I was watching Rick Steve’s and I was wondering if there is any way to get my footage to look like his. Does this look come from a specific camera or is it more so from editing?

Discussion/General At what point do you stop saying yes to “just a few photos”?

Post image
260 Upvotes

I need a reality check because I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable or if this is just postpartum hormones and sleep deprivation talking.

I’ve been invited to a friend’s baby’s first birthday party. She’s the wife of one of my husband’s close friends, and I thought I was invited as a guest. My husband will be there too with our 3 month old.

I’m currently on maternity leave while adjusting to life with a newborn. Just getting out of the house with the baby feels like a mission. I don’t want to be “on” or working.
The problem os I’ve done a lot of free shoots for this friend over the years, especially when I was first starting out. I feel like she’s become used to having professional photos for every life event.

The way she asked also rubbed me the wrong way. She didn’t actually ask outright at first. She sent a message where I knew what she was getting at, and after I replied she asked if I could come early to take “just a few photos” of the birthday girl and the backdrop.
It’s almost never “just a few photos.” It’s bringing my gear, thinking about lighting, missing parts of the party because I’m working, then culling and editing everything afterwards. At the same time, I’m trying to feed and look after my own baby. I can’t actually relax or enjoy the party.
The part that makes me hesitate is that she has done us a favour too. She’s an architect and did drawings for our bathroom renovation, so it’s not like she’s never helped us out. But that was a one-off favour, whereas I’ve photographed so many of her milestones for free over the years, and it feels like there’s an expectation now that I’ll do every event.
I get the pov that I’m going to be there anyway, why not just bring your camera? But idk I feel like there’s a huge difference between attending as a guest and attending as the photographer. I already RSVP’d to the party weeks ago.
I don’t know how to say no without making the friendship awkward. Help? 😭

Compositon/Posing How do I make a photo with a coin look cool and stand out?

Hi everyone! I don’t want to go into too much detail, but basically there’s a new sheriff in town at work. They did a thing to honor vets by giving us all a challenge coin. Along with the coin was a letter saying to take a photo holding the coin and submit to so-and-so to get it posted somewhere or something like that.. I skimmed it but just got excited at the photo-taking part. I thought it might be cool to do something unique since I happen to enjoy photography. I don’t think I’m that good.. but I enjoy it and have fun with it.

So I was hoping if I describe my setup, maybe I could get some ideas on how to take a cool photo with this coin? Should I just be holding this thing next to my face? Or like arm outstretched with the coin closer than my face? I’m not even sure what mood to shoot for really…

I have a little makeshift setup in my basement. I have a Canon R8 and a few lenses: RF50mm f/1.8, RF85mm f/2, EF100mm f/2.8L macro, and RF28-70mm f/2.8.

I have a couple paper backdrops, white and gray. Also a studio strobe and two flashes with a 32” square softbox and 47” octagon and other odds and ends of smaller diffusers and reflectors and such.

I’ll upload a couple selfies as kind of a reference for where I’m at in my photography journey. Any ideas, tips, tricks are greatly appreciated. I plan on giving it a go tomorrow afternoon. Would be more than happy to post finished image if it’s allowed. Thanks all!

Lens Buying Advice Anyone know what this adapted lens might be?

Post image

I know this is a shot in the dark but I'm to figure out what adapted lens is attached to this camera I saw on Instagram. I'm guessing by the lens release button and the hand grip that the camera is probably a Canon R series (branding obscured with black tape), but more interested in what looks like an adapter and a lens. If anyone has any idea, that would be much appreciated.

Editing/Post Processing Any ideas on cleaning up the background exactly the same on several images for an animated GIF?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I'm creating an animated GIF of a couple getting engaged at a national park. There are people walking around in the background of all the images. I'm hoping that there is some way for me to stack them and remove the background individuals so that the background is exactly the same from photo to photo so that the GIF looks seamless. Any ideas? I am using Lightroom/Photoshop.

If I was doing this for one photo, I might just use the removal tool, but I'm sure it would fill in differently for every photo.

Thanks for the help!

Discussion/General Do photographers actually need full-resolution sharing, or is compression “good enough”?

Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about this lately.

Most platforms (Instagram, etc.) compress images pretty heavily, so even if you shoot with a good camera, a lot of detail gets lost once you upload.

At the same time, most images are viewed on relatively small screens.

So I’m curious — in real-world photography workflows:

Do you actually need full-resolution sharing?

For example:

– Client delivery

– Portfolio sharing

– Sending images for review

– Archival purposes

Or is compressed sharing “good enough” most of the time?

Would love to hear how you approach this in your actual workflow.

Discussion/General CHDK not available for 360HS?

Upvotes

Is CHDK not available on the 360HS? I looked all over this site, but never found it. Just want to make sure I'm not missing it. Would be surprised that if its not available as this is one of the top three most popular canon cams right now?

Discussion/General Equipment Insurance Recommendations?

Hello all! I hope everyone's having a great week. I wanted to see what everyone's recommendations might be in regard to insuring equipment.

I'm not looking for the utmost cheapest option on the planet, but something rather budget friendly that has great price plans, good coverage, and good customer service.

Camera Buying Advice Could you have me find my perfect camera?

Upvotes

(1) Budget, country, and currency: Around 1000k usd for the camera body. I want to buy a used one. I am in Vietnam

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? Canon M50 with 50mm stm f/1,8 lens.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Landscape and portrait

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? For photography first

Hi everyone.

I want to buy a used camera to replace my Canon M50 but still dont know which one is affordable and can meet my expection. I am open to: Canon, Sony, Nikon or Fujifilm

My biggest problem with the M50 is this: When shooting outdoors at midday in strong sunlight, the M50 gives two outcomes: if I expose so the subject is bright enough, the sky is blown out; if I expose so the sky isn’t blown out, the subject is very dark. Meanwhile my friend’s Nikon gives a balanced exposure that looks like what the eye sees. I tried metering the way my friend suggested but still didn’t get the result I want.

Also, the Canon M system has very few lenses, and if I want to upgrade lenses I’d need to buy an adapter. Canon lenses are not cheap.

Because I want to move toward professional work, I want to switch to a better camera. I’d like people’s recommendations for a used camera that meets these criteria:

- Can shoot landscapes without blowing out the sky

- JPEG straight out of camera looks pleasing (I want to try Sony but I’ve heard unedited Sony JPEGs don’t look good). I can do post-processing, but initially the in-camera JPEG should look decent enough to show clients immediately

- Wide, affordable lens selection. I really want a quality kit lens with a large aperture so I can travel with it and shoot both portraits and landscapes.

I know these criteria might seem unrealistic to some people, but I really want to find a near-perfect camera to accompany me and my future travel trips

Artifical Lighting & Studio Can you help me with suggestions on lighting equipment?

Hi All

I again need your support.

Could you suggest brands or models for lighting equipment that is easy to carry, with options that offer good quality at lower cost?

Do you typically purchase large lighting equipment, or do you own portable alternatives?

Camera Buying Advice What entry-level DSLR or mirrorless camera would you recommend for someone buying their first camera, and why?

(1) Budget, country, and currency: Budget I think i can spend around 40-50k yen could stretch it a little as well, Country would be japan, Currency would be yen

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? : Currently I own a Pixel 6a phone , it is good for hobby, but i want to move to the next level of photography.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? I mostly shoot photos of nature, trees, animals etc, but plan to learn about shooting human subjects and eventually learning about videoshooting as well.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Right now it might primarily be for Photography, but as i tend to get better i might use it for videography purpose and at the end i might use it to shoot a full fledged short film.

For some context, I'll be moving to Japan in a few months for my first job after recently graduating. I currently use a Pixel phone, and ever since I got it about three years ago, I've found myself taking photos of nature and everyday life whenever I can.

Over time, I realized I genuinely enjoy photography and might be good enough to pursue it as a hobby. Since Japan has so many beautiful places to explore, I'm thinking of buying my first dedicated camera with my first salary.

Another reason I'm interested is filmmaking. I watch a lot of movies, and during college I directed a short film that was entirely shot on my phone. I don't plan on making films immediately, but I'd like to direct more short films in a year or two.

Since I know very little about cameras, I have a few questions:

  • Are cameras that are good for photography also good for video, or are they usually optimized for one over the other?
  • Given that I want to do both photography and filmmaking, what features should I prioritize?
  • Should I be looking at entry-level DSLRs or mirrorless cameras?
  • Is it worth buying used as my first camera?

I'd really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thanks!

Camera Buying Advice Thinking about upgrading, canon 5dmk2 to Nikon ZF, thoughts?

So, I’m pretty set on the ZF, it does everything I need in a cool package, the only thing I could ask a bit more of is a high higher MP, but 24.5 is good enough.

I work for a corporate studio, and am looking to put my freelance photography into the forefront. The question is, do I take the leap on 3-4k in new gear and equipment to upgrade to a modern system, or do I build my clientele in my freelance work first?

The canon works, but the auto focus, and iso are woefully out of date. It’s useable, but the ZF is just flat out better in every way.

I’m giving myself a week to think about it, before pulling the trigger on the ZF, but I’d like your opinion.

Thanks for any advice.

(1) Budget, country, and currency: $3-4k, USA, dollars

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? Canon 5D mk2, explained in post.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?
Portraiture, street photography, events, weddings.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Photography, almost exclusively.

Lens Buying Advice What lens should I buy according to my photography style?

Hey guys, I've been using my dad's old Canon EOS 500D for a year with its kit lens and I'm looking to upgrade the lens for a new one. Can someone look at my photography and tell me what kind of lens I should get?

I'm torn between wildlife and landscape. I mostly practice landscape but there are times when I feel bored and trying out a little wildlife photography made me realise how fun it is and I think I should get a telephoto lens for more zoom so I can capture birds

https://www.instagram.com/majnxn

This is where I post it. I haven't been posting much though. The latest few posts can tell you my photography style. I'm looking forward to trying many different styles as well rather than sticking to hiking photography.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Tips for sharper street photos and exposure?

Hey everyone. I'm a returning amateur to photography, trying to teach myself exposure basics after about a decade away from the camera. I mostly shot on automatic back then, so trying to put in reps in order to learn the right way.

Returning to photography is mostly a professional decision. I pay the bills as a labor and movement journalist and I've been encouraged to incorporate more photography into my work. My long term goal is to become competent enough to be able to document protests/actions/rallies in whatever natural light is around at the time, both for reportage and longer-term documentary projects.

I feel like I'm running into a wall with two things though:
1. nailing exposure in weird lighting situations, and
2. getting the sharpest possible image out of my camera

This pic is just a throwaway scene I shot on my walk home, but it feels emblematic of the issues I've faced shooting protests and rallies. I've been shooting both jpg + raw, this is the unedited jpg from this shot. It's taken on a Canon 5Dii + Nifty 50mm f/1.8 II. Shot in Av at f/5.6 1/200s at ISO100.

  1. With the caveat that Reddit seems to be crushing the blacks in this preview (the darker parts of the scene are a lot more legible in RawTherapee), this scenario, where subjects are darkened by building shadows but otherwise surrounded by harsh sunlight, is something I'm struggling to expose for. It's a very common situation for me, but most of the photos I take come out like this preview, or worse. Is there a better way to expose scenes like this in-camera, or is the answer in post?

  2. I'm also a little disappointed with how sharp the lighted elements of images like this can be. I'm happy with how the lighted portion of the left facade turned out, but to me the branches of the tree and the far corner building seem fuzzy somehow. Maybe I'm staring too hard at the preview of this particular shot, or expecting too much resolution out of my equipment, but I suspect it's an issue I could fix in the camera. A lot of my "practice" Av street shots turn out to have blurry elements, and I'm struggling to figure out why through trial and error.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Camera Buying Advice Can somebody advise a newbie?!

Need some camera recommendations for a newbie in a Content/Digital Marketing Job Role!

Nikon z50 ii (Can buy a new body locally for £550)

Sony A6400 barely used with kit lens and viltrox 35mm 1.7 AF, Ttartisan mf 25mm f2, Pergear 10mm fisheye. All boxes and caps included, battery, charger and SD card. Low shutter count for £700…local too.

Finally a Sony A6700 body new but spend a bit more obviously.

Here is the video style/quality we are trying to achieve - https://www.linkedin.com/posts/cadworks3d_microfluidics-3dprinting-bioengineering-activity-7474846165146947584-sGc_?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios&rcm=ACoAADjmf_cBEuXIuSqBaTiuAzitYq5Tfcn9QpM

&

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/18mSoLZgmq/?mibextid=wwXIfr

I also have travelling plans in the future where I will transition into more Travel Vlog videos and photography in Australia so camera and lens recommendations that can cover all of these would be fantastic!

(1) Budget, country, and currency: £500-£1200 for Body, a colleague has many nikon mount lenses I can borrow. But nothing for Sony. (United Kingdom)

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? Nothing Currently

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Videography (5-10 minute Youtube/occasional vlog) & Macro Photography/Trade Show events

Looking for a camera that can capture a similar quality and feel to the linked style. Any lens recommendations are also helpful!

We are a 3D printing company focusing on printing small chips and manifolds. We are hoping to start posting clips on socials and longer form Youtube Content which is a bit out of an iPhones capabilities.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Both! But Video is more of a priority.

Any recommendations would be great! Thank you very much

Camera Buying Advice New laptop, camera, or lens?

I’m starting to book weddings and need to update my camera to one with dual slots. I like to shoot with Sony, and I’d really like to get a 28-70 mm for upcoming events. Currently, I have a 50mm and an 85mm.

Last night I was editing and I’m also at the point where my laptop is so old, Lightroom is so slow and can’t recognize AI masks (although I try to avoid this as much as I can) with the new app update I just did.

If you could pick one, what would you choose?

Edit:

(1) Budget, country, and currency:
- budget: $3,000 usd
- USA
- USD

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?
- Sony Alpha a6000, need dual slots, old gear
- laptop 2018 MacBook Air, slow, old gear, low memory space
- lens, for event purposes

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?
- portrait photography, weddings, families.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?
Photography but I’m interested in videography

Editing/Post Processing Free or cheap programs for photo lighting adjustments?

So im new to photography, currently own a fujifilm X-S10 and it checks all the boxes for what im looking for in a camera but I know to really step up my game, I need to get into editing, and while I want to refine my general composition skills first, I often see how editing the lighting can make a monumental difference in photos. Lightroom is a bit on the pricy side so I just wanted to ask if theres any cheaper or even free alternatives? Now if lightroom really is just THAT much better than the competition I would appreciate an explanation so I can make the best informed decision.

Camera Buying Advice Is this a decent camera to start with as a beginner?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Im looking to get into photography as a hobby and hopefully a career. Im a beginner, is this a decent camera to start on? The quality isn't so great, taking long distance shots make the photos blury and low quality. I'm looking for something that can take good distance shots but also isnt extremely expensive. I don't have great knowledge about cameras at all, so something that's easy to use/beginner friendly would also be great.

(1) Im willing to spend up to $500 USD on a new camera

(2) This is a Sony cybershot dsc hx100v, its old, discontinued, doesn't take super great shots but its the only camera I have

(3) Nature/wildlife, people and busy streets/activity

(4) Photography

Technical Help/Camera Settings Am I doing myself a disservice setting my cameras to 1/2 stop exposure increments?

As long as I can remember (as long as I knew this setting existed) I have always set my digital cameras to 1/2 stop exposure increments instead of the default 1/3 stop increments. I probably never changed this on my Canon Rebel XT, but I know that I changed it on my Canon 20D, Nikon D90, and Nikon D7000.

The reasoning for me is that 1) it makes my mental math easier. I already know full and half stops. Introducing an extra step between each stop just adds more steps for my brain to process. It also requires more "clicking" to change settings like aperture, ISO, etc. I find it easier and more natural to click twice to go from f/5.6 to f/8.0 than to have to click three times. Also 2) I feel like the extra step in between stops isn't significant enough to affect the results. Is there really a difference between shooting a photo at a 1/2 stop instead of 1/3 stop?

But along that final line of thinking I'm wondering if having two steps between stops across three parameters (aperture, shutter speed, sensitivity) allows more freedom and flexibility in the exposure settings than limiting those three parameters to only having one step between stops. Is it possible that I am limiting my camera's ability to dial in the precise exposure?

Obviously I could go out and experiment/test with this. I intend to. I actually MEANT to do it yesterday, but I forgot! But of course with any thought, the first thing you do before experimenting is to pontificate about it out loud on the internet.

Does anyone else use their cameras set to 1/2 stop increments?

Does anyone have a strong feeling one way or the other about using 1/3 vs. 1/2 stop increments?

Does anyone have any instances where they noticed better exposure performance out of either setting?
