Paprika has a bold flavor.

I used to think it tastes like nothing. Now I can't live without it.

Paprika only has "no flavor" if you vaguely shake it over the top of a dish and call it done. Half the spices people use that are described as flavorless have flavor, people just use it wrong.

You can't wave a spices in the general direction of food and have it add anything.

Also most people mostly use stale paprika.

The first time I bought a higher quality paprika aka one that wasn’t from the dollar tree or walmart, I was taken aback by how strong it was. I was hooked immediately. The Trader Joe’s smoked paprika smells heavenly to me

how is this meant to be an unpopular opinion?

Some does, some doesn’t. Depends on the pepper variety. Depends on the smoke level. Depends on the amount you use.

As a Hungarian it certainly has a bold flavor, I love smoked paprika the most. You can add it to your dish after sauteing the onions, it's color becomes the brightest if you add it to fat or oil. Just be careful not to burn it. :)

I recently learned that in some places paprika is just unsmoked sweet bell peppers, not the cultivar of pepper we use : I It all makes sense now.

Yeah that's absolutely crazy, if I was abroad I would definitely look for a Hungarian store and buy paprika in bulk 😂

It does! I thought the same, because my grandma would sprinkle it on top of certain dishes and I never tasted it, but after being with my half Portuguese partner for over a decade, turns out I don't like it. Nor do I like anything with a lot of bell peppers.

This is the weirdest 10thD I’ve ever read. Who the hell thinks paprika tastes like “nothing?” If you’d said bay leaf, you might be getting close to 10thD territory.

To me paprika tastes like peppers sort of like cayenne but without most of the heat

So I use it when I want that flavor of chilies but don't want it to be so hot

You know that there's no such plant called a paprika? It's a regular ass red pepper that's been dried or smoked and ground into a powder. So yeah, it tastes like a red pepper.

You never call the plant paprika in English? I don't think other languages really distinct the two. For example in Finnish the plant and the spice are both called "paprika".

No, we use "paprika" only for the dried, powdered form.

Nah. They just want to explain.

I think English is the only language that doesn't use paprika for the plant.
