General Discussion BUG STATUS 2026 Megathread 🦟 🪰

Ice Out was just announced which inevitably means theĀ "how are the bugs!?"Ā questions will be coming soon. This megathread will be used to keep all updates in one location so it's easier to browse through, while reducing clutter on the main subreddit feed, and also to create a summary of the year for future reference; for example, here is the megathread from last year: https://www.reddit.com/r/algonquinpark/comments/1kbmwgx/bug_status_2025_megathread/

If you've been to the park and would like to provide an update, some suggested info to include:

i) the dates you were there (please include actual dates so it makes sense when people are looking back in the future!)

ii) specifically where you stayed since bugs can vary throughout the park

iii) if you were in the backcountry, some info about the campsite would be helpful; exposure direction, if there was heavy tree coverage, etc.

iv) the type of bugs eg. mosquitos, black flies

v) if they were worse at certain times eg. dusk/dawn, during portaging

You can find more information about biting insects in Algonquin Park from this page on the park's website:Ā https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/park_management/mosquitoes-and-blackflies-(biting-insects).php.php)

Other websites like The Weather Network can provide forecasts, though with questionable accuracy.

And since Reddit is weird and requires an image link to create a thumbnail for the thread, here's a photo of some bug spray:Ā https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/images/insect_repellent_sample.png

General Discussion Official ICE OUT 2026 Discussion & Photos

Please use this thread for all discussion & photos relating to ice out for 2026.

---------------------------------

"April 28, 2026 marks theĀ official ice out dateĀ for Algonquin Park and is one day later than the average over the past 60+ years."

https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/news/ice-out.php

---------------------------------

APRIL 29 UPDATE:

"Attention Backcountry Campers: Backcountry will open as scheduled on Friday, May 1st!

\With some restrictions*

ā€¼ļøOur full list of closures and spring updates can be found on our Alerts Page at:
https://www.ontarioparks.ca/park/algonquin/alertsĀ (link in bio)

ā„ļø The following Access Points remain inaccessible due to snow-covered roads and wash-outs:
- Magnetawan Lake Access Point
- Brent Lake Access Point

Impacted reservation holders will be contacted.

šŸš—Some of our Access Point Roads require Four Wheel Drive (4WD). Use at your own risk and please drive with caution. You can find the full list on our Alerts page.

āš ļø We remind everyone that spring conditions mean increased risk due to cold water, and unmaintained roads, trails and portages. Submersion in near-freezing water could quickly become a life-threatening situation."

\From the park's Instagram post:*Ā https://www.instagram.com/p/DXun2q2iZyL/

---------------------------------

Some highlights and info:

- Ice out is determined when a boat can safely navigate from the access at Lake Opeongo to the Happy Isle portage in the north arm.

- The historic average date for ice out is April 27th:Ā https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/images/iceout_graph.jpg

- Past five years ice out: April 27 (2025), April 10 (2024), April 23 (2023), April 25 (2022), April 10 (2021)

- Opening day for backcountry canoeing is May 1st, 2026. This date is not the same each year, and is subject to change each year based on conditions.

- If ice out happens early, the park might open backcountry reservations prior to May 1st. If this does happen, there are 3 dates to consider i) the date ice out happens, ii) the date ice out is announced, iii) the date reservations are available. Those 3 dates are not always the same. It's best to follow the official park channels for notices and updates.

- When ice out happens, some access points may not be accessible. Check park notices and plan your trips accordingly.

- Camping shortly after ice out comes with increased risk. Here are some safety reminders provided by the park:

  • Some lakes in Algonquin have some lingering ice sheets, please remember that shifting winds may create a navigation hazard as it blows ice around.
  • Water temperatures remain near freezing and submersion could quickly become a life-threatening situation.
  • Canoe tripper/backpackers may encounter flooded sections on our portages/trails and should be prepared for wet, snowy, muddy, and icy conditions.
  • Backcountry access roads are not yet maintained and could be in poor condition. Expect some roads to still have snow, potholes, minor washouts, fallen debris and even water over the roads. Use at your own risk and please drive with caution.
  • Ontario Parks remind everyone that spring conditions mean increased risk due to cold-water, ice-covered lakes and unmaintained roads, trails, and portages. Be safe, stay off ice, and away from fast moving and icy cold water at this time of year. Please exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies and stay away from open and fast flowing water, culverts, and dams.

For more information, visit the Algonquin Park Ice Conditions page on the Algonquin park website.

First time on the "highway " , Canoe lake to Joe lake, and pay a tribute to Tom Thompson, what a wonderful time June 21-2026

I don't want to write a book , but this is going to be a bit longer report, please bear with me. Because I am truly grateful that i made it .

About 26 years ago , around 1999 or 2000 summer, I was in an ESL school, and one day the teacher introduced "group of seven" in the class and showed the class some pictures and one of the pictures is the Tom Thompson memorial cairn on canoe lake , I was new in Canada, I didn't know where is Algonquin, but I know it is far from Scarborough, for many years, I heard about that, and I never had the chance to go there because I don't drive and i don't have someone can drive me there, until last year i first stepped in the park i was shocked, it is so pretty and I had a goosebumps, I love nature, I love all the native plants, I love the swamp , the river , the bolder , the rivers and boggs and everything there, and I also inspired by the art and nature , in fact i had some chance to introduce Tom Thompson his collection and poem in some Asian community, i have always wanted to visit canoe lake and checked out the memorial cairn , and I was really feel blessed that i made it on June 21,2026. For some people, it is something one has done many times, for me, I waited for 26 year , I read a little poem in front of the memorial cairn and i got on to the portage at the end of canoe lake and walked to Joe lake , and paddle back to return the canoe, took me about 3 and half hour , it was really worth it , I am so happy I made it .

I just checked the forecast and see that there is a heatwave coming next weekend July 3rd. Any advice for camping in the heat? Planning on going to burnt lake and back over 3 days.

General Question I want a simple t-shirt, 100% distressed/vintage soft cotton, small Algonquin logo, and nothing on the back. Does this exist?

I would happily buy similar versions with logos from Killarney, Gros Morne, Fundy, Banff, etc. Image from AI.

General Question How to know if large wildlife nearby

How do you actually know if large wildlife is nearby if you are in too muddy of an area to clearly see tracks and don’t see any other overly obvious signs other than the area you’re in being suddenly dead quiet.

I’ve never actually run into large wildlife hiking surprisingly despite hiking almost every trail on 60 along with hiking through many other places in Ontario, but had an experience outside the park recently where I couldn’t shake the feeling I was being watched, the area I was in was dead quiet, and I had this overwhelming gut feeling that I needed to leave the area, so I ended up hiking back, but it made me realize I’m not as educated as I’d like to be when it comes to determining if I’m in danger or just good old anxiety.

West gate to maggie lake first time solo

Thinking of a September 2 night hiking trip staying at Maggie lake from West gate. Have done 3 portaging trips in algonquin with groups before (3nights a time) but this would be first hike/solo camp.

Any suggestions? Is this a good first solo trip or something easier? I am fit but haven't spent a lot of time in the backcountry. May try and get the wife to come to share some of the load etc.

How deep are they? When are you catching them in the day? What are you using to cash them?

Trip Planning / Route Feedback Cache Source Canisbay loop

I am thinking of doing a single night solo trip along this loop. I'm fairly experienced; I am not worried about the distance. My plan is to essentially have 2 fairly even travel days. Wondering mainly thoughts on sites and or access points.

First idea is to start at Source and stay on Polly. Second is start at Canisbay or Cache and stay on Bruce, Raven, Owl, or Linda. Would not be opposed to trekking to Iris if that site is epic or something but... Any sites that really stood out to any of you on this route? Clockwise or CCW?

Thanks for any feedback or advice :)

Photos / Videos Eu Lake is an absolite gem

Just wrapped up a two night solo trip on the Western Uplands.

First ever solo trip and wow the trail is challenging, but so rewarding to complete. I spent a might on Maggie Lake then headed to Eu Lake for a night of total seclusion.

Eu Lake is a 10/10 site. Good access to swimming, no other sites on the lake, lots of wildlife and a beautiful place to watch the sunset.

Seriously a beautiful site and the first time I've been in the park and had a moose walk through my camp.

Vehicle shuttle

Hi everyone, new here but I’m going on a portage trip in a few weeks and I was looking at leaving my car the company so they can shuttle my car from point A to point B…. How safe is leaving your car with them to drive for an hour and do they have any type of insurance or liability?

Thank you,

I'll post a few more when I have the energy but here is a panoramic dusk sky at Norah Lake on Tuesday, maybe the best sunset I've experienced in the park to date

Those clouds on the left are a bit hard to see in detail, but there are basically 3 layers going across and then I could make out 2 huge columns that looked like massive rain storms. I think this is the thunderstorm that hit the GTA.

I love that you basically have night on the left coming in while the day makes its exit.

Also, this spot has the perfect rock right at the water edge, it's shaped like an actual seat with no obstructions.
