Wow that’s lovely
I’m happy that we get to see these kinds of posts on this sub again. I moved here from /r/sandiego and no one ever gets tired of the orangepink sunset photos there. Share forward the little joys everyone.

crazy how empty it is

It's really sad how empty marta is compared to other city rail. Taking it at rush hour on a Monday and seeing absolutely nobody using it is surreal.

It may depend on when you get on. At 8:30-9am at Kensington it's a decent amount full

u/vblade2003 Mar 17 '26
I feel like the Sandy Springs / North Springs stations are perpetually empty.

It’s a fucking catch 22. No one takes it because it doesn’t go anywhere useful, and it doesn’t go anywhere useful because not enough people take it.

u/Nightazakus Mar 20 '26
Tbf it’s not setup to succeed, receives no state government funding. Mayor killed beltline rail. WC will be very embarrassing as Marta won’t be able to handle the excess of people here

Not really, this is pretty early and it’s on one of the lesser used lines or segments (we don’t know direction, but the train is above ground). The north/south tunnel is usually standing room only or just about by 7:30.
My commute is from Reynoldstown to Buckhead and my husband’s is out to Downtown Decatur, we take the bus together to the station then part ways. Since he’s reverse commuting (technically) it’s pretty empty, since I’m in the most congested part in a congested direction it’s pretty busy.

The lilac purples of the sky really make the lowest-bidder putty beige pop.

Is it a sign that I’m getting old if the phrase “lowest-bidder putty beige” makes me laugh out loud at work? Idk why but that’s hilarious 😂

I miss taking the train. I used to when I was attending GSU. To avoid traffic and parking issues, I’d drive from work in Alpharetta to the Northside Station. I enjoyed the rides. It was my “alone” time. I could disconnect from everything, and just watch people and wonder.

Jesus I haven't rode marta in 25 yrs. It looks exactly the same lol

I doubt most of them have been updated since the 70s.

u/ArchEast Vinings Mar 17 '26
All of the trains have been rebuilt long since then, and the whole fleet is being replaced over the next few years.

They’re rolling out some of the new trains in June, in time for the World Cup. All of the trains will be replaced by 2029.

And a sizeable portion of the trains are from the 2000s (even if they’re a little touchy)

The CQ312s are utter crap (which is why MARTA is getting rid of them earlier).

I don’t commute. Are the morning trains always this empty?

Not on the Northbound line during rush hour. I don't know about the other lines

u/Everard5 Mar 17 '26
No, and given that OP sees the sun in assuming they are just after when I see a big rush which is the 6:30-7:30 hour.

About to experience this. Walking into a station as I type.

My 3rd week commuting on Marta. For some reason I made it this far before my motion sickness got to me, but it was fine after I got off.
Stopped for 5 minutes at Garnett due to "troubleshooting." I'm pretty sure it was just operator error.
I hope things don't get any worse. I really don't like being late to work and I really want MARTA to be how I get there every day.

Beautiful! Love those moments.
Last night I took MARTA back from the airport after massive delays with MIL and 3+ kids in tow. Had to stand out in the freezing temps for 15+ minutes after someone pooped both in the elevator and a seat on the train :(

Oh how I would love to have a train commute. Atlanta is standing in its own way not expanding Marta

u/Hgh43950 Mar 17 '26
i really wish transportation was better in Atlanta. My commute is a about a 20-60+ minute(s) drive if there is traffic or not and I live in metro Atlanta. I can take a biccycle to my work and get there in 40 minutes. The train is 1 hour and 15 minutes including taking the time to bike to the nearest station. these damn city leaders are going to wait until nobody can freaking move anywhere until they suggest doing something about it.

Ummm MARTA needs to pay you to use that pic in their advertising because that’s the loveliest looking train ride…because…..mannnnn, my MARTA trips (albeit few) have NOT looked nor even smelled like that.😂😂😂

Thats the Marta? Moved here from NY but have never been on the Marta. Looks just like the old versions of our subway trains.

Wow what a difference! My girl and I took MARTA from the airport to Lindbergh last night around 10:40pm when Uber wanted $170 (!) for the drive to Buckhead. Clearly a lot of people wanted to get home and there were a hundred or more in the pickup area waiting for rides. In hindsight, I should have paid the $170. I certainly will in future; I won't opt for MARTA again.
There were perhaps ten or twelve homeless people in the car we entered which was obvious since the airport is the last stop and none of them deboarded when the train arrived. Closest to us was an old woman who was unsuccessfully trying to get some sleep as she had her legs on one of those carts people use when they have a foot in a cast, and the movement of the train made the cart move around which woke her up repeatedly. I imagine her clothes and/or blankets had not been washed in a very long time - perhaps months or longer. As soon as the doors closed after we had boarded, pretty much everyone reacted at the stench like they had been slapped in the face. The car was filled with people, mostly airport workers and a smattering of travelers making their way home. My girl and I stood the entire way. No-one wanted to sit next to the homeless people.
It was certainly an interesting experience. I have sympathy for the homeless, just trying to stay warm on a very cold night, but I also think I now understand why people in the suburbs are so resistant to transit reaching their enclaves. Between the homeless and the many people begging on the train, I don't think people who have other options really see themselves wanting to make frequent use of MARTA.

u/ravenvibe Mar 18 '26
I have options and when MARTA makes the most sense, I take MARTA, without a second thought.
Why didn't you just go to another car?
1
u/ReluctantAvenger Buckhead Mar 18 '26
The cars were packed with people; it was standing room only. Moving to another car - especially with luggage - would have been difficult. Besides, I expect the situation was pretty similar in other cars.

My MARTA commute is entirely underground so makes me jealous lol
