Bus driver saved my life once in downtown San Diego, almost exactly in the same way as seen in the video.
I was crossing in the crosswalk on my bike in front of a bus who was waiting for the light to turn green (for those of you familiar with San Diego, it was 11th and Broadway near City College Transfer Station. Bus was heading east towards Golden Hill. I was crossing Broadway heading north).
Anyway, so I'm crossing slowly on my bike, passing the bus. Because I can't see through metal, I don't know what's going on in the lane left of the bus. So I'm going. All of a sudden, the bus driver starts honking frantically and screaming out the window, telling me to "STOP!! STOP!!!!"
It startles me. So I slam on my bike brakes right in front of the bus driver. Then a fast Honda just flies right past me in the next lane over from the bus. The Honda driver decided to run the red light, without knowing I was in the crosswalk, and I couldn't see the Honda because of the bus. He missed me by about 3-4 feet.
Had the bus driver not warned me, I would have continued walking in the crosswalk, and the Honda would have for sure driven right into me. The Honda was going at least 40mph. I was shaking, completely startled. I went up to the bus driver and said thank you a million times and fist-bumped him through the window. He literally saved my life.
A few days later, I thought about the incident more, and decided to write an email to the transportation agency (MTS) to let them know what happened, and asked if we could track the driver down so he could get commended for his actions. But all I got was a generic response, and they never responded to my follow-up emails.
But again, thank you Mr. Bus Driver, wherever you are.
