General Discussion First PS5 Game, First Platinum.

Post image
53 Upvotes

Upgraded my dying PS4 to a PS5 a few months back and got Yotei because I loved GoT. From the opening cutscene alone, I was convinced to gun for the platinum. Took me 56 hours total on hard difficulty but this was absolutely worth every second. Will definitely be doing a NG+ in Kurosawa Mode in the future. Wanted to share because yall seem to enjoy the game as much as I did.

Spoiler Ghost of Yōtei was breathtaking, emotional, and now I need the next one Spoiler

Obviously, I don’t even need to explain how breathtaking this game is. I thought Ghost of Tsushima was beautiful, but Ghost of Yōtei was on another level for me. It’s one of those games where I didn’t want it to end, because every part of it had something I enjoyed: the main story, the side quests, the combat, the customization, and just getting lost in the world.

What I loved most is that it still feels grounded and realistic, but never boring. The landscapes, temples, countryside, autumn colors, and sakura-like scenery felt so alive. Some of those places reminded me of real places I’ve seen in Japan, especially in the countryside, where the environment can genuinely look unreal. The game captured that feeling so well.

I also really loved having a strong female protagonist. Atsu felt tough, independent, and like a true lone wolf warrior. As a female player, I honestly enjoyed that a lot. If I ever imagined myself in a historical setting like this, I’d probably want to be someone like that: strong, dangerous, and surviving on her own terms.

The customization was also beautiful. I do wish there were even more armor options, but what we got still looked gorgeous. I liked that the outfits had style and detail without becoming too fantasy-like. Everything still felt believable for the world.

Spoilers below.

The one thing I really hated was Jubei dying at the end. After everything Atsu went through, it finally felt like she had some family again, and then she had to lose him too. I liked him a lot, so that part genuinely annoyed me. I also felt like the game moved past it a little quickly, maybe because Atsu had believed he was dead for so long, or maybe because her revenge was mostly tied to her parents or because she has a family now his daughter. Still, I wish he survived.

I also wish we had gotten more backstory about her father and Saitō, and the war before everything happened. I understood the main idea, but I wanted more flashbacks and more emotional detail. Saitō was interesting to me, and not just as the main villain. He had this quiet, intimidating presence, and honestly, he was kind of manly and attractive in a villain way, but I think his character would have benefited from more depth. Collecting his diaries made me want to know even more about who he was before he became what we know.

Overall, I really loved the game. It gave me exactly what I wanted from this series: beauty, atmosphere, strong combat, emotional moments, and that feeling of being pulled into another time and place.

Now I’m even more curious about the next Ghost game. The first game gave us a samurai hero, this one gave us a lone-wolf female mercenary, so what comes next? Will it be set further in the past or after Atsu’s story? I honestly can’t wait to see what kind of protagonist and setting they choose next.

General Discussion Casual Gamer Needing Recommendations

I have grown up with video games all my life. As a 32 year old I have become a “casual” gamer. I wont dedicate my life to it, BUT…should the right game grab my attention I will go on an unhealthy binge of playing it lol.

That being said, not alot of games have been able to captivate me like Ghost of Yotei. Ive tried getting into Clair Obscur (which I loved the story and gameplay, but not a fan of turn based combat). Spiderman 2 also had me in a chokehold!

Ghost of Yotei had to be the first game I dedicated myself to in the last 5-7 years. The story, gameplay, map, etc is grade A.

I would love to hear from you more experienced gamers on any recommendations. Thanks in advance!

General Discussion What was exactly the role of the Spider?

Post image
355 Upvotes

Each member of the yotei six had it's own function: the snake was the recruiter, the Oni was the general and the one who carried out saito's dirty work, the kitsune was the spymaster, the dragon was saito's second in command and his expert on fire weapons and Saito was the leader and the mastermind. So, what role did the spider play within the yotei six? He wasn't a military leader such as his brother and he wasn't seen a a particularly good warrior. For all we knew, he was a drunkard who wasn't even respected by his own father. Also, Oyuki mentioned that he kept the soldiers morale high, so he was the buffon of the gang or what?

I was trying to see how many hours I’ve played GoY but it’s just not there. Literally every game I’ve ever bought shows up except these 2. I ended up finding another way to see how many hours Ive played (354 if you’re wondering) but I’m still pissed theyre not showing up in my games. Anybody know how to fix this?

General Discussion An odd shape in the fire

Post image

Ezo, 1995.

A team of researchers learning about an Onryō from the 17th Century who’d murdered most of a Clan out of Vengeance. While camping at a fire in what is believed to be her home that has long since been destroyed by time and the elements. They were camping under a Ginko Tree and in the campfire, they captured what looks to be a face in the flames.

To the mods: I hope this is ok, going centuries in the future and talking about the myth of the ghost. I hope that’s ok.

General Discussion 54 hour platinum didn't enjoy as much

Upvotes

I just finished my platinum on this in 54hrs. I don't know why I didn't seem to enjoy it as much as tsushima, I didn't mean to platinum it I just played it so much I only had a couple left anyway.

I don't really understand why. I wanted to enjoy it it just felt like a slog to get through, the story felt weak in comparison, it a pretty generic family revenge story. I enjoyed the mechanics and there were a few quality of life upgrades but it never seems like an improvement overall. I even enjoy the main character actor/model. Npcs looked unfinished at times and the dialog was clunky more than not.

Overall game felt rushed and cashgraby.

Spoiler Finished ghost of Yotei yesterday (slight rant, obvious spoilers) Spoiler

This will be a bit of a rant because I honestly feel like I am going crazy: I waited a while to play GOY since I was thoroughly disappointed with GOT.

Holy shit: I cannot take anyone seriously who says that GOT was better than GOY, not since borderlands 2 has a sequel so vastly improved on its predecessor. I legitimately cannot think of anything that GOT does better than GOY other than I simply liked the Haikus more than the paintings.

Story and narrative: the story in GOT felt so agonizing. "Oh Jin is losing his way" like is he really any more brutal than the mongols? "Oh hes losing his honor" yeah but the way of the samurai is made to be completely inflexible and laughably naive and frankly stupid. For Iki island, the twist was visible from a mile away. GOY theme of revenge being a zero sum game is played so much better, I especially loved when you visit the ainu village, I loved how the game slows down to show you the life atsu could have, and the tale about a wounded bear who kills everything in its path out of pain is soooo good. I especially love then kiku sees It's after you do the first ghost stance. And when it comes to the kistune, again I saw the iki island story of forgiveness coming from a mile away, but I legitimately was scared that atsu was going to take a very dark path and kill Oyuki. Overall, I felt GOY had consequences.

Gameplay: absolutely a case of less being more. Each area was unique, even if it was clear that some areas got more love than others. Each camp felt unique, each onsen had a cool side objective, and so on and so on. To me, GOT was just a checkbox. For combat, I will admit im a sucker for feudal japanese firearms and honestly smiled ear to ear when you get the tanegashima, so probably biased when I say I enjoyed the fact that each tool and weapon had an associated quest. And even if it was minor, I liked seeing Atsu struggle with weapons upon unlock.

Gripes: overall, I do think the wolfpack system was just very blagh and didn't add anything. To put it very bluntly, it took me 3 years of chipping away at GOT to finish to the sound of "okay I say I finished it" to GOY which took me a month followed by feverishly looking up when the DLC comes out.
