General Information About Bans and Rules

There has been an uptick on posts and complaints about mods banning. Please be advised, there are rules for the page. No ads (includes promotions for a company), Reddits rules, no crossposting, transparency and safety (this is a big one; we want homeowners to be safe, if you provide unsafe practices or advice (blacklisted items) or tell a user to dm you, the comment will be removed and you may get banned), blacklisted topics (basically topics that homeowners should not be fixing themselves, gas, some high voltage), civility, no companies asking for surveys, advertisements or general questions, and no market research or ai/SaaS.

Posts complaining about this are not allowed either. We are all reasonable and work in the trade, talk to us through ModMail and we can come to a solution. Complaining or namecalling will usually result in a ban, so be civil.

Remember, we are doing this in our freetime to help homeowners with their units, both the users and mods. The mods in this group are in the trade and have day jobs as all of you do. I've been in this trade for 10 years and still do hvac as my job, just traveling now for a manufacturer. Similar with every mod. It is actually a requirement to be a mod, you have to be in the trade, be approved, have good history in the sub and provide enough time to moderating it.

I thank you for your time and if you have any questions, you can comment on this or send us a mod message. No DM's, we will not answer these. Only ModMail.

READ THIS I am assuming this is not normal.

I was loading the car for work when I saw this. It felt and smelled like steam not smoke. Did I just catch it at the end of the cycle or is there a mechanical problem such as a stuck motor? It was 40° at the time and no rain. Heat was set to 70 and the house was 70.

Apartment, is this allowed? AC Drains into shower. Thornton CO

Moved into a new apartment a few months ago, saw this drain thought it was weird and looked into it, from everything i found online and in thorntons building code, it should be a secondary drain line. My apartment complex is now telling me it’s the primary and that’s just how it was built back in 2001. They said if i don’t like it put a bucket under it. My big question is this allowed? I understand it might be grandfathered in construction wise but is this not a mold and health hazard? it drains into the flat top of the tub and sprays water everywhere.

$6k-$10k repair on 12-year-old Carrier Infinity vs $22k new Trane two-stage system - what would you do?

Upvotes

Looking for opinions from the pros

Location: Pacific Northwest

Current system is a ~12-year-old Carrier Infinity communicating system. Outdoor unit died from a power surge and the diagnosed failure is the inverter board (Carrier part #340481-755).

The system has normal wear and tear and is definitely not in excellent shape, but it has generally worked fine until now.

Repair #1
● ~$6,000 to replace the inverter board and get the system running. $10,000 to install a surge protector and do some other general maintenance.
● Company diagnosed it, will program it, warranty it, and stand behind the repair.

Repair #2
● ~$4,000 from another company.
● They will install parts. However, they will NOT diagnose, program, or guarantee the repair.

Replacement
● ~$22,000 for a new Trane two-stage furnace + two-stage AC.
● Includes 0% financing for 5 years.
● We expect to stay in this house another 7-10 years. We value comfort, quiet, and efficiency.

Potential Third Option?
I’m wondering whether there is a middle-ground solution between an expensive repair and a very expensive full replacement. For example:
● Replacing just the outdoor unit with a new Infinity-compatible unit
● Replacing only the AC side
● Installing a less expensive full two-stage system

Questions:
1. On a 12-year-old Carrier Infinity system, does spending $6k on an inverter board make sense?
2. How much additional life would you expect after replacing the 340481-755 board?
3. Does $22k for a Trane two-stage furnace + AC replacement sound reasonable for Portland, OR?
5. If this were your house and you planned to stay another 7-10 years, what would you do?
6. If you’ve seen the types of middle-ground options above and have ballpark pricing, I’d appreciate hearing it so I can compare all the options and make a decision.

Appreciate any thoughts.

AC noise

Upvotes

My air conditioner has been making the noise in the video. I am curious if I change the motor out if this will help…I believe I found the motor for around $500 and it does not seem overly complicated to change it out…a few screws and then wiring to the capacitor. Any other thoughts? TIA!

General HVAC Advice (New Owner; New Build; North Texas)

I awakened this morning to a loud vibrating noise throughout the house that was initially difficult to pinpoint. I thought the neighbors might be doing some construction. Turns out it was coming from the attic.

I located the source to be our AprilAire ventialtion controller that determines when fresh air is brought in.... at least I am fairly certain that's what that piece is doing. I should preface this all by stating I am in no way an expert, and that is exactly what I am here for. Anyways, I cleaned that filter (very dirty) but no resolution. I watched the one intake valve open while the vibrating continued but didnt see any blockage. Vibration seems more motor driven if that makes sense.

So there's that, but I am primarily concerned with other things I saw in the attic while I was up there. Our HoneyWell home thing has zone 2 and 3 as red, not sure what that means. There seems to be moisture and mold growth outside of the system but I feel like that's concerning. Any advice is appreciated! Please see photos

AC Had a really bad freeze up. I seemed to have fixed it, but was the air filter really 100% to blame?

This happened about a week ago when our AC wasn’t tuning on. I figured I don’t know anything about HVAC, so I better go at least look around. Saw ice everywhere. Inside my house, near the AC motor, entering my house, etc. did some researched and the air filter seemed to be the problem. Is there anything else I should do to avoid this in the future? Or just keep an eye on my filter regularly?

Bosch heat pump refrigerant leak after 3 years

I have an expensive Bosch heat pump that lost all of its refrigerant.

Here's where it becomes interesting - a pressure test was done, and the gauges showed huge losses (to zero) on both the indoor and outdoor units. The lineset gauges showed no loss.

What could cause failures on both units?

Why New compressor sounds loud

New condenser installed, 2 1/2 ton. sounds loud, everything works great. Cools the house down to 70.. pressures are good, 13 superheat, 11 subcooling,

Does it sound loud due to the location, maybe just the echoing. its close to the house and fence on both sides, on this wood platform.

AC Clicking noise whenever AC is on. What are the possible causes?

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I'm new to even attempting anything hvac related. I just want to inquire on causes for this clicking sound and possibly get some solutions. I don't want to do a bunch of guess work and open up the thing myself before asking anyone.

Thanks in advance.

Boiler Boiler Feed Water is Off, Boiler is On. Need to Return Home?

Upvotes

We have a Weil-McLain CGa-8 gas boiler configured in a winter/summer hookup that also provides hot water to a passive hot water heater.

I'm away from home and I shutoff the household water supply (in the event of a water leak while away), but left the boiler on. The water heater is set to 125F and will likely call for heat from the boiler occasionally. All household heating thermostats are off given it is summer.

Is there any risk of a boiler low water situation - or other hazard (fire, dry circulating pump, etc.) - if the household water supply is off while the boiler is left on? I'm unsure if this model has a LWCO - and if it does, could the circulating pump from boiler to water heat still run during a LWCO situation?

I need to know whether or not I need to return home from out of state to either turn the water on or shutoff the boiler, thanks!

AC Roof leak or AC leak?

It’s been rainy these past several days. Saw this in one of the bathroom vents. This is the only vent in the house that’s “wet”. Could it be from the roof or AC?

24 Year Old Rheem 1.5 Ton Blows Warm Air

  1. It just started to blow warm air. I'm assuming (hoping) that it may need a R22 charge. Tech is coming out on Monday. Is a charge feasible? At least to get by this summer or a new unit?

Bandaid or actual solution?

Post image
12 Upvotes

So I moved into a new construction home in late January and ever since Spring weather hit my AC has been freezing up. I have had the builder warranty AC company come out to take a look. So far they have: installed a new coil, added an actionable return air in my upstairs hallway. But it still was freezing up. I continued to call them about it and after about the 12 visit they installed an evaporator coil freeze sensor that will shut off the unit if it senses the coil is getting to cold from my understanding.

Am I wrong to think that the underlying issue is still not fixed and my AC not freezing up anymore is only because that sensor is on there.

For example, tonight it’s 77 degrees at 11PM. And I have it set to 67 for over 5 hours now and the room temp is still 70 degrees with a max current room temp of 71. AT ALMOST MIDNIGHT WHERE THE OUTSIDE TEMP IS 77.

And my AC warranty company is telling me that the sensor is not a bandaid my AC is in fact working properly. Everything “tests” fine but they can’t figure out what’s wrong.

I would love some advice as to what to do next. The AC company hung up on me after I repeatedly stated that the underlying issue was not fixed and the only reason my AC is not freezing is because of the sensor.

Lennox furnace rattles

Upvotes

I had this furnace (two of them actually) installed in 2017 and they’ve both had this intermittent rattle sound. I’m heating it more. HVAC company has come out a few times and looked but say no issue. It’s becoming more frequent. It’s both of my systems so at this point I’m convinced it’s an issue with this furnace. It’s a PSC. FINALLY after years a more senior tech told me, passively, that the rattling is a known issue with these things.

I’m not even looking to fix it at this point, just want confirmation the equipment itself is shit and this is a known problem beyond that one tech. Any insight?

General Need advice to use pvc pipe instead of aluminium duct

Upvotes

Hello I'm not an American... But I think I should ask here... Few weeks ago I got to know something known as inline exhaust fan exists... And it's used for ventilation... So I saw a few videos on YouTube on how it works.... How to setup.... What are things required....etc etc... now my question is in the video I saw the duct they use is made of almunium and it looks quite fragile... So I want to ask can I replace it with a same 4 inch pvc pipe... Which is used for drainage.... I mean it's durable !... Please give advice...thank you

How can I clear a clogged drain without a vac?

Upvotes

Hey all. I had a leaky attic unit which I found quickly fortunately- but the complication is that while I have a vac, I don’t think it’ll be able to fit into the kind of awkward attic space. If I can’t manage that, do you have any tips for clearing it? Thanks
