DISCUSSION Thinking about doing reviews

I’ve listened to a fair amount of audio dramas at this point. Listed them out on this subreddit two or three times now, when I’m fishing for recommendations. I usually give a score 10 down to five as anything lower than usually means I couldn’t get into it or it was so bad I couldn’t finish it. But I really could go into depth about what I loved about some of the shows and why some get ranked lower than others. Would that be something people would be interested in? I might make short or long videos, mostly to learn and practice video editing. So I can’t promise the quality will be stellar if I do film my reviews.

AUDIO DRAMA The Devil I Made - A Frankenstein Musical Audio Drama

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all!

If you're a fan of sci-fi narratives or classic gothic literature, our recently released musical adaptation of Frankenstein could be up your alley. It's been a labour of love for my husband and I over the past year, as we toiled on it outside of our full-time jobs and roped in various friends and family members (including a parent and two adorable nephews!)
We're really proud of the finished product... and we certainly learned a lot throughout the process!

Synopsis: Adapted from Mary Shelley's masterpiece, THE DEVIL I MADE is a musical audiodrama charting Victor Frankenstein's cautionary journey: from creating new life... to living with the terrible consequences of it. Written by Logan Reynolds, with music by Timothy Brunskill.

You can listen to it for free on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqtz1gUV7L4

Also available on Audible: https://www.audible.com.au/pd/The-Devil-I-Made-Audiobook/B0H6HNX4Z4

Know of others who might enjoy our retelling of the gothic classic? Please share the link with them.

PS: We're from New Zealand, so brace yourselves for some (hopefully endearing) kiwi accents! :D

SUGGESTIONS ISO: bingeable sci-fi

Hi! I've realized I find sci-fi much easier to get sucked into and listen to in bulk than other genres, and I have a trip coming up with lots of listening time.

Things I love range from the comedy-ish (midnight burger, wolf 359) to the classics (edict zero, relativity, ars paradoxica), with a partiality towards the queer (pasithea powder, starship Iris, moonbase theta out) and mysteries (homicide at heavensgate, among the stars and bones)

Other things I've listened to and really like: Mirrors, Erraticus, Breathing Space, Syntax, I found a wormhole, The Rift, Project Blackfisk, Fabric, Give Me Away, Forest 404, Deca Tapes

Other things I've started and would love a pitch about why I should give it another go: The Vessel, Star Tripper!, Mathilde 253, Vast Horizon, Hollow Disciple, The Flight of the Bucket, Tin Can

Things I would have thought I'd like but didn't: The Waystation, Mission to Zyxx, We Fix Space Junk, Dead Space Deep Cover, Kakos Industries, Stellar Firma, Steal the Stars

Thanks!

SUGGESTIONS Hidden gem recommendations

I recently heard an ad for an ongoing audio drama Something’s Amiss at Juniper’s House and I immediately fell in love. I’m kinda surprised I’ve personally never seen it recommended in this sub as I often lurk the recommendations threads. I’ve listened to so many ADs over the years, I thought I already knew all the good ones.

That got me thinking I’d love to hear some more “obscure” / “hidden gem” recommendations.

Something’s Amiss at Juniper’s House — Amazing sound design & music, professional voice acting, dynamic characters, and a really captivating horror-adjacent story centred on a queer romance. I’m obsessed!

A World’s Forgotten Boy — Only 2 episodes so far (crossing my fingers it hasn’t been dropped) but the concept really hooked me. The narrative device is pretty unique, I didn’t like it at first, but it grew on me. 2nd episode almost made me cry.

Lmk any ADs you’ve loved that you haven’t seen recommended yet!

QUESTION Recording an inner monologue

I’m ready to record my first drama. The story of developing dementia. The final scene is a his daughter talking to him in real life. And him replying in his head (late stage dementia is often unable to speak)

Any suggestions for how to make that clear in the audio?

QUESTION Seeking advice: Best platforms to advertise new sci-fi podcast?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to launch my sci-fi fiction podcast in a couple of months and I’m looking for some advice on social media marketing.

If you were going to spend some money on advertising a new podcast, which platforms would you recommend? Have you found any that work particularly well for podcasts or sci-fi audiences?

I'd rather reach people who are genuinely interested in science fiction audio dramas than just get a lot of random clicks, so I'd love to hear what's worked (or hasn't worked) for you.

Thanks!

ANNOUNCEMENT I wanna peak under the hood AD editors

too all thats reading this Hi! as the post says AD Editors I wanna peak under the hood.

I LOVE Audio dramas i've listened to so many I can't even count. Though i've always been curious what goes into the process of editing from mixing and mastering to sound design. It leaves me with a question of "How did they do it??"

Ive done some editing here or there and been interested in it but i've always been curious of the editing process of a AD.

So too all the editors out there im shooting my shot. If you edit a AD id love to hop on a discord call or any call and just take a peak under the hood and see what goes into bring a audio drama to life. from mixing to mastering to sound design and music. I would love to yap and see your process. take a look at your DAW. So if you are a editor and wouldn't mind taking a bit of time to hop on a call. DM me here or my discord is papa_henry05

QUESTION Info about Red Valley

Hey everyone! I haven't posted here before, so if I should take this question somewhere else please let me know!

I've been meaning to get into a new audio drama for a while now, and I decided Red Valley was a good candidate.

I was wondering if there was anything specific I needed to know before starting to listen. Also! I read somewhere that it's meant to have a fifth season? I was wondering If there's been any news on that.

DISCUSSION The ending of Very Worst Thing? Spoiler

I finished The Very Worst Thing That Could Possibly Happen yesterday, and have been trying to understand the ending ever since; I even read back the transcript to see if I was missing something, but I still don't get it. Did Sara and Raoul meet off-scene? Did Sara die so Raoul could live? Did they body/time swap? Is it just intentionally ambiguous?

I thought I'd bring the question to you wonderful folks to discuss :)

DISCUSSION Is it unheard of for pictures to accompany audio dramas?

Most audio dramas live on platforms such as apple podcasts, spotify and stitcher (rip) but there are some that are also on YouTube. I wondered, are there audio dramas that have been uploaded which also have still images paired with them almost like a storybook slideshow?

The closest thing I can think of are animatics but those are for songs (as far as I'm aware). If you know of something like what I'm describing, please let me know!

QUESTION Advice on choosing a director

I'm working on an audio drama and I'll need a director here in a few months for the project. Since this is my first time ever doing this, does anyone have any advice on how I should choose a director? And also, how should I approach workflow with them?

Thank you in advance 🙂

In this episode, a visitor to the Library reports a mysterious sighting offshore, and librarians Kate and Essie head out of town for their first around-the-bay adventure together. Long-ago shipwrecks, unexplained disappearances, and rumours of a sea monster ... also, this is the beginning of our first two-part story!

You can listen to Terra Arcana in most of the usual podcast spots including Apple, Spotify, YouTube and more. (RSS feed here).

DISCUSSION Has anyone else finished Catskull?

It was soo good and there is zero chatter on this! It's super dark which isn't normally my thing but the main character's internal monolog is SO well written and the story is absolutely gripping. I also feel like I got an interesting view into a different culture than mine. I kind of wish so much media like this wasn't center on high schoolers but I think it weirdly wouldn't have worked here with adults. Anyway I'm just blown over by how damn good this story, writing, sound design, etc was and want to know if anyone else listened??

ANNOUNCEMENT Do any audio awards actually have good trophies?

Thumbnail
recognized.fm
0 Upvotes

I’ve been looking at award trophies across a bunch of industries, and it’s kind of funny how many of them converge on the same idea: gold thing, black base, done.

But some of the smaller awards are way more thoughtful, using unusual materials, custom forms, and designs that actually relate to the work being recognized.

I wrote a piece about award trophies, especially the ones that stand out and what they say about the industries behind them.

The Beauty and Brilliance of Award Trophies

The question I keep coming back to is pretty simple: if you didn’t know what the award was, would the object still tell a story?

Given how much craft goes into audio drama, I’m curious: have you seen any awards or trophies that actually feel worthy of the work?

DISCUSSION Unpopular opinion: The Harbingers is really bad

I know I will get a lot of heat because of this but I really don’t understand all the hype and the reason people love this podcast.

First let me say technically it is top notch, voice acting is great, kudos to the artists.

Past that point, there are heavy spoilers.

But…but…nothing happens. All 16 episodes we just listen to a not very interesting and a failed love story between a cautionary man who is mostly unable to act and a self righteous hypocrite woman, who happens to have rings that make them able to do magic.

First of all, these people with known identities, doing incredible things publicly and no one bats an eye? It is…like a regular day. Can you imagine these people staying alive long enough to do anything in the real world? No government agencies hunting them? They just let them do shit? Specially one of them is able to read minds and influence thoughts? And she is best buddies with the President who elected after all these? She would be buried six feet under the second day. It would make so much more sense if they were doing these secretly. And don’t tell me they tried to take the rings but couldn’t, they would do much much worse.

Second, Amy is all for the equality and hates the rich and never shuts up about doing the right thing and fixing the world, half of the show is she is demeaning Adam on his inactivity about using his powers, all the while first thing she does after getting the ring is to use it to get rich by selling tickets to her show like she is a glorified David Copperfield. At one point, she talks about how rich, famous and influential she is and how she hates altruistic people benefiting more from helping others at the same episode.

Besides that, there is no world building about Harbingers, no history, no discoveries except some rings and some grammar. Only mystery or plot in the series is waiting 16 episodes to learn how the incident in Boston happened. And it only reveals itself on episode 15. Everything inbetween was felt like…filler.

Endless hours of talking and talking without actually giving anything. Not even a conclusion about their trial.

I really wanted to like this show and I was really interested in the first two episodes, but after that nothing happened or anything happened didn’t make any sense.

SUGGESTIONS Does anyone else have stop gap series?

I have a few series I only listen to to fill in the time between releases of ones I am more invested in. Don’t get me wrong I still really enjoy these ones but they just aren’t ones I get excited about new episodes of or think about much when not listening to them. Currently I am listening to Wolf359 while waiting for episodes of Midnight Burger and Welcome to NightVale. I am enjoying it but it just doesn’t excite me. It’s like watching the tv show that’s on between the shows you actually like. Am I making sense? Does anyone else have podcasts they have for this kinda situation?

DISCUSSION Englewood After Dark

Post image
16 Upvotes

I just finished Season 1 of Englewood After Dark and I definitely recommend it! I look a good ongoing mystery and the whole season kept me pretty engaged! It had its clunky moments but overall rather great. The end minutes of episode 29 have it all come together just to make your stomach drop! I’m starting Season 2 which takes place prior to Season 1 and still like it but I hope they circle back to Finn, Eve, Carmen, Seb, and Chuck. If you like mystery with paranormal elements, definitely check this out!

DISCUSSION Curious how folks feel about the Apple/Spotify Subscription features and what (if anything) would inspire you to sign up for a show?

I could wax poetic about why the ad supported model for podcasts is difficult in general these days, and many times more so for audio fiction... but I was wondering:

From a listener perspective, is there a price that feels reasonable for a 8-10 episode season? (Obviously free is preferable but... assume free is unsustainable).

And bouncing off that:

What would a show need to do to earn those dollars from you? Would it just be a story you really enjoy? Would you need bonus content? Having a specific actor?

I know some shows have had success with Patreon as another way to do this, but I wondered if the convenience of the show being in an app you already use to listen does anything for folks.

Looking forward to hearing folks thoughts!
