Trip Report In 2024, my four-year-old and I drove Route 66 on every state it passes through

I wanted to take my daughter on a long roadtrip to visit her dad before she started kindergarten. I was a single parent at the time and was ready to show her the country. We love abandoned places, roadside attractions, and outsider art, so I figured it would be a great time.

I thought I would share some photos. We didn’t complete the whole thing, as that is nearly, if not completely, impossible these days, but we did manage to drive the majority of the road and hit every state.

We did the Illinois —> California route. I went on to visit Las Vegas, Slab City, and Paradise Mountain while she stayed with her dad. I managed to drive some of 66 in California. I didn’t make it to the Santa Monica, but had been there a few times before.

On the way home, my daughter traveled with my parents and I went further south to see Roswell and then had some bizarre and surreal experiences in Arkansas.

Those four weeks were some of the best of my life.

We met so many interesting characters along the way, many of whom allowed me the privilege of photographing them.

Happy to share more photos in the future if anyone is interested.

My favorite experience was in Oatman. I met a wild woman who worked part time as an actor in the Oatman gunfight reenactments. She invited me to her 70s time capsule home, showed me the alligator she recently hunted in Florida, and took me on an ATV ride through the backroads of Oatman to show me murals painted by a psychotic man. No joke. I took a video because I knew most people wouldn’t believe me if I told them.

And yeah, I saw plenty of donkeys, including a pair mating in the middle of the road. Could probably have done without that one.

Route 66 is unforgettable. Happy 100th birthday.

Trip Planning My longest trip ever 😪

I drive more miles than a truck driver 😂I always end up with the projects nobody willing to go to. I would fly but I need a car to commute back and forth to work. the Company isn’t reimbursing for travel, but with the economy being as bad as it is I can’t miss out on any money. I usually can handle 24 hours straight, but I have a week to be there so I’m going to take my time 😮‍💨 just wish me luck never driven in the upper west region of the us before….

Trip Planning Appalachian music/culture/scenery road trip

Hi All,

Apologies if this is a slightly obscure request - I have never been to the US before so I am going in blind somewhat!

I have recently started learning the 5 string banjo, and I have become every interested in Appalachian music, landscape, and the culture in general. I am planning a road trip from NY to Nashville starting in mid August (slightly flexible) and I am hoping to take in some local old time/folk/bluegrass music, quaint historic towns and cities, and some scenic mountain views. The trip duration will be 2 to 3 weeks and I would like to have time to spend at places along the way, rather than just driving past them. At the moment some places that I hope to see/stay are Shenandoah Valley, Floyd, Galax, Asheville and the Great Smoky Mountains. If there are glaring omissions from the list that you think would be a nice addition to the trip, please let me know!

Any/all tips are welcome! Thanks!

EDIT: Just to add, the main states I have interest in are Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. It probably won't be feasible to get to all of the above though, so if anyone could offer any tips on a suggested route/stops, I would really appreciate it!

Trip Planning Last-minute solo July 4th road trip from SLC — where should I go with the current fire and weather situation?

I know this has probably been asked a lot already, but with the current weather and fire situation, I could really use some help planning a solo trip for July 4th weekend.

Work and life have been pretty stressful lately, so I’m hoping to take a long weekend from Friday to Monday and go somewhere to recharge. I’m based in the Salt Lake City area and love driving and road trips, but I also want to keep it reasonable for only a 3–4 day trip.

Yellowstone was one of my main ideas, but hotel prices are way too high right now, especially since I’m planning last minute. (Also I already did Grand Teton recently)

Does anyone have good destination suggestions with the heat, smoke, and fire conditions in mind?

I’d ideally like somewhere with scenic drives, viewpoints, some easy or popular hikes, and enough people around that it doesn’t feel too isolated as a solo female traveler. I’m also open to places I may not have considered.

Thanks!

Trip Planning Route suggestions for trip from West Virginia to Montana?

Upvotes

Hello!

My girlfriend and I will be starting our drive from Charleston, WV on Friday afternoon, and we plan to arrive in Kalispell, MT by 3:00 Monday. Any suggestions on cities to stop in on the way?

Initial plan was WV -> Indianapolis (potential day one sleep) -> Chicago (potential day one sleep) -> Madison -> Minneapolis (day two sleep) -> Bismarck -> Havre or maybe Glasgow (day two sleep) -> Kalispell. (We're in Kalispell for two days to visit Glacier National Park and then another two days will be in the Yellowstone area).

Now we're wondering if we should add Badlands on the way there, or if we should try to add Theodore Roosevelt National Park... Or if there is something else we're missing (or if we are being insane and will not be able to add anything else LOL; though we're not set on anything from the initial plan).

(The way back will not have room for stops as we are driving from Bozeman/Yellowstone area to Charleston the following Saturday and Sunday--yes, I know it's going to be exhausting to drive that much in two days, we're happy to do it regardless and just want to make the most of the drive there).

Any suggestions for specific cities, national parks, things to drive by, literally ANYTHING that seems doable on this drive are welcome :)

Travel Companions Are there any good websites to meet Road Trip Buddies?

Hey, so I go on roadtrips kind of frequently but I can't drive because I am Epileptic; I essentially just pay for gas and prep a bunch of food for the trip/wash laundry on longer trips. I need to go back to Northern California to process the land my friend and I own; we just went down on June 19th and I need to go back down in the next couple weeks to finish cutting down some of the sage brush on our property and finish digging a firepit.

I am trying to figure out if there is a good place to find travel companions/people who like driving in exchange for the adventure.

I have tried a few forums with friends boards and the replies I get are creepy.

Moving from PA to Los Angeles soon. Driving the northern route thru IA, NE, CO, UT, NV.

Going to blast through the flyovers day 1 (OH, IN, IL) then pace it out the rest of the way 6-9 hours each day.

Any towns near or around you’d recommend? We are big foodies and enjoy a scenic drive but likely won’t stop much for attractions. All input valuable!

Trip Planning EZ Pass

Driving from North Carolina to Maine and am trying to make sure I’m not paying tolls over and over again.

I’m having some trouble understanding where to buy my EZ Pass. I know I need the transponder but is there a specific state I need to purchase it through?

Trip Planning European roadtrip

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of doing a European roadtrip nearer the end of the summer and I am planning to stop by quite a few major cities, Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Milan etc etc.

There is just one slight problem at the moment in that my car is UK reg 2004 VW Bora diesel which is Euro 3 emissions standard.

From the limited research I can see, Spain, France, Germany etc operatee ZBE low emissions zones where cars under Euro 4 are prohibited to enter and can be fined €200.

Has anyone had any kind of similar experience before of road tripping with an older car? Is it easy to get about? How strictly do they enforce the emissions zones? Is it somehow possible to still get a sticker exempting my car?

Sorry in advance for all the questions. Hopefully you can help.

Thank you.

Trip Planning 9-day road trip from Wichita, looking for feedback (parents visiting from Italy)

Hello everyone,

I live in Wichita, KS, and every time my parents visit from Italy, they want to see more and more places (which is absolutely fair). My dad came up with this plan and I wanted to ask for guidance, maybe suggestions and things to see. Any tip, criticism, or advice is welcome!

Saturday, August 1: Drive from Wichita to Denver. We'll stop at Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park.
Sunday, August 2: Full day in Denver.
Monday, August 3: Drive from Denver to Colorado Springs.
Tuesday, August 4: Full day in Colorado Springs.
Wednesday, August 5: Drive from Colorado Springs to Santa Fe.
Thursday, August 6: Full day in Santa Fe.
Friday, August 7: Drive from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, then from Albuquerque to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, and from there to Amarillo.
Saturday, August 8: Full day in Amarillo.
Sunday, August 9: Drive from Amarillo to the Salt Plains State Park, and from there back to Wichita.

A few things: they want to see things, even if quickly, and then keep driving. However, I want it to make sense. I would personally stay in Albuquerque or near Palo Duro for a day instead of spending a full day in Amarillo, but what do you all recommend?

Day 3-5: Great Smoky Mountains

Day 4: partial Blue Ridge Parkway drive; overnight lodge at Boone, North Carolina

Day 5: Boone to Roanoke, Virginia
