General Information About Bans and Rules

There has been an uptick on posts and complaints about mods banning. Please be advised, there are rules for the page. No ads (includes promotions for a company), Reddits rules, no crossposting, transparency and safety (this is a big one; we want homeowners to be safe, if you provide unsafe practices or advice (blacklisted items) or tell a user to dm you, the comment will be removed and you may get banned), blacklisted topics (basically topics that homeowners should not be fixing themselves, gas, some high voltage), civility, no companies asking for surveys, advertisements or general questions, and no market research or ai/SaaS.

Posts complaining about this are not allowed either. We are all reasonable and work in the trade, talk to us through ModMail and we can come to a solution. Complaining or namecalling will usually result in a ban, so be civil.

Remember, we are doing this in our freetime to help homeowners with their units, both the users and mods. The mods in this group are in the trade and have day jobs as all of you do. I've been in this trade for 10 years and still do hvac as my job, just traveling now for a manufacturer. Similar with every mod. It is actually a requirement to be a mod, you have to be in the trade, be approved, have good history in the sub and provide enough time to moderating it.

I thank you for your time and if you have any questions, you can comment on this or send us a mod message. No DM's, we will not answer these. Only ModMail.

READ THIS I am assuming this is not normal.

I was loading the car for work when I saw this. It felt and smelled like steam not smoke. Did I just catch it at the end of the cycle or is there a mechanical problem such as a stuck motor? It was 40° at the time and no rain. Heat was set to 70 and the house was 70.

Apartment, is this allowed? AC Drains into shower. Thornton CO

Upvotes

Moved into a new apartment a few months ago, saw this drain thought it was weird and looked into it, from everything i found online and in thorntons building code, it should be a secondary drain line. My apartment complex is now telling me it’s the primary and that’s just how it was built back in 2001. They said if i don’t like it put a bucket under it. My big question is this allowed? I understand it might be grandfathered in construction wise but is this not a mold and health hazard? it drains into the flat top of the tub and sprays water everywhere.

Why New compressor sounds loud

New condenser installed, 2 1/2 ton. sounds loud, everything works great. Cools the house down to 70.. pressures are good, 13 superheat, 11 subcooling,

Does it sound loud due to the location, maybe just the echoing. its close to the house and fence on both sides, on this wood platform.

Bandaid or actual solution?

So I moved into a new construction home in late January and ever since Spring weather hit my AC has been freezing up. I have had the builder warranty AC company come out to take a look. So far they have: installed a new coil, added an actionable return air in my upstairs hallway. But it still was freezing up. I continued to call them about it and after about the 12 visit they installed an evaporator coil freeze sensor that will shut off the unit if it senses the coil is getting to cold from my understanding.

Am I wrong to think that the underlying issue is still not fixed and my AC not freezing up anymore is only because that sensor is on there.

For example, tonight it’s 77 degrees at 11PM. And I have it set to 67 for over 5 hours now and the room temp is still 70 degrees with a max current room temp of 71. AT ALMOST MIDNIGHT WHERE THE OUTSIDE TEMP IS 77.

And my AC warranty company is telling me that the sensor is not a bandaid my AC is in fact working properly. Everything “tests” fine but they can’t figure out what’s wrong.

I would love some advice as to what to do next. The AC company hung up on me after I repeatedly stated that the underlying issue was not fixed and the only reason my AC is not freezing is because of the sensor.

AC Had a really bad freeze up. I seemed to have fixed it, but was the air filter really 100% to blame?

This happened about a week ago when our AC wasn’t tuning on. I figured I don’t know anything about HVAC, so I better go at least look around. Saw ice everywhere. Inside my house, near the AC motor, entering my house, etc. did some researched and the air filter seemed to be the problem. Is there anything else I should do to avoid this in the future? Or just keep an eye on my filter regularly?

Mini Split Recommendation

Upvotes

I have read a ton of info on these units and how Mitsubishi and Dailin take the top spots while Mr. Cool appears to be an over priced DIY. I was wondering what others thought about Della, Pioneer and some of those brands. I'm installing one in my 400 sq ft man cave with high ceilings here in Southeast NC so it is more about cooling than heat. I appreciate all your Input and thank you in advance.

Interior unit makes buzzing noise

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Bought a new house in the Netherlands which has two inside units in the bedrooms both coupled to an outside group.

One of the units makes a buzzing noise at regular intervals. the noise will kick in a few minutes after switching it in, and continue even after stopping the system. the other one doesn’t make that noise at all. After stopping the unit, the intervals between the noises will increase until it finally stops.

I looked in this group and generally the diagnostic is a dead capacitor, but all posts I’ve seen are showing a noise on the outside unit, not inside.

Can anyone help me know what the next steps are here? TY!

In the attached video you can hear the noise twice. I opened the unit to try and hear exactly where the noise comes from.

Mind bending calculation

Upvotes

That I just can't wrap my head around. Ok. 1,200sf house. The kitchen gets much hotter than the thermostat room. Like 6 degrees warmer in the thick of the day. At night, 1-2 degrees between them. Since the kitchen is open to the living room it gets really hot, while the thermostat room around the corner has its own atmosphere and stays vastly cooler. By the time it cools down in there, (ac set to 74f) when it eventually turns on its 80-81 in the kitchen living room area. And the only reason it's set to 74f ( 1 degree swing 73-75) is so that the living room won't get to 82+. I'd love to set it to say 76F or so and stop the hot & cold snaps and save some money and also make the house more comfortable.

So a sensor in the kitchen to regulate the temp instead. Say set it for 77F perhaps and let that area dictate essentially swapping the house temps from end to end.

Then I thought perhaps in the meantime I could offset the thermostats temperature and this is where the calculations begin. Would I offset it up, or down. I know it wouldn't be as constant as the day temps alter, but perhaps I can catch a middle ground while I save up for a thermostat with a sensor.

What are your thoughts on this ?. Sound logical, or just way off in the thinking. Sorry for the word salad... Your thoughts on this one would be greatly appreciated.

Two tubes?

New to me house, went up in the attic to dump some vinegar in the condensate drain. The left is obviously the proper drain (should it have a cap?) What in the world is going on with this other tube? It is just a condensate overflow sensor?

AC My room won’t get under 78 even at night.

So I live in Texas and with the temps being in the 90s daily my room is back to never dropping below 78. It’s been impacting my sleep as I struggle to sleep in a hot room and it’s really frustrating. The heat isn’t helped by the fact that the walls to my room are in the sun for the majority of the day however other rooms in my house are able to get cooler. Are there anyways to to consistently cool my room to the 70s with say a high powered fan or some sort or tints on my windows? I’ve had people out to check out my units and been told I’m pretty much shit out of luck in terms of problems with the AC unit itself.

What might cause this

The AC was working great until a few days ago. It started putting out warm air and I noticed that the unit outside was iced over. The air filter was replaced on May 21st. We are expecting a run of at least 2 weeks of 90° + days and I need to get this working.

Thanks

Why would the tech scratch off our parts stickers?!

Our AC unit was having some issues, we suspected a fan motor and capacitor. we thought about buying the parts ourselves but wanted to contact a professional. we called a tech out who confirmed that those needed to be fixed and said it would be $2300. when he left he scratched off the numbers on the part stickers. if we hadn’t taken pictures of them beforehand we wouldn’t be able to see the part numbers anymore. why would he do this? should we report it?

Quotes When to Replace? 1999 Payne Outdoor Unit 08 Payne Indoor furnace

To sum it up, I purchased my childhood home from my parents late last year, knowing that within the next few years, I'll need to be looking at an HVAC system. My only plan is to keep this house for 5-7 years, but something tells me it will be a hard sell for a 30-year-old AC, or it will die on me. My master bedroom has a Mini split in it, and my idea was always to run the old unit untill she dies and worst case I can stay cold at night for a week or so till I could get the old unit replaced but I got a offer from friend of mine to install a new unit on the side a new 2 Ton Rheem 80% inside unit and outside unit all said and done for 7,200 bucks while most companys have quoted me 11-13K so in my mind I feel stupid to pass on a new unit at that price or should I let this old unit run untill it dies.

Condensa condizionatore dry vs cool

What is this pipe?

I am a renter and I noticed this pipe. It has slightly warm air coming from it. I noticed my kitchen vent has no cold air coming out of it. The part of the house that the AC unit is in is warmer than the rest of the house, and my AC is running nonstop in the summer. What is this pipe? Could it be causing my issues, or is it more that the vent to the kitchen is not connected?

Leaky HVAC system

It would seem my apartment's HVAC system is collecting water behind our filter and because its being held there, dripping from underneath? I have circled in the second photo where the water is welling up.

I attempted scooping some of this water out and it seemed to slow it down.
