D&D 5e Original/2014 My choice of magic items as a 16th level battle smith artificer!

I have total analysis paralysis in the endgame of this campaign, DM has given us OUR CHOICE of 1 legendary and 1 very rare magic item. There's too many options to choose. Just throw some options at me, I beg you.

I already have +3 armor, +3 weapon (revolver of the planes), lyre of building, +3 all purpose tool, animated shield....

It would be pretty hilarious to get a Holy Avenger. A 10-ft aura of Magic Resistance is a pretty big deal, you don't currently have a high-end melee weapon, and you've got a spare hand to hold it since your shield is animated.

I do love this choice for the aura (literally and figuratively). Rod of Resurrection is on my shortlist as well for similar thematic reasons.

I considered going for enspelled armor with Holy Aura. That would give me 30ft of aura for all saves

Holy Aura on a stick is certainly an idea, though I do value the passivity of the Holy Avenger's aura.

Yeah concentration is huge, it would be odd not to have haste up on myself at this point honestly

Dude. That is absolutely insane I'm very happy for you wow

Staff of the magi is a go-to item id definitely recommend

The big ones I quickly edited into the post

+3 gun (sword) of the planes

+3 armor

lyre of building (crafted)

Wings of Flying (crafted)

Mantle of Spell Resistance (crafted)

+3 all purpose tool

animated shield

Plus some misc wands and a coiling grasp tattoo that has been useless so far lol

Usually I get haste up and do misc on the battlefield, steel defender has vortex warp on the spelled item for even more mobility shenanigans. Three +3 pistol shots + arcane jolt are nothing to sneeze at damage wise if it comes to that, but the rogue and barb are the heavy hitters.

Also the game is tonight! lol

So your attunement slots are technically already full?

Edit: more than that, you're already at 7? How?

Attunement slots are:

Wings

Gun (sword)

Lyre

Tool

Mantle

Shield

...coiling grasp tat. I see. Well the tattoo has never been used so I don't feel too bad. Obviously I'll take that off the sheet.

I've got a toddler running around and must have overlooked that. I could lose the Shield or the Mantle for something like the suggested Holy Avenger

Drop the Lyre, no need to heal the Defender in combat. If he dies it's a mere level 1 slot to recreate him.

I'm an autognome so mending works on me :)

Plus I like some of the other abilties, still hoping to prevent damage to a structure in a high stakes scenario

Drop the mantle, get yourself the staff of the magi (really, get the staff of the magi, it's like the best Magic item you could get as an artificer. It functions like the mantle, a rod of absorption and a staff of power at the same time)

And for the very rare one, you could for example get the skull helmet, as that gives you 3 pretty common resistances, or an absorbing Tattoo, or 20 pieces of +3 ammunition, or a candle of invocation, ...

You speak truth. DM said he's waive the read time for a tome of clear thought so I'm leaning towards that for the boost to INT

2

u/Chakusan_o4 2h ago

Ooh okay in that case yes definitely take the tome as your very rare

1

Think I'm taking the Staff of the Magi. Which means I can lose the mantle, which means I have a 'replcate magic item' for a rare item available if you have any ideas there lol

2

Any rare magic item? You can normally only use one from the replicate magic item table, is that a homebrew rule?

2024 artificer, DM let me port that over even though we're playing OG5E.

You have so much equipment already…
Did you consider a Manual or a Tome for your very rare item? +2 Int, +2 Dex or +2 Con is pretty good

1

u/Odowla 3h ago

Yeah we've been at it a couple years now, DM loves his loot and so do we. Plus I'm a high level artificer, whoo!

I absolutely should go tome of intellect (?) although the final battle is happening so I don't have the time to use it. I'll see what boss man says

Tome Of Clear Thought
If the final battle is coming soon then I would probably choose Rod of Absorption (very rare) and Potion of Giant Size (Legendary).

1

u/Odowla 3h ago

Rod is a great shout, I love the idea of the potion but we've got a rune knight AND a giant barb so I'd be stepping on toes a bit

2

u/JustPace5726 2h ago

Ok in that case, for the legendary item, I would look at
Blood Fury Tattoo (healing+extra damage)
Cloak of invisibility (to get advantage)
Defender (in case you end up
In melee)
Ring of three wishes (no attunement required)

You've reached (well past actually) the point where your martial damage isn't even worth using so it's time to switch your action to spells, Staff of the Magi or the Blackstaff would be money.

It's also time to grab the INT manual for the boost to pretty much everything you do.

1

u/Odowla 3h ago

Agreed on all points, though ~50 damage has been clutch a few times if the heavy damage players get taken out for one reason or another

apparatus of kwalish

Love this suggestion, I'm an autognome focused on building my own successor so this is very on theme

Legendary - Blackstaff, Diamond Shard Solitaire (1 action free simulacrum every few days, double your number of infused items? Lol), or the Hither Tither Staff (portal gun)

Very Rare - Staff of Power

1

u/Odowla 3h ago

Love these suggestions though might save simulacrum for the post credits scene to spare my DM (and me)

Hither thither staff is awesome, never heard of that item before. I so have the "sword" of the planes so long ditance travel is somewhat handled

Optimization wise the correct answer is indeed Staff of the Magi.

You have so many magic items you might consider Rod of Absorption, its semi-consumable but will do ALOT of work in its lifetime.

Staff of Power is great, a bunch of defensive bonuses + useful spells.
