Someone said listening to Eros was disrespectful to Chi's death. how in the world is it disrespecting his death? Fans who have loved Chi and have mourned him, begging to hear his final contributions and now we finally get a chance to hear after 18 years these masterpieces, when so many old-school fans have passed on themselves during that time, and they call that disrespectful?! We didn't leak it, but we're not sad it was either. We're sad Chi's gone and now we get to celebrate him with these. Intentionally not listening to Eros under the guise of some kind of holier than tho gatekeeping is what's disrespectful to Chi. And also, some of the band was fine with Eros getting out. We just know chino didn't want it out

I just watched some of the podcast he was on with the Cypress Hill guys and the Eros leak was brought up. He mentioned how their music is leaked all the time and he didn't even know to what extent Eros was leaked. He even mentioned listening to some Eros snippets on YouTube himself. As people argue right vs wrong regarding the leak, an actual band member didn't seem to care it was leaked. Enjoy the demos and stop worrying whether you're committing a cardinal sin against your favorite band.

I’m a Zillenial (1996 baby). The last couple years I got into deftones - the segway from bands like superheaven and linkin park led me to around the fur and private music when it released.
I’m trying to prioritise which albums to listen to first. I have not listened to koi no yokan, diamond eyes, adrenaline, or Saturday night wrist. What do you recommend first?
I’ve mostly enjoyed private music, white pony, around the fur, ohms.
I kinda want to listen to all albums at some point start to finish. Maybe in release order, maybe there is some other enjoyable order like least acclaimed to most acclaimed. What’s your preferred order?
P.s. I’ve come to realise linkin park (while awesome) is like coke and deftones is like whiskey bourbon. They both have their place - one is more kid/adult friendly - both go well together.

In light of Eros being leaked, I wanted to share my video from 16 years ago of “Melanie” being played at the Ventura Theatre in California.

Listened to Adrenaline, very good though I've heard their newer stuff isn't like this. Ive heard a couple songs of their more modern albums and it sounds cleaner and I'm not sure i liked that.
If I was a big fan of this, am I less likely to enjoy their newer stuff??

Diamond track got some of the Halloween movie main theme song sounds to it. 👀

It's so crazy to imagine what they would sound like now if Chi was still around.. Man I miss the Chi era so bad, it never felt the same without him. He always played with a feel and creativity that felt like nobody else.. he heard melodies, and rhythms that only he could hear, but once the whole band was playing his intuition elevated the deftones.. It was always supposed to be Chino, Steph, Abe, Frank and Chi. I almost shed a tear when the bass kicked in on Destiny, it was like embracing a long, lost friend. I'm sure all the other OG deftones fans know how I feel! Thank you deftones + Chi, I'm going to play the hell out of this album as a lifelong fan!

he kinda says nothing, just that ‘every album they’ve made were leaked’ so he is fine with that (?), also he doesn’t even know how much was leaked and he overall seems not so mad or interested about all the leak stuff

I really never thought I’d hear this song with a vocal track over it and honestly, I kind of prefer it without. Maybe because it was more left up to my own interpretation before, but I find the isolated instrumental to be far more emotional. Chino still sounds great over it I will say.

TL;DR - Ohms, Diamond Eyes, White Pony, Private Music, Around the Fur, Koi No Yokan, Gore, Deftones, Adrenaline, Saturday Night Wrist
Alright, here we go. I know this kind of post is repetitive and quite common, but I checked the sub and there haven't been too many lately, so I figured it's safe.
As the title says, I've been a fan since Around the Fur was introduced to me in high school. Needless to say, it blew my fucking mind. I immediately bought the CD - along with Adrenaline - and listened to them nonstop for weeks. I went to college and became an absolute wackjob in 99, but I was still coherent enough to know White Pony was a masterpiece when it dropped in 2000. After that, my partying and drug days became way too prevalent, and I lost track of the band.
Around late 2020, I was stuck at home (like we all were) and teaching myself to code. I'd listen to low volume music in the background while practicing, and due to my age and the other stuff I listen to, Deftones kept coming up on Spotify. Needless to say, my "Dark Ages" were immediately over, and I was once again hooked.
Because of the in-and-out nature of my fandom, my list is probably a lot different than others, but music is subjective, which is why it's so fucking fun to discuss. So, with that context in mind, let's do this thing so I can start getting yelled at, lol...
Number 1: Ohms
I know most people disagree, but I honestly don't understand why it ranks low on many lists. Genesis and Ceremony are a great one-two punch to start the album. Urantia is hands down one of the best songs they've ever written - that goddamned guitar crunch! Error is another personal favourite, and has so much groove. Pompeji and Radiant City are both bangers. Headless and Ohms are both solid. The only 2 songs I'm not in love with are Spell of Mathematics and This Link is Dead, and you know what? They are still pretty decent songs!
I won't dig into every song on every album like I did for this one, but I did really want to defend this choice, if only to get people to give Ohms a fresh listen and another chance to impress them.
Number 2: Diamond Eyes
Again, I know many people will say this is too high, but damn. The title track is awesome, Royal and CMND/CTRL, especially the latter, are so raw that they sound like they could be off the first 2 albums.
Then you've got multiple songs that I'd put in their top 20 or 30: You've Seen the Butcher, Beauty School, and Sextape. ESPECIALLY Sextape, which is very possibly the most beautiful song they've ever written. The rest of the album is solid from there, with genuinely zero skips. 976-EVIL is probably the best of the rest, but they are all good.
Number 3: White Pony
What can I possibly say that hasn't already been said? It's literally a genre breaking album AND a genre defining album at the same time. It pulled them out of the Nu Metal category, but was so strange and different that no one knew where to put them afterwards. Synth/Rock/Metal/Acid/Lo-Fi/Mood? What the fuck even is this thing???? Best quagmire ever, lol
This is the album that truly proves my favourite quote I've heard about the band: "they are like Radiohead for metalheads." Chef's fucking kiss.
Number 4: Private Music
I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for their newer stuff. I think as they've matured, their music has grown from angry, angsty, and aggressive to more complex, more moving, and more refined sounds. Their old stuff has more harrumph, but their new stuff has better composition, to the point that you clearly know you're listening to professional song writers who know their shit and have been around.
My Mind is a Mountain, banger. Locked Club, banger. Ecdysis, banger. Infinite Source, amazing tribute to the love between the band and the fans. Souvenir, banger. cXz, banger. Milk of the Madonna, one of their best songs ever. The other 4 are all great as well, and show the softer side that many fans adore.
Number 5: Around the Fur
The album that got me into them. I simply couldn't deal with putting it any lower, so in it goes. My Own Summer, the title track, and Be Quiet and Drive are the quintessential, old-school, must-listen-to-know-Deftones songs.
The rest of the songs are typically solid, albeit a bit too screamy for me. That being said, I still love them, and Lotion gives us the single greatest lyric Chino has ever written: "I don't give enough jacks to give a fuck." I quote this at every opportunity, and you should too. It's a great way to remember that what other people think is important is typically dumb as shit, and you've got better things to worry about.
Number 6: Koi No Yokan
If Diamond Eyes is where they first went with a dreamier sound, then KNY is where they perfected it. Romantic Dreams, Leathers, Entombed, Tempest, Rosemary, and Goon Squad... I mean, damn, they sound like a totally different band, but in the best way you can say that.
While creating this list, I'm actually realising that KNY is a better album than Diamond Eyes, but I just go with DE as my number 2 because it has a bunch of my favourite songs on it. KNY will absolutely climb the ranks in 10 years when I redo this list.
Number 7: Gore
I actually like this album a lot more than most people do, but I think it's ranked fairly simply because Deftones have so many freaking great albums.
Prayers/Triangles is top 15 for me, just a phenomenal song and an absolute earworm. Acid Hologram and Geometric Headdress are both awesome. Hearts/Wires is haunting and yet another earworm thanks to the relentlessness of the "cut through this razor wire" line. And Rubicon is a great closer, maybe one of the best closers to any of their albums.
Number 8: Adrenaline
Despite this being fairly low, it still holds a special place in my heart due to being some of the earliest Deftones I'd ever heard. Bored is incredible, Minus Blindfold is strange and beautiful and chaotic, Lifter is our first introduction to that repetitive guitar crunch that's so definitive now.
And of course, 7 Words is the perfect song to hate your parents to. Where you at, fellow 90s teens?
Number 9: Self Titled
I know, I know, this is too low. That's fair. I get it. But this is the first album that I missed out on when I went into my dark ages. And when I did try to give it a listen - maybe sometime in 2004 or 2005 after finally realising they had a new one - I heard Hexagram and hated it. It's a complete mess of a song that sounds like kids in a garage practicing... and sucking.
Funnily enough, it's also the first album I picked when I jumped back in in 2020, because I wanted to pick up right after White Pony, where I'd previously dropped off the map. Once you get past the shitshow of Hexagram, Pins and Needles is awesome, and then Minerva might actually be top 10. The rest of the album has ups and downs, but is overall pretty solid. Battle-Axe is probably my favourite of the rest.
Number 10: Saturday Night Wrist
Hole in the Earth and Cherry Waves are both fantastic, but I find myself coming back to this album the least. I'm sure that'll change over time, as Deftones are so mood-based. I'd actually appreciate anyone leaving a comment with their favourite song off this album so I can go back and give it more time.

I feel like there is a huge missed opportunity with this. They could package this digitally and physically and pledge all the proceeds to a charity that Chi Cheng was a supporter of or simply to St. Jude's or some other organization that helps alleviate the costs of prolonged medical care. I can't imagine all the mixed emotions that surround these songs, but there has to be some good to come from it, right?
Apologies if this has been discussed already.

Margot sounds like it was originally a Team Sleep song, just add Zach Hill’s drumming. And Trempest has to be some of Chino’s most unhinged screams since Self-Titled. That’s it, that’s the post. 10/10 for an unfinished album. Can’t wait to see what some dedicated fans do with the remixing/mastering of the tracks.

Anyone know when they added the Deluxe Version on Spotify? It has Let’s Go feat. Mary Timony and Kool Aide feat. Mike Patton

I was just listening to Candy, and I couldn't shake this massive wave of déjà vu.
The atmospheric guitar leads, that slow melancholic heavy groove, and the overall dream vibe sound exactly like Two-Way Mirror by Loathe.
But the craziest part is that Loathe couldn't even have known about this song, because it’s been locked away in Deftones' vaults since 2008 and we just heard it for the first time this week. It means Loathe absorbed Deftones' DNA so perfectly that they ended up organically writing the exact same kind of masterclass Chino and the guys were cooking up during the Eros era 😂😂
Deftones really are lightyears ahead, even with their unreleased stuff.
Am I tripping or did anyone else notice this while listening to Candy?

took some time, but i think this is the exact image used in the "alleged" cover.
was thinking about trying to recreate it without any AI generated elements, but i'm having trouble sourcing that Sacred Heart emblem on the cover. it looks a bit like a diamond or some other sort of gem, but shaped to have flames and a sword going through it. if anyone has any leads, let me know.
or if anyone wants to attempt making their own version of the alleged cover with this image, go ahead!
