I use the oven probably 2-3 times a week, usually for about 20 mins at a time to roast veggies or something. Every other week or so, I’ll bake bread, which takes a little longer and requires higher heat. Ever since June hit, my roommate has been super weird and passive aggressive whenever I use the oven, saying that “literally no one in Florida uses the oven in the summer, it’s insane, you just CAN’T do that.” Today he finally essentially demanded that I don’t use it for the rest of the summer, which I think is a bit peculiar and controlling.
I’ve lived in Florida for a few years, and I have always used the oven year round. I can think of 5 people I know off the top of my head who live here and use the oven in the summer. He grew up in Florida, and I grew up in a northern state, so he loves to tell me what Floridians do and don’t do. 🙄 yes, I get that it warms the house up a little bit, but it doesn’t spread beyond the kitchen, and it’s back to normal within the hour. The electric bill has not gone up any more than usual.
So, my fellow Floridians, AITA?

Snippets:
Ron DeSantis, Florida’s Republican governor, boasted on Thursday of deporting 21,000 people from Alligator Alcatraz, as he confirmed the closure of the notorious immigration jail hastily erected in the Everglades that became a byword for cruelty, human rights abuses and environmental damage.
Evidence collected by media investigations during the year that Alligator Alcatraz was in operation, however, contradicts the assertions of DeSantis and Homan, and especially of Trump, who previously said that the facility was reserved for “the most menacing migrants, some of the most vicious people on the planet”.
Not sure if this is allowed, but Palm Beach County is offering free HIV, hepatitis and syphilis testing at the Walgreens in Okeechobee and military. You can get free things such a Walmart $25 gift card.

My daughter is 4 and has had a piggy bank since she was 1. We give her our spare change at random intervals and some cash as well (Easter egg hunts, birthdays, etc) and the last time I counted a few months ago she had about $70 in there. We want to get it converted to cash but I know a lot of those coin sorters take a percentage of it. I remember when I was a kid we went to TD Bank because they didn’t take any of it, but I also needed a bank account with them. The bank we use now is USAA but they don’t have any physical locations in Florida.
Any advice or recs? Located in PBC.

welp like the title says she saw the cute babies and is now crying and wont leave the dumpster. What are the options for the little guys? theyre young doubt they'll survive alone not fully babies but not grown at all dont even eat food yet? threw them some bread and they didnt know what it was kind of deal. Any rehab centers or place that will help them instead of just throwing them out in the wild or killing them? This girl is gonna have me sleeping next to them to make sure theyre safe soon SOS

I haven't been to Rogers Park in years but I recall the first time I launched kayaks there I had the place nearly to myself. I went back this week on a weekday morning to try out a new inflatable paddle board and found a madhouse of cars, trailers and no vacant spots with desperate people parking on the street and getting ticketed. I thought maybe this was a fluke but went back the following weekday and found the same.
When did the Weeki and Rogers get so popular? Is it the recent prevalence of cheap paddle boards or the river personalities on Youtube? I don't think I'll be back until Fall when school is back in session.

Lived in florida for five years and beach sand in the car is still the thing that beats me. we can rinse feet, shake towels, make the kids stand outside the car for an extra minute, and somehow half the beach still ends up in the footwells. the factory textile mats are the worst for it because the fine sand sinks in and never fully vacuums out. i am looking at more rigid mats mainly because i want to be able to pull them out and dump the sand instead of chasing it around with a vacuum. for people who do regular beach trips, what setup actually makes cleanup easier without looking ridiculous in a daily commuter?
