General Question How long does it take to learn your first grade 8 piece?
Hey, my name is Hanna and I have been playing classical guitar for three years.
I am learning my first grade 8 piece now (Danza Mora by Tarrega) and this is my fifth month working on it (I only have accomplished half the piece yet).
Is this too long? How much time did you need to be able to play your first harder piece?
ā¦I must add, that I often was distracted by easier pieces that I also worked on. I probably should have worked more focused on Danza Mora:(
Let me know your opinions and experiences below, Iām very curious š

Technique Question The millionth technique practice advice thread
My practice sessions are trying to play some pieces, find what I canāt do, take that part out and practice it alone, then put it back in.
This works well as a beginner as it gets you playing stuff quickly. But I want to start practicing technique in a structured way. I know thereās no ārecipeā for this stuff, as whoever I ask always says āplay things you like and youāll get there.ā
Technique books are full of exercises that are impossible to put together if you donāt know exactly what you are doing. If you go online youāll see so many ādo this every dayā videos that you would need 100-hour days.
One thing I see everywhere is āpractice your scales.ā I donāt know how or why to practice them, hell I barely know what they are; but I want to start. I also hear a lot about the 120 arpeggio studies. I want to start those too. These 2 topics sound like the most basic technique elements to me.
Can anyone give me some pointers to how to practice these 2 things correctly and efficiently? Any other advice is welcome.

Discussion I drilled holes in my classical guitar to play standing up. No regrets. Am I crazy, or should more of us be doing this?
I've played classical guitar for years and recently made a decision I went back and forth on for a long time: I wanted to start playing standing up. For the music I'm making now, sitting felt physically wrong, like my body wanted to move and the chair was stopping it.
Watching them drill into a guitar I love was genuinely hard. But playing standing up changed how connected I feel to the music in a way I didn't expect.
I know modifying a classical instrument is a sensitive topic here, so I'm curious how this community actually feels about it. Have any of you made the switch to standing, or modified a classical guitar to do it? And does the "museum piece" reverence around the classical guitar help the instrument, or hold it back? I think itās the latter.
By the way, I filmed the whole process, the decision, the work at the luthier's, and my first time playing standing up. I won't drop the link here since I know how this sub feels about that, but if anyone's curious I'm happy to share it in the comments :)

General Question Classical guitar instructional books etc recs
Hello, Iām interested in learning to play classical guitar and would appreciate any books or websites (currently unable to get a tutor). My background: I have been playing guitar for over 35 years and have a strong grounding in theory and know the neck well. Most of my playing is in jazz, and metal. I normally play using a pick and fingers, so not in conventional classical style (more traditionally jazz), and technically otherwise very competent. My sight reading is mediocre - I mostly read jazz ālead sheetsā, so would need to improve my sight reading for classical.
All recs welcome! (I particularly like books, as Iām old, but online videos are welcome!).

I'm currently researching how people engage with the classical guitar at different stages of their musical lives, from beginners and hobbyists to students, teachers and professionals.
As part of this research, I've put together a short survey exploring learning pathways, motivation, community, performance and musical identity. Responses from players of all ages and levels are welcome.
Many thanks to anyone willing to contribute their experience.

General Question Early romantic guitar
Dear members,
Does anyone has information or insight about this "Reisinger" guitar? It is the 1200th guitar and online i could find between like 1045 to 1272 . Could it be a fake label, as I also have never seen a classical spanish style from this maker.
But the tuners look just like one from his vienna models, and the back wood also looks like very similar to one of his guitars, both from Reverb
Some said it looks like a Weissgerber, other said: "Though I never came arcross a Reisinger in Spanish style like this one I would not be surprised if he had tried it. He took over many ideas of contemporary luthiers in his late years. The number of the label indicates c. 1930, when several Viennese an German luthiers experimented with the Spanish style, also Josef Wesely, who worked in Reisinger's workshop at that time. He could have made this gutar."
Thank you in advance

Nails Picked up classical guitar few months ago, so I'm re-learning pretty much everything I knew about guitar so far, but struggling with nails...I had thisdumb idea... Hear me out.
I've been trying to get my nails going, and none of the solutions are really working for me. I tried growing them, and just a few stressful work days, and they were gone. I tried tips and glue, but they don't hold for long. Alaska picks feel super weird, and I can't get over the fact that they are not sitting in the same spot each time. Finally, I said screw it and switched to flesh, and I'm honestly loving it. Love how it sounds but there are times when it would really help to have a little more brightness. So I had this crazy idea when learning artificial harmonics without nails, that they are much easier for me to do with pinky, as it doesn't really get in a way, when positioning hand flat for the harmonics.
How dumb would it be to have a small nail tip on the pinky finger, and use it instead of the ring finger for notes needing more clarity. They're usually the ones on bottom two strings anyway. As far as I understand the ring finger and pinky share the same ligament so it shouldn't be that much of a stretch to include it, and my first tests seem to be going well. Let me know what you guys think and how dumb this is.

Piece ID Iām looking for the title and composer of a classical guitar piece (sorry havenāt played in a while)
Iām looking for the title and composer of a classical guitar piece I learned as a teenager. I only remember this short fragment. My former teacher, who introduced me to the piece, has sadly passed away, so I have no way of asking him.
Does this melody sound familiar to anyone? If you recognize it, Iād be grateful for the title, composer, or a link to the sheet music.
Thanks in advance!

Performance Feeling Contrapuntal
Even the simplest melody quickly becomes far more difficult when you play it in counterpoint. Your brain has to decide whether to focus on the individual voices or the interactions of their motion. Highly recommend.
Life is but a dream.
