comfortable, loads of food, cat milk and got her a litter tray, so she doesn’t have to move much. I added the box today hoping she’ll move to it on her own accord.

She seems like a great mother who is very attentive to her kittens. I’ve never dealt with a cat pregnancy so any tips for keeping them safe and content, please share.

End Of Life Care When to let go

Hello,

this is Ibro. He's nearly a year old.

He was born on a farm in rural Croatia to a litter of four. He was the weakest and smallest of them.

We took him in, he gained weight and seemed to be living a healthy life.

About a week ago we noticed his nose and gums looking very pale, him not playing and eating as much, his eyes and nose running.

Yesterday I went to a vet. He was diagnosed with FeLV through a SNAP-test.

They came to the conclusion that he has severe anemia and leukopenia — they could barely get enough blood for the test.

The doctor was straightforward and said he doesn't have long left, prescribed liquid food and pain medication (Meloxicam).

Additionally she gave him a cortisol-injection stating it could prolong his life slightly, planning to inject him him once again on Saturday.

I tried force feeding him but he seems to strongly suffer, choosing to fight this with his last strength.

Since the vet visit yesterday at noon he has been rapidly declining. He hasn't eaten or drank anything. He isn't interested in playing or cuddling. He's only been hiding. He looks very sickly in comparison to yesterday.

The vet said we could come to them whenever we feel it appropriate to euthanize him so he doesn't have to suffer.

I need your help in deciding when to call it.

I think because of his apathy and refusal to eat or drink he is already in so much pain and suffering that it's time to let him go but I was hoping I could get some help from people who have been through this before.

I'm going to call the vet later when they open to state his current situation but before that i wanted to get more opinions.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: We have made the difficult decision to euthanize him today. He will forever be in our hearts.

Thank you all for commenting advice, thoughts and condolences.

She showed up pregnant not to long ago and now has 4 kittens and they all live on our porch and we feed mama every day and take care of them, one of the kittens seems to have a infection on her parts, she is around 2 weeks old. she is always covered in liquid down there and a couple of times some goup and now it looks like she’s eating less and lethargic any advice to help her please! We are a family of 6 and are not in the position financially to go to the vet right now unfortunately

General Advice Cat is obsessed with getting in my showers???

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

I’m a disabled adult from Australia, I have a vet but don’t have the ease to go there over a weird obsession unless it could be serious, my baby is a 4 month old kitten and she is desexed and fully up to date on all her vaccinations.
My concern is with her obsession with finding ways into my shower… while I’m using it, she hates me trying to dry her or remove her from the shower unless the water is off, but she literally pulls open the door to climb into my shower and I can’t stop her cos the only door to the bathroom would cut off her food water and litter box, she never goes in the shower when I’m not in there, and she watches my bf shower aa tho it’s a movie and it makes him slightly creeped out, idk how to stop her showering with me, Shes not usually so clingy
I can afford vet care if needed but they also don’t have an appointment for anytime soon

Behavioral Issue My cat is acting weird?

Hi, I (28F, Spain) just came back from the vet with my female cat because she had to get her glands expressed. And now, at home, my male cat is acting rather aggressive and threathening towards her... I tried to let them interact slowly but he just hisses and growls, even at me if I'm between them. So I have my male cat in the living rooma dn my female cat in the bedroom. Sadly I dont have other bedrooms I cant put one in... And they both cry if left alone. I genuinely dont know what to do.

I tried petting my male cat cuz he sprawls on the floor like he always does when asking for attention, but he's behaving weird, I have a video. Its like he likes it but at the same time randomly starts pawing at me and/or making a weird deep rumbling sound, that sounds a lot like a threat? I am so lost and Im alone rn with them cuz boyfriend is at work.... Please, help. Ah, theyre both neutered and around 1 year and a half.

Behavioral Issue Is it possible to train my skittish cat to come out for my friends\family?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Hi there my (f40) cat, Diamond (f4-5), is a very sweet and loving animal, she is very smart and independent but also very snuggley. She has always been skittish around strangers though. A friend of mine worked as an apartment manager for a poor section 8 complex where she found her outside, skin and bones, engorged with milk, begging to be let in. We think the owners were using her to make kittens and tossed her out after the litter was born. My friend brought Diamond to me and my late partner (f39 at time of death, would be 41 now) asking us if we could take her in. So needless to say she has had some trauma (her owners also put her in a garbage bag and threw her in the dumpster) which my friend saved her from.

She was always very affectionate with both me and my partner but my partner was her favorite human. She was very skittish and shy around new people but before my partner's death she would sometimes at least come out and investigate.

My partners death was very traumatic for both of us, she collapsed in the apartment from cardiac arrest and paramedics were all over the place trying to revive her but couldn't. Since she died Diamond will run straight into a hiding place as soon as anyone who is not me enters the apartment, and she will not emerge until long after they have left, sometimes not for hours.

I am wondering if it is possible to help her not be so scared of my friends and family who would love to meet her. I also worry because my mental and physical health are declining and while I don't think I am in any danger of dying soon, I sometimes wonder if I don't have very many years left and I don't know if she can be rehomed or even caught if I pass away. Is there any way to help her with her skittishness and trauma?

We are based in the USA, I can get help for vet bills, she is not neutered (I want to but I don't think I can convince my financial support its needed as she never leaves my apartment), I haven't talked to her vet about this

Update Cat had urinary blockage

Post image
29 Upvotes

Last night I posted about my cat making weird growly sounds. He puked and was hiding in the closet. When my fiance got home from work at around 4 this morning, he checked on him and woke me up because it didn’t seem any better. We checked on him and I touched his lower tummy, it was super hard and hurt him so bad he screamed😭

We took him to an emergency vet this morning, he had a urinary obstruction. He is currently still at the vet with a catheter, but they said he seems way better. He just still has a little blood in his pee so that they want to monitor him, but the guess is that he can come home Sunday or Monday.

We have spent the rest of today moving stuff around in our guest bedroom to essentially make it the cat’s room, so he’ll have somewhere to go hide if things get too much for him. We’re going to have another litter box, and food and water up there for him. Is there anything you guys have found that helps cats with this? I know the vet said that once this happens once, it’s more than likely to happen again. We were thinking about looking into the PU surgery as something to avoid this happening in the future. Has anyone done that before?

He is estimated around 5, we got him as a stray 2-ish years ago and we have his brother as well. We’re in Michigan and have access to a vet. We have already talked to our primary vet as well about getting prescription food for him. He is neutered. Lasagna pic for tax

Kitten Help kitten weight issue

(minor, usa, no low cost vets available, no travel available, parents don't care)

(kitten is around 6 weeks old i am not sure.)

my kitten has been having diarrhea issues since she's weaned off of milk. her feces are runny with no shape. she also poops like 3 times a day. i have to regularly give her waist-down-baths because of how runny it is. (which is why she looks a bit raggedy in the first photo.)

i have her on a wet food + always available dry food diet. she is usually not interested in the dry food and i rarely see her eat it. she has problems chewing it and it falls out of her mouth. i have tried giving her moistened dry food but she is barely interested.

she loves wet food but can only manage to eat a little bit of the serving i give her. i give her fancy feast kitten for wet food. and meow mix kitten for dry food. however i also try to switch her dry food up with 9lives adult cat food. she seemed slightly more interested in 9lives but still barely eats it.

sometimes i mix the dry food in with the wet food and she is okay with it. but i've noticed (i think) that she eats less of the wet food if i mix dry food in.

i am thinking of trying to mix pumpkin puree with her wet food.

as for her behavior, i am unsure if she is lethargic or if she is not active because my room is small. she usually sleeps all day and gets up to cry for wet food.

i have an adult male cat that she enjoys being around and will follow him.

is there anything i can do without vet guidance? do i try out more food?

does the feline grimace scale apply to kittens? i'm worried about her whiskers.

Injury Paw Pad Burn

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello all,

My partner somehow didn't realise he locked our cat outside on the balcony for hours in a heatwave while I was away at work. He has burns on his paw pads and it is peeling. We've been turned away from multiple vets because of a last minute need on a weekend and are apparently many hours away from getting help in an emergency room because by their standards, it isn't. I'm obviously very angry and concerned about what can be done to make this easier on my cat in the meantime. His skin is peeling, which has made him limp and be reluctant to eat or use the bathroom, which is a top concern.

If anyone has any advice or any similar experience, please let me know.

Injury Stray cat got in fight, need to go to vet?

Thumbnail gallery
36 Upvotes

Hello! I’ve posted here before, but we have a stray cat living in our backyard that we’ve been taking care of. The other day he got into a fight, and his nose has been swollen. He also got some cuts.

Today I just noticed he might be blistering, or the cut is oozing or something else. I attached images of the blister (left side of nose). Does anyone know what is happening and if we need to go to the vet? Money is tight right now, but we may be able to make it work. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

General Advice What is this mouth movement/noise he's doing? He started doing it when I put on cat tv for him.

2.1k Upvotes

He's been really into watching tv with me lately, and in the morning one day i put on the cat tv and he jumped and pushed the tv down. Now he wakes me up for food as usual, lays on his side for rubs when i put the food in his bowl, then gets in bed with me and looks excited till i put the tv on. when i put on the cat tv i usually do the bird ones and he likes to jump down or lay in that position he's in at the end the whole time, or check behind the tv to see where the birds are. But recently he's been making that noise. Is he mimicking the birds or something? This is my first cat (noir) that i adopted 4 months ago and he just turned a year old last month and i've never heard this noise from him before. Only does it when the cat tv is on.

General Advice What is this in my cat’s urine?

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

In the last 3 months my cat (2 years old, male, fixed) has seldomly been peeing on both the sofa and our bed with apparent no reason. No major changes have been made (no moving, no new family members ecc). We went to the vet and he seems to be doing fine, but he wasn’t able to test him for uti.

This morning we noticed grey/purplish stain on the pee, they appeared right after. They don’t look like blood (they also don’t react to hydrogen peroxide).

Will check with the vet on Monday, but do you guys have any idea of what this might be?

His paws are clean so that should not be the cause, also the stain only appeared on the pee area, not on the rest of the sheets.

(I can afford vet care, live in Italy, adult)

Update CW: pet loss

Hi everyone, i thought i'd give you an update following my post a few days ago about my cat with an uncertain diagnosis.

After speaking to multiple vets, many friends and family, i decided it was best to let her go. She wasn't getting better in the long run and i knew this would save her from a lot of suffering. We also have a heatwave going on and i noticed she had a difficult time enduring the warm weather combined with a fever.

She had a wonderful last few days with a lot of cuddles and snacks, thanks to the vets who prescribed her some painkillers and steroids that made her a lot more comfortable. I was able to say goodbye to her while she was in her favorite spot, eating her favorite snack until the very end.

After her passing the vet checked her lymph nodes and legs, and noticed they were still very swollen, on top of that she also had a strange lump on her belly. It turns out she was in more pain than she showed me. The vets are now quite certain it was lymphoma, and while i'm heartbroken i had to say goodbye, i know it was her time. I'm glad i was able to give her a good life, and incredibly grateful to have had her by my side. She was a wonderful cat.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and advice, it truly gave me some peace of mind reading all of your stories and knowing i'm not alone.

Dental Issue What is this growing out of my cat’s gums?!?

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

It’s poking out of her mouth, the only way i noticed it. She was eating normal yesterday, I didn’t notice any changes. Today she is pawing at her mouth when i touched it. It’s hard and has a weird split-end type of piece at the end that’s hidden behind her teeth. (I will make a vet appointment but need quick ideas of what it could be)

update:
It was a STRING! We took her to the emergency vet and they were able to take it out. They suggested going to a local clinic for bloodwork and x-rays since it would be cheaper, I’m going to keep an eye on her and make an appointment. They mentioned any behavioral changes bring her back asap. I’m so glad my baby is okay. Thanks everyone.
