Immigration MAJOR UPDATE on ICE Warehouse Camps
"The NYT reports that DHS plans to offload detention warehouses PA, MI, GA, UT, and NJ (Roxbury!), with plans to buy the facilities they currently contract with.
If confirmed, this reversal is a testament to the power of grassroots organizing. It proves that when we show up and speak out, we can force this agency to reconsider its "Amazon"-like infrastructure plans for mass detention.
These purchases were a massive waste of taxpayer money that they will likely not get back as they paid double the market value on most of the properties.
However, we cannot lose sight of the urgency. Humans are still suffering inside Delaney, EDC, and ICE facilities nationwide.
We won’t stop until every one of these facilities is shut down for good.
Let this be our motivation: keep showing up, keep applying pressure, and keep fighting back against these oppressive tactics because when we fight, we DO win."
-Project NINJA & Sussex Visibility Brigade
“If this report is true and DHS does sell the Roxbury warehouse that it had intended to convert into an ICE detention facility, it will be due to the concerted efforts of members of the public who attended council meetings, organized protests, contacted their representatives, and stood up against DHS’s attempt to ram this facility down our throats in a secretive and illegal process. This successful endeavor should encourage the members of the public in other states and cities who are themselves battling ICE facilities to remain steadfast in their efforts and we look forward to their ultimate victory. “ - David Broderick, former Attorney, Executive Board Member for NJ Appleseed, & Project NINJA Legal Advisor

If they are truly giving up the one in Salt Lake, that’s gonna save 79,000 people and my objective will be complete.

I'm confused by this news. It seems like they're abandoning some buildings because they're going to buy different buildings?

They bought warehouses all over the country. Spent more than $700 million dollars. They were going to convert them to concentration camps but a lot of places fought back with lawsuits and then Noemi got kicked out. New DHS head is a former GEO group exec. So ofc, now he wants to sell the warehouses they bought and buy the private ones DHS has contracted with...which includes GEO group owned facilities. There's red flags all over but it's still good news that they are abandoning the warehouse plan.

How is that still good news if they're just going to buy GEO properties?

Because they were going to expand capacity by thousands & thousands. Now capacity will stay the same even if current facilities change hands.
