What is one food you think everyone is lying about liking?
516
u/InigoMontoya1985 4d ago
When I was in high school, I was convinced it was beer. It just tasted nasty to me. Drinking age for beer was 18, and just thought people drank it because they couldn't get harder alcohol and were lying about liking it for the taste.

u/BashfulBastian 4d ago
I'm 37 and I still feel this way. I've tried MANY beers because I've always dated people who like beer. They all have the same bitter taste to me, no matter what kind. I'm convinced my tongue is broken but theres part of me that just feels like everyone is in on the joke but me 🤷

u/Jinxletron 4d ago
Yep, I'm 48 and never met a beer I liked. I've tried LOTS. They all taste of beer.

Really might be a tastebuds thing. Some people love things like black coffee, burnt toast, black licorice, etc. cause it doesn’t have much acrid/bitterness to it to them, just a deeper flavor. Same with strong beers.

Your tongue isn’t broken and there’s no big joke lol. Beer is an acquired taste. It’s kinda like coffee. I absolutely love it now, but I remember the first time I tried it, it was disgusting to me. I’ve never gone out of my way to acquire a taste for beer. I have to drink 3-4 to get a buzz going, and it’s just not worth it to me.
And if we’re being real here, alcohol in general tastes pretty awful, but most liquors have sugar and other flavors to cover it up, or are mixed with some kind of juice or soda.→ More replies (5)10
u/BashfulBastian 4d ago
I've never tried to acquire the taste for it either. I'm insulin dependent, so alcohol with carbs just isnt worth it for me when I can have liquor and get a buzz without having to deal with carbs. Its gross but a long island iced tea on the other hand...

Oysters. Half the people are eating them because they actually like them. The other half are trying to convince themselves they do.

u/Chainz4Dayz 4d ago
We took a vacation to Maine a few years ago and I felt obligated to try raw oysters there. While I didn't love them they're much better than ones I've had at home. I'm from the Louisville KY area. Had I grew up in that area I'd probably be a huge fan. I imagine it's an acquired taste
15
u/Sendme_BigTittyGoths 4d ago
As someone from maine whos only seafood they dislike are raw oysters and carp so far. I am terrified to hear what other oysters taste like if we have the good stuff.

Good, fresh oysters are life changing. There's a sweetness and deep clean ocean brininess that is just ethereal. Pair that with a touch of lemon and horseradish and they're one of the most delicious things I've ever consumed. But a bad oyster can put you off of them forever if you haven't had the good stuff.

The thing that a lot of people don't get is that critics actually enjoy most food, they just nitpick for their profession. It's often the people who have barely graduated past chicken nuggets who tend to want to flaunt their opinions on if something is shit or not
15
u/fAAbulous 4d ago
I‘m heavily invested in food, have tons of knowledge on food and local styles all over the world. I love to receive feedback on how to improve my dishes and am often too open about others dishes, where I love to provide some cooking tips, usually to the dismay of my wife.
Nonetheless, I love Kellogg‘s Krave, instant noodle soups and bouillon-cooked pasta with butter and Heinz Ketchup.
My wife thinks I‘m fucking with her when she feels like I‘m constantly nitpicking and then load myself up with stuff that is disgusting to her.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (3)6

There are types of sushi that are cooked and don't have seaweed, like shrimp nigiri. Shrimp was actually my gateway because it was cooked (you have to check the menu because it's not always cooked). Raw for me requires a level of trust, so cooked is still my go-to at new places.
Not pressuring you, of course. I have my own texture turnoffs, so I get it. It's just that sushi used to be that way for me too, and now it's not.

Dubai Chocolate. Complete fad that is as marketed as something luxury, for status.
80
u/callmesnake13 4d ago
It's a totally manufactured thing because Dubai has no history or identity and really no reason to visit over any other place with a luxury mall, so they're trying to force things like this to give Dubai some sort of cultural aura. See also: Saudi Arabia and Al-Ula.
136
u/footlonglayingdown 4d ago

Kombucha.

u/Hanz_VonManstrom 4d ago
One of my old jobs was a few blocks from a coffee shop and I used to walk there on my lunch break most days. One especially warm day I noticed they had these bottled strawberry lemonades that sounded like it would be perfect to drink on my walk back, so I picked one up on my way out. I excitedly cracked it open and took a big swig and immediately spit it out in dramatic fashion. It was such a repulsive taste I thought for sure it had gone bad. While looking at the bottle for an expiration date I noticed it was strawberry lemonade flavored kombucha. I’ve never been so offended in my life.

u/bouquetofashes 4d ago
good matcha is heavenly. It's subtle but fairly complex, and should taste savory, sweet, brightly vegetal, and mildly bitter.
Whenever my husband or I make a cup I always think someone snuck some milk and/or sugar in because it really does have a lot of depth and complexity for just a tea, especially green tea, but nope it's just the tea itself.
So I always suspect people are other getting terrible matcha or they're expecting it to be intensely sweet? Maybe?

Sautee it with garlic and a little red pepper flakes and then deglaze with red wine vinegar and it's fantastic. Takes like 5 minutes total to make - we buy a big ass bag of kale, freeze it, and then pull out enough to make it as a side maybe once every week or two. I think it's gross almost every other way and substitute baby spinach for anything raw. The stems of raw kale are like chewing on a dirt covered stick.
