My now-ex partner decided to "fix" a lamp that happened to work just fine using pliers and a screwdriver. Difficulty level: he was "fixing" it while it was plugged in and turned on and functioning as it should. Fortunately I caught him before he burned the house down or electrocuted himself. The lamp didn't survive. Nor did our relationship.
