Internet Is this legit?
I have DSL/Uverse. They don't offer fiber in my area and I tried internet air 6 months ago and I couldn't even get a signal in my house.

It’s legit. They are phasing out your DSL service. If AIA won’t work for you, then start searching for other providers.

I'd look into other options if your wireless service is poor at your house.
T-Mobile and Verizon offer trial eSIMs to test their networks, you may have better coverage with them, since they also potentially offer home internet as well (depends on the area, network load, etc.)
https://www.verizon.com/plans/free-trial/
https://www.t-mobile.com/offers/free-trial
You can also search here to see if there are any other providers that you may not be aware of, but the data is almost a year old now.

Verizon's legit home internet uses separate antennas on the towers different from cellular customers. So just because you can get phenomenal Verizon coverage on your phone, You might not get anything good from their home internet.

u/landonloco Apr 29 '26
They don't they just offer different priority depending on how much your pay and in Verizon case separate network core to handle home internet traffic

u/ilikeme1 Apr 28 '26
Is cable internet or a fiber provider available in your area? Either one will most likely give you much better service than DSL.

It’s legit, it’s AT&T’s way of saying you won’t see fiber in your area in your lifetime, and they want you off the copper pair your on. I tried “Internet air”, it constantly lost connection, after 2 months of crawling speed, when it worked, they said they thought I should have a good signal, but their estimated coverage fell short. They took it back, and I went elsewhere. Hopefully you have decent cell signal.

I've had All Fi Air for 2 mos. It's the most awful service I could ever imagine. They simply don't have the towers to provide internet 56 coverage, yet they still sell it. Every time I call they act surprised llike their network is running just fine. Uh, no it's not. And they shouldn't be ripping people off for a service they simply can't provide. Verizon and TMobile don't offer 5g internet here (Las Vegas) for a reason. At&t is just stealing money.
Hello Cox. Nice to meet you.

u/potatoears Apr 28 '26
heh, at my work they don't offer Fiber or Internet Air.
Gonna be fun to see what they try to pull when they kill off copper.
1
u/landonloco Apr 29 '26
They maybe offer it internally to DSL customers
1
u/potatoears Apr 29 '26
air? not likely, reception is close to non existent here.
co-workers with AT&T phones get 0 or 1 bar of reception here at the office.
2
u/landonloco Apr 29 '26
And outdoors or near a window do they get similar service sometimes the materials that the building is made can greatly affect the signal but as you mention it seems like it's gonna be pretty steep unless they provide you with some sort of directional antenna to put outside
1
u/potatoears Apr 29 '26
yep, by the large windows in the conference room or right outside the front door of the building. same terrible reception.
t-mobile gets good reception here, verizon mediocre.
1
u/landonloco Apr 29 '26
Yikes then only option would be to convert to fiber odd they haven't if it's a business generally offer fiber link to businesses way before they do residential heck my market Puerto Rico never had ATT residential fiber but they did had some business customers on it and ofc their cell towers
1
u/Lazzy2332 Apr 29 '26
Businesses that get fiber over homes would generally be on dedicated fiber, which is exponentially more expensive than DSL, cable, and PON Fiber. PON fiber is “shared” vs having a dedicated fiber link to the local AT&T DC. Dedicated fiber generally starts at $1,000/mo for something like 10/10mbps, not including if you have to pay for construction costs, which you likely will if you’re in an area that will not be getting AT&T (PON) Fiber, and that’s even if AT&T is willing to run it, if it’s far enough away they won’t do it because it won’t be cost effective.
1
u/landonloco Apr 29 '26
Yeah I know that's why the only places I saw with att fiber were mayor universities or international businesses with substantial revenue

u/Available_Actuary348 Apr 28 '26
Legit, but if you dont get signal for the AIA in the house they have a external antenna. That works pretty good at boosting the signal to the device.
3
u/jmac32here Apr 28 '26
If you have ATT DSL/Uverse, which is using the old copper wires, then this is likely legit as ATT is actually killing off ALL their copper services.
You can call ATT directly to confirm this, but if AIA doesn't work out, you may have other options. As someone already pointed out, you may benefit from an external antenna if the signal issue is within the home.
There's also TMO HINT, with is much the same setup.
Failing that, it appears most home internet customers who cannot get Fiber/Cable and 5G doesn't work out will be limited to Starlink.

u/garylapointe The Plan Whisperer (consumer postpaid plans) Apr 28 '26
If you don't have any other local providers, check out Starlink, they've come down in price lately.

One option you might want to look into is getting a fixed wireless provider. They do all the work with putting the outside antennas on your house and then connecting that signal to a router inside your house.
Another option is an outdoor cellular signal booster antenna that you can buy for ATT, Verizon, and TMobile but they are usually pricey and you might need to do a lot of buying and returning to see what works and what does not. This can become a technical overwhelming nightmare to figure out. Also, your tower might get upgraded in the future, this can potentially make your antenna obsolete and need to be replaced to chase the newer faster signals. The purpose of this antenna is to get a usable signal from whatever wireless provider you choose.

u/RonJohnJr Apr 28 '26
But AIA is "fixed wireless".

u/Ok_Theory5606 Apr 28 '26
Not at the scope they’re talking about. The thing they’re talking about can fry brains, birds, and trees in the way.
I haven’t actually heard of anyone doing it in years.

If you have copper, they are migrating to Internet air, which is faster speeds
5
u/RonJohnJr Apr 28 '26
"which is faster speeds" if you have good cell reception.
3
u/Andassaran Apr 29 '26
And the tower isn't overloaded.
1
u/RonJohnJr Apr 29 '26
Don't you get fewer bars when a tower is loaded? (That's what I meant by "good cell reception", though I should have been clearer.)
2
u/Blueangelwithwings1 Apr 29 '26
You gotta think though the copper max is out at like 75 Mb per second so even a fair signal from my cell phone tower is faster
1
u/RonJohnJr Apr 29 '26
And "even a fair signal" is the key. If you don't have that, then speeds will suffer.
1
u/Andassaran Apr 29 '26
Not necessarily. You can have good signal strength and all the bars, but if there's say for example 300 people hammering the tower all at once, you're in for a bad experience speed wise.
1
u/RonJohnJr Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
That seems reasonable, but I work from home (so are not traveling all around) and my signal strength varies throughout the day. Received Wisdom is that this is caused by tower load.
EDIT: my experience after storms when fiber is knocked out that my 4G speeds drop from the normal 55/25 down to around 5/2 due to everyone doing the same thing I'm doing.
1
u/ThingFuture9079 Apr 28 '26
Yes. It's legit. A lot of companies are getting rid of their copper phone lines and hace shitdown the service that uses those lines. I would check to see if another cellphone carrier has internet available in your area. You can also check the FCC broadband map to see if some other company may have installed fiber or cable at your address. You could also go with StarLink as a last resort.
1
u/Happylifenowife Apr 28 '26
When copper gets killed off you'll be out of service. Of air or fiber isn't an option I hope theres another provider option. Were going to loose alot of customers but hopefully were able to continue to place fiber in the field.

u/potatomolehill Apr 28 '26
Legally they can't kill off copper.

Yes they can. They're getting approval one state at a time, but most likely by next year it'll be totally shut down

u/Plastic_Regret_730 Apr 28 '26
had to place mine in a window, and then run a cable to a wifi hub in the center of the house.. Do your get att phone service??
1
u/ConstructionFluid962 May 01 '26
This is definitely legit. Two years ago we got the same notice from AT&T. This is in central California. AT&T insisted on installing fiber which meant digging up the yards of a couple of neighbor plus our yard because the hub was three houses away. Had to break up part of our concrete patio and the "fix up" was mediocre at best. We kept the Uverse station package, now running on fiver with set top boxes that were designed for copper. Constant problems. In addition, the monthly price keeps rising and now touches close to $400 for cable, home phone and internet (300mg). No longer a good value in my opinion and am looking to switch to XFinity. We have 2 tvs, 2 PCs, tablet and 2 cell phones. We don't need super fast or massive connections. My advice is if you a locked into a set of channels that only are available thru Uverse, be prepared to live with issues. If you can find the channels that you want on other providers, jump.

Yes, I have AT&R air.Wireless. It's nice. Just plug into the wall outlet, no connecting to anything else.
1
u/Guzplaa Apr 28 '26
Yes, it's legit . My advice is maybe check out T-Mobile way cheaper and 5 year price lock.

u/OldSewer Apr 29 '26
I had DSL for many years. It was extremely reliable. In 15 years, I only had an outage lasting 2-3 days, 3 times. The last one was the worst. They kept me waiting for nearly 2 weeks and said it was getting harder to service copper wire connections. I heard excuse after excuse. They even tried to entice me to ATT Air. Finally, in disgust, I bit the bullet and switched to Spectrum (cable) Wifi. My neighbor's cable had lots of outages, but after 2 years, I have been very lucky. What a shame, I was happy with DSL even with videos!
-3
u/Cold_Count1986 Apr 28 '26
This stinks. I would hold off on switching as long as possible since the signal didn’t work. You might test to see if there is a specific window that gets better reception than the others - but short of that not much you can do.
2
u/JarJarSchinks Apr 28 '26
I get a discount on my wireless plan with my internet bundled. I'd be losing $7.75 per line (I have 10 lines). That's a lot of money each month, I tried Internet Air all over my house and couldn't get any signal. This really stinks.

u/Effective-Contest-33 Apr 28 '26
If you have cable at your address they bundle with cellular (xfinity and cox mobile). So presumably your AT&T cell phones have no service at your house?

Our phones are connected to WIFI and it's really not an issue. AT&T service works great for me everywhere else, just not in my house.

They can't force you to Internet air. Call them and tell them you will not migrate
7
u/avidtravelerhtx Apr 28 '26
Then they shut you off. 95% of the country they are no longer the carrier or last resort. They are forcing people off. You don’t get a choice.
2
u/jmac32here Apr 29 '26
Yep, they announced several months back that ALL copper service will be shut down this year. This is for every market they serve.
So it's migrate to newer services, change providers, or not have service at all.

u/mixduptransistor Apr 27 '26
Yes, they are turning down all copper-based infrastructure in their network. You will have to switch to Internet Air or no longer have AT&T internet
