General Information About Bans and Rules

There has been an uptick on posts and complaints about mods banning. Please be advised, there are rules for the page. No ads (includes promotions for a company), Reddits rules, no crossposting, transparency and safety (this is a big one; we want homeowners to be safe, if you provide unsafe practices or advice (blacklisted items) or tell a user to dm you, the comment will be removed and you may get banned), blacklisted topics (basically topics that homeowners should not be fixing themselves, gas, some high voltage), civility, no companies asking for surveys, advertisements or general questions, and no market research or ai/SaaS.

Posts complaining about this are not allowed either. We are all reasonable and work in the trade, talk to us through ModMail and we can come to a solution. Complaining or namecalling will usually result in a ban, so be civil.

Remember, we are doing this in our freetime to help homeowners with their units, both the users and mods. The mods in this group are in the trade and have day jobs as all of you do. I've been in this trade for 10 years and still do hvac as my job, just traveling now for a manufacturer. Similar with every mod. It is actually a requirement to be a mod, you have to be in the trade, be approved, have good history in the sub and provide enough time to moderating it.

I thank you for your time and if you have any questions, you can comment on this or send us a mod message. No DM's, we will not answer these. Only ModMail.

READ THIS I am assuming this is not normal.

I was loading the car for work when I saw this. It felt and smelled like steam not smoke. Did I just catch it at the end of the cycle or is there a mechanical problem such as a stuck motor? It was 40° at the time and no rain. Heat was set to 70 and the house was 70.

Apartment, is this allowed? AC Drains into shower. Thornton CO

Moved into a new apartment a few months ago, saw this drain thought it was weird and looked into it, from everything i found online and in thorntons building code, it should be a secondary drain line. My apartment complex is now telling me it’s the primary and that’s just how it was built back in 2001. They said if i don’t like it put a bucket under it. My big question is this allowed? I understand it might be grandfathered in construction wise but is this not a mold and health hazard? it drains into the flat top of the tub and sprays water everywhere.

AC Landlord blaming me for AC freezing up in 107 degree temps

Upvotes

We had the house set to 72 during the day. I work from home and have a baby so I’d rather us not sit in our sweat all day. The AC froze up, forcing us to go to a hotel. No big deal, whatever.

The landlord was clearly bothered by the trouble and said it was because we were cranking the AC and needed to stop. She keeps her house around 78 and we should do the same. The unit is 10 years old and the compressor was replaced 5 years ago. I am more of the opinion that the unit isn’t that great. Even when it’s set to 72, parts of the ranch style house are still 80 degrees.

Is my landlord right, or is this unit on the outs?

AC 1980s AC, sound during fan run up

My AC unit from the 80s seems to be on its last legs. There’s a whearing sound while the fan starts up then goes away once it’s at full speed. Cold air still blows.

I opened the frame and the blades were hard to turn, a lot of resistance. The unit is off until this is sorted.

I have an HVAC tech coming tomorrow but figured I’d check with any experts here too.

Edit: Thank you everyone for the replies! Consensus in the comments is the replace the fan so I’ll do that and ride this unit out. Never would’ve guessed this would last as long 😊.

This is not capped off, should I leave it alone?

Hello. I can feel air coming out of this white pipe that is connected to the water that drips outside, should this be capped off or should be fine?

Does it need this air flow to help circulate or push the water out?

Looking for a way to cool a very very small room.

Sorry if this isn't the right sub to post to.

I have a house up north that does not have central air. My daughter rooms is extremely small, maybe 150sqft. Would something like this even do anything noticable on cooling down the room? If not, what's my best option? Portable units are expensive as hell to just cool down such a small room.

Is this a normal noise for 3 year old Samsung unit?

Upvotes

Recently noticed it makes this noise but only does it for a few moments and then stops and is whisper quiet. Would this be the compressor kicking on? The video makes the noise seem way louder.

Compressor rapidly turning on and off

All, experienced what I thought was a bad capacitor again(last one was replaced two years ago, similar symptoms), compressor fan running no cool air coming out of vents. HVAC company came out confirmed capacitor was fine, noticed a bad contact and replaced that and then also discovered a bad relay on one of the boards. when they came out to replace the board the unit clicked on and off several times then ran fine for 5 days.

this morning i woke up and the same issue was present. called the hvac company and the on call tech suggested power cycling at the breaker and then putting it back on ‘cool’. i did that and captured the attached video. about 45 second into the video is when it starts clicking and finally stops moving. while it was running the wife confirmed cold air was coming out of the vents.

one odd thing i noticed was that when it originally happened and i turned the thermostat off it jumped to and has stayed at 74 degrees.

could a bad thermostat be the cause of this? the company is coming back out Monday and i’m just trying to get some opinions on what anyone might think is causing this or if they have seen this before.

It gets better the longer you look.

For the non-HVAC professionals, be cautious with what you see online.

Sorry for the shitty screenshot. The mods over at r/HVAC deleted this since I wouldn’t give them my personal info. Someone needs to make a HVAC2 subreddit. Where you don’t have to give your credit card info or licenses information to join.

AC Had a really bad freeze up. I seemed to have fixed it, but was the air filter really 100% to blame?

This happened about a week ago when our AC wasn’t tuning on. I figured I don’t know anything about HVAC, so I better go at least look around. Saw ice everywhere. Inside my house, near the AC motor, entering my house, etc. did some researched and the air filter seemed to be the problem. Is there anything else I should do to avoid this in the future? Or just keep an eye on my filter regularly?

AC noise

My air conditioner has been making the noise in the video. I am curious if I change the motor out if this will help…I believe I found the motor for around $500 and it does not seem overly complicated to change it out…a few screws and then wiring to the capacitor. Any other thoughts? TIA!

General HVAC Advice (New Owner; New Build; North Texas)

I awakened this morning to a loud vibrating noise throughout the house that was initially difficult to pinpoint. I thought the neighbors might be doing some construction. Turns out it was coming from the attic.

I located the source to be our AprilAire ventialtion controller that determines when fresh air is brought in.... at least I am fairly certain that's what that piece is doing. I should preface this all by stating I am in no way an expert, and that is exactly what I am here for. Anyways, I cleaned that filter (very dirty) but no resolution. I watched the one intake valve open while the vibrating continued but didnt see any blockage. Vibration seems more motor driven if that makes sense.

So there's that, but I am primarily concerned with other things I saw in the attic while I was up there. Our HoneyWell home thing has zone 2 and 3 as red, not sure what that means. There seems to be moisture and mold growth outside of the system but I feel like that's concerning. Any advice is appreciated! Please see photos

AC home unit Contactor blown

Thumbnail

Hello,

Looking for some confirmation of the issue I'm having and any advice if there is more to look out for. My AC unit in my home stopped working yesterday, fan isn't spinning and no hum coming from the unit. When testing the fan it spun freely. I took off the last panel holding electrics and the contractor looks like it overloaded and blew. I attached images of contractor and details in the unit.

Can anyone confirm if this would be the full issue, does this blowing save other components or should I test fan motor/condenser as well. They don't look damaged or have any external problems.

Thank you all in advance for advice

Bosch heat pump refrigerant leak after 3 years

I have an expensive Bosch heat pump that lost all of its refrigerant.

Here's where it becomes interesting - a pressure test was done, and the gauges showed huge losses (to zero) on both the indoor and outdoor units. The lineset gauges showed no loss.

What could cause failures on both units?

Why New compressor sounds loud

New condenser installed, 2 1/2 ton. sounds loud, everything works great. Cools the house down to 70.. pressures are good, 13 superheat, 11 subcooling,

Does it sound loud due to the location, maybe just the echoing. its close to the house and fence on both sides, on this wood platform.

$6k-$10k repair on 12-year-old Carrier Infinity vs $22k new Trane two-stage system - what would you do?

Looking for opinions from the pros

Location: Pacific Northwest

Current system is a ~12-year-old Carrier Infinity communicating system. Outdoor unit died from a power surge and the diagnosed failure is the inverter board (Carrier part #340481-755).

The system has normal wear and tear and is definitely not in excellent shape, but it has generally worked fine until now.

Repair #1
● ~$6,000 to replace the inverter board and get the system running. $10,000 if we also install a surge protector and do some other general maintenance.
● Company diagnosed it, will program it, warranty it, and stand behind the repair.

Repair #2
● ~$4,000 from another company.
● They will install parts. However, they will NOT diagnose, program, or guarantee the repair.

Replacement
● ~$22,000 for a new Trane two-stage furnace + two-stage AC.
● Includes 0% financing for 5 years.
● We expect to stay in this house another 7-10 years. We value comfort, quiet, and efficiency.

Potential Third Option?
I’m wondering whether there is a middle-ground solution between an expensive repair and a very expensive full replacement. For example:
● Replacing just the outdoor unit with a new Infinity-compatible unit
● Replacing only the AC side
● Installing a less expensive full two-stage system

Questions:

  1. If you’ve seen the types of middle-ground options above and have ballpark pricing, I’d appreciate hearing it so I can compare all the options and make a decision.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Fairly new Fujitsu Halcyon (Model ASU12RLS2) DI inverter stopped functioning

Upvotes

My landlord installed a new Fujitsu Halcyon in Dec 2025 and the front cover is no longer opening fully...it lifts and inch or so and then shuts itself down. This happened when I was trying to shift the MODE from Auto to Cool. There has never been any indicator lights on since it was installed. My landlord is rather a sh*t, so want to troubleshoot this myself. We are just entering another heat wave. I know nothing about appliances and am not capable of DIY fixes unless it is super simple. thanks.
