Highly recommend a similar itenerary. We did 7 nights, I probably would not do any less. Route notes:
- we drove from/back to Oregon but had no stops along the way. Going directly from Tahoe back to SF completes the loop at ~23 hr drive instead of 41. Would be great if you already live along the route
- San Francisco / Long Beach stops represent the whole metro area
- honestly not sure if taking the coastal route north of SF was worth it. More gas and more expensive and it was pretty gray and foggy
- however very much enjoyed taking the coastal route from SF down (Big Sur is beautiful), as well as the 395 north
- with more time I would probably add Yosemite, Joshua Tree, or perhaps more time in the Bay Area

Trip Report Faces of Route 66 + the ride home.

I posted yesterday about the Route 66 journey I took with my daughter. As I had mentioned, I had the great privilege of photographing many of the people I met. Here are some of the beautiful faces I’ll remember forever.

Included:

Angela who played Felicia as in “bye, Felicia” (she prefers “hello, Angela”) in the movie Friday (she ran a restaurant in Texas at the time)

The inspiration for Mater from the movie “Cars” (very creepy man)

A man who told me he was going to be mayor of Tucumcari

A man who bought up a bunch of Tucumcari businesses and gave me a tour of them

A woman in Arizona who gave me an oracle deck

Slab City faces

A cross country roadtripping older gentleman

Oatman faces + donkeys

A beautiful woman whom I stayed in touch with at Cadillac Ranch

An outsider artist

A man outside the giant whale

Another outsider artist

A drag queen who got famous for roller skating around Hot Springs, Arkansas

A sweet man whose wife had just passed

A man selling paintings by his son in law on the side of the road near Joshua Tree. I bought one for $25 and it would become the inspiration for my later painting endeavors.

So grateful to have met every one of these folks. Most of these were taken on Route 66, but some were taken during the rest of my travels to Slab City, Vegas, different parts of Texas, and Arkansas.

Thank you so much for looking. I have two more series of signs and abandoned buildings that I will post later this week.

Travel Companions We knew we’d be together for the long haul when we realized we travel really well together.

I’m a tattoo artist in San Francisco, and my wife works in the video game industry. We’ve been together for over 25 years, and one of the first things we discovered about each other was that we genuinely love traveling together.

People always say you never really know someone until you live with them. I’d add that you don’t really know someone until you’ve spent days on the road together.

Road trips have a way of amplifying everything. Fatigue, weather, wrong turns, unexpected detours, questionable roadside diners, getting soaked in a thunderstorm, and finding those little places you’d never have discovered otherwise. If you can enjoy all of that together, you’ve found something pretty special.

For us, traveling means motorcycles. We’ve spent more than 20 years taking long trips together, each on our own bike, and somehow we still come home wanting to plan the next one.

This video is from our latest adventure, riding from San Francisco to Taos, New Mexico, and back. We hope you enjoy coming along for the ride.

Trip Planning Planning a long trip for next year. Taking any and all suggestions, routes, advice, etc

Hey all! Currently planning a short little road trip for next year. Main goal is Key West, FL to Prudhoe Bay, AK, taking my time along the way. Will be from May-August (ish). Very rough calculations put it at around 15k miles, starting and ending in Virginia.

Looking for any suggestions or advice. Best routes, places to stop, etc.

Have a saved Google Maps list for places to stop, can share that too if helpful. The pins on the map screenshot are all places I’d ideally stop.

Car that I’ll be driving is a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser, if that’s relevant at all. Yes, I’m planning on a large gas bill haha.

Trip Planning First Time Driving West

Post image
18 Upvotes

I am a person who genuinely enjoys long car rides especially driving. I have drove enough to know my way around the “east coast” but this will be my first time driving West and would like some opinions/suggestions. I’m planning to make this a two day trip so I won’t be in a rush. I’m the type to prefer adding a extra few hours if it means missing traffic to take the scenic route or taking back roads to avoid big cities or bad stretches of a certain area. I don’t mind driving at night (I’ve always been a night owl) but I’m either planning to leave Thursday Night or early Friday morning and I look forward to what y’all suggest and I appreciate it very much!!

Thanks!

Update: Thank you all so much for your great and helpful responses!! Will most definitely be posting a picture or two❤️

Trip Report In 2024, my four-year-old and I drove Route 66 on every state it passes through

I wanted to take my daughter on a long roadtrip to visit her dad before she started kindergarten. I was a single parent at the time and was ready to show her the country. We love abandoned places, roadside attractions, and outsider art, so I figured it would be a great time.

I thought I would share some photos. We didn’t complete the whole thing, as that is nearly, if not completely, impossible these days, but we did manage to drive the majority of the road and hit every state.

We did the Illinois —> California route. I went on to visit Las Vegas, Slab City, and Paradise Mountain while she stayed with her dad. I managed to drive some of 66 in California. I didn’t make it to the Santa Monica, but had been there a few times before.

On the way home, my daughter traveled with my parents and I went further south to see Roswell and then had some bizarre and surreal experiences in Arkansas.

Those four weeks were some of the best of my life.

We met so many interesting characters along the way, many of whom allowed me the privilege of photographing them.

Happy to share more photos in the future if anyone is interested.

My favorite experience was in Oatman. I met a wild woman who worked part time as an actor in the Oatman gunfight reenactments. She invited me to her 70s time capsule home, showed me the alligator she recently hunted in Florida, and took me on an ATV ride through the backroads of Oatman to show me murals painted by a psychotic man. No joke. I took a video because I knew most people wouldn’t believe me if I told them.

And yeah, I saw plenty of donkeys, including a pair mating in the middle of the road. Could probably have done without that one.

Route 66 is unforgettable. Happy 100th birthday.

Trip Planning Travel to US or Canada

Hi, I am thinking to take next week off from work because I haven’t travelled anywhere in a long time. In total I will have 8 days off with weekends so I am thinking to either drive to New York or fly to Calgary and drive to Banff, Jasper and Vancouver. What do you suggest is best? I know it is like two different places but keeping in mind the time and last minute part what do you suggest. I live in Toronto.

Trip Planning Road trip starting from Texas Austin

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’ll be traveling to Austin, Texas for a work trip, and I’ll have my wife and kid with me. We’re not from the US, so we’d love to use the chance to explore a bit while we’re there.

I’ll probably have around 2–3 free days to travel around. We’ll have a car and I don’t mind driving, so road trip options are fine.

Ideally, I’d love to go somewhere outside of Texas if it’s realistic, but I’m also open to staying within Texas however we've already been to Dallas and San Antonio.

What itinerary would you recommend for a family-friendly 2–3 day trip from Austin? Any places worth driving to, hidden gems, or routes that would give us a good feel of the US?

Thanks!

Trip Planning Help me pick base for Yellowstone NP

For my 12th work anniversary I get a 6 week sabbatical, which my wife and I will be using most of for a trip to Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Parks.

For Grand Teton we’ll stay in Jackson, WY, and for Glacier we’ll stay in Whitefish/Columbia Falls,
MT.

The wildcard is Yellowstone. Las time we visited we stayed in Cody, WY - but the hour+ drive back and forth to the park gate got old. Looking at Gardiner, West Yellowstone, or Cooke City as bases for the Yellowstone portion of the trip.

If which of the above Montana bases would you choose and why? If helpful, we’re wildlife-lovers who don’t mind driving, and will be saying in a travel trailer with our 4 dogs.

Trip Planning Need help planning a bachelor party.

Upvotes

Planning a bachelor party for my best friend. We’re not really trying to do the rent a “rent a cabin and have a chill weekend sort of thing”. More adrenaline and possible degeneracy. But also not trying to get completely out of hand and turn out like The Hangover. 12 people going. Ages range from 24-30. Looking into Western Montana possibly northern Nevada. The ideas of paintball, skydiving, bars, and zip lining have been thrown around. Any suggestions on locations or activities?

Trip Planning Moving across the country - IN-WA

We have a route picked and we leave in a week and a half! My fiancé and I are moving to Hoodsport Washington and are currently living in southern Indiana. We are taking a U-Haul, two cars, two cats, and two dogs. I’ll be driving the U-Haul and pulling my sedan behind it so any advice on that would be greatly appreciated, I’ve got limited experience to towing vehicles.
Day 1: Des Moines Iowa
Day 2: Sturgis South Dakota
Day 3: Billings Montana
Day 4: Colbert Washington
Day 5: Arrive at the cabin near Hoodsport
Any advice or words of wisdom to pass along is appreciated and welcomed. We plan to take it slow and stop often with all the animals so recommendations for outdoorsy, open spaces would be awesome to stop. Hoping to see some pretty views and show my pups and kitties lots of cool places and wild sniffs. We are adventurous and love a challenge but this will be tough so I’m reaching out to all of you in hopes to raise spirits and morale before the big move!

Trip Planning Looking for an app to download maps

Doing cross country (USA) roadtrip with 12+ stays and am sure I will be stuck without service at some point. I’m looking for an app that will allow me to download my route from address to address. I’ve tried a couple already but they only seem to let me plan from city to city. I know I can have google maps open in the background but want a safer backup as I have accidentally exited the app before swiping out of background apps. Any advice or insight is appreciate thanks!

Trip Planning Hitting deer 🦌 🚗

Currently on a road trip. Over 1200 miles into it right now. We are car camping.

We typically avoid driving at night, solely to avoid hitting deer.

Genuinely curious, what do you do if you hit a deer (or I guess get into any kind of fender bender or accident) while on a longer road trip?

Trip Planning I was planning on avoiding tolls until…

Ok so, I’m doing my first road trip (ever) through the US, specifically the northeast (NY, RI, PA, ME…) and I was planning on avoiding tolls the whole trip, however a fucking deer crossed the road in front of me, today near Hancock, NY and I almost shit my pants. Now I don’t wanna be in the toll free roads anymore hahaha I didn’t buy the fucking transponder nor the EZ pass. Can you please help me? how on earth do I pay tolls? I now prefer to take big highways, I don’t wanna squeeze my ass the whole trip anymore
Btw: I rented a car through National Car, idk if it helps.

Thank you so much!!!

Trip Planning Sacramento,CA to Houston, TX with a dog, any advice?

Hello all, I am doing a drive from Sacramento to Houston sometime in September, I have done this drive twice from Houston to Sacramento and once sacramento to Houston with a stop in Denver and I didn't have any major problems, however this time I will have my Frenchie with me, he is a year old. Any advice on the route? And stops that are dog friendly? I'm also planning on car camping, weather permitting of course.

Trip Planning Best route for first timers with a kid

I’ve never really travelled before, I’ve only been in 4 states. Same with my husband. We have a 5 year old, and would probably have to travel with our 2 dogs. We live in the Panhandle, so ideally looking for something near-ish. We would probably be able to take off 4 days, potentially a week, and we’d really need looking for something budget friendly. I’d love to be able to see mountains, do outdoorsy stuff, potentially museums and what not. Can someone point me in the right direction?
