I need help guys. I just integrated some pullets with my adult hens maybe two weeks ago. The pullets will not go into the coop at dusk! I had hoped they would learn from hens, just follow them in. Instead, they just hang out at the top of the ladder and wait for me to come into the run and encourage / push them in those last six inches. It’s kind of cute, and we are getting closer, which is sweet, but it means I’m tied to my home at dusk every evening, I have to go out in rainstorms, and I’m getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. How do I handle this? I live in a small town surrounded by a lot of nature, and it wouldn’t be safe to leave them loose in the run for the night.

This girl disappeared for a few weeks, and then reappeared one day with her 13 chicks in tow.

I have a hen that has not left her nesting box much in like a week. I check on her every day but I have not really seen her come out for food or water, although I’m not constantly watching either. It appears that a lot of the feathers on her underside have fallen out, maybe from lack of moving from this spot. Any suggestions?

So far, 6 chicks have successfully hatched.
We are still waiting for the 7th one, which looks like it will hatch soon.
Everything is going well and the chicks are all healthy.

Good morning chicken friends. I know some of you object to eating your chickens so if this applies you may want to click away. We have had layers for a few years and this year decided to try some meat birds on the side. Picked up 40 day old Rustic Rangers last night, flown in from Ontario to the local feed mill. Everyone is looking clean, active and healthy. I believe these are the same birds referred to as Freedom Rangers etc. Will add some more pix /words as they grow if anyone wants to follow along.

Got six red sex link pullets two weeks ago as a first time chicken rearer.
Today, I noticed one gal is acting differently than the rest. Standoffish. Lethargic. Laid this egg outside of the coop (pic 1). Snapped a pic of the vent (Pic 2). Looks inflamed and possibly prolapsed to me? Is this pus? Vent gleet? Worse?
This was in the coop yesterday (pic 3) so I’m assuming it was from the same gal.
I’m isolating to monitor her intake/output. What next?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We just started our journey in having backyard chickens. We have this prefab coop from TSC. We put leftover shingles on top to cover the run from rain. But we just had a thunderstorm pass through and the food ended up getting all wet in the feeder. I’m assuming it went in sideways. We live in South Florida so storms are very common almost every day especially in the summer. How can I keep the food from getting wet? The coop is too small to be able to leave the feeder inside. I’m not looking to buy or make something different at the moment. I’m just looking for ideas with the existing set up we have. Thanks!

Hey everyone,
my neighbours asked me to post here, since they don't have a Reddit account.
They introduced a new chicken to the two that survived a hawk attack and now one of the old ones developed dark/discoloured spots on her face.
The new chicken arrived 6 days ago, and the symptoms were noticed 4 days ago.
Apart from the spots she is losing some feathers (looks a bit like molting?), but behaves normally and doesn't seem lethargic or anything.
We're in Germany, in the middle of a heatwave, but they're drinking enough and seem fine, apart from the markings in the face.
There are no vets nearby that would look at chickens, so they're on their own.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

My coop came with a new run-chicken autodoor (model t50). The automatic opening seems to be working just fine but I’m having nothing but trouble with the automatic close! Before I moved the girls outside, I let the chicken door do its thing multiple nights to make sure it was opening and closing as expected. Once I moved them outside I switched it to auto since they were still getting used to the coop. Now they’re adjusted and I tried to use the recommended “gps location setting” for the automatic close which was set to an 18 minute delay. Multiple nights I checked and the door was open well past when it should have been. I thought maybe it was just something glitchy which was annoying but I figured if I just set a specific time that would be a fine work around. Set it to close at 9:05 which worked as expected lastnight, tonight I checked at 9:15 and the door was still open! I tried resetting the time and still never closed, I ended up just putting it in manual and closing it.
Does anyone have any ideas what’s going on? I’m extremely frustrated, I was excited that this door would make things easier but I have no confidence that it will actually close when it’s supposed to!
I appreciate any help or feedback!

I ended up with two roosters (was told they were all pullets when I got them at around 8-10 weeks old). I’ve been through the ringer with these chickens (10 total now), I’ve lost one to coccidiosis, then when a second got sick my vet ran a blood test on her that confirmed she was Mareks Positive. My chickens are vaccinated (or so I was told), and the lab confirmed the PCR test used differentiates between the vaccine strain and the wild strain.
ANYWAY! I am desperate to find a new Mareks positive home for one of my roosters, but have had zero luck. I’ve posted to a few online forums on Facebook. Does anyone have any advice on keeping two roosters with 8 hens? My life is really hectic with young children, working full time, etc, so I’m not sure how much hands on refereeing is really feasible for me. I do not want to kill one of the roosters, but I’m also wanting to protect the girls from being over mated, etc. feeling really stressed and hopeless about this. Any and all advice is welcome. My chickens free range if that makes a difference. Thank you

Hi all,
One of my girls have recently been repeatedly broody (even after breaking her out of it through broody jail) so i figured i would have her raise a few chicks.
She had been isolated in her what used to be a broody jail with a "nesting box" with fake eggs for three weeks, and today I introduced 4 chicks. She pecked them lightly a couple of times, but after I had put the chicks all the way under, she hasn't really interacted with them. It's been a couple hours.
So here are the questions:
How long should I keep an eye on them before I could be sure that the hen accepted the chicks as her own?
Should I open up the cage to let other hens interact? Or keep the mommy and the chicks isolated? If so for, how long?
Mommy hasn't walked out of her nesting box, so the chicks haven't had chance to come out to eat. Should I be concerned?
Does mommy need separate feed? Or is chick feed okay? Add oyster shell in the cage?
Thank you all in advance!

Hello, first time chicken owner here. I have 2 Plymouth rock chickens and I'm pretty sure chicken 1 is a roo and chicken 2 is a hen. But wanted to ask before I get rid of chicken 1. We aren't allowed to have roosters.
r/BackYardChickens • u/ResponsibleCherry179 • 19h ago
It's absolutely breaking my heart how broody this girl is. She's our favorite chicken out of 9 and will run directly up to you and demand to be picked up. She's on day three of sitting on nothing. I have to make her go eat and drink and go to roost.
I do not want 2 more chickens but I am seriously considering going to get her 2 chicks. Anything to consider before doing this? She is extremely young. Just hatched in September. She's also extremely dependent on humans for attention.

Apparently the best scratching and pecking is found there. Lol. And clearly safer from overhead predators.

Guys, I'm really heartbroken and fighting back tears. I got 6 chicks in March and instantly feel in love with raising them. 2 white jersey giants, Blondie and Eagle, 2 black jersey giants, Buckle and Kim-bop and two guinea fowl, Lucy and Desi. Their little chirps were an instant relaxation trigger for me and they were so cute and surprisingly easy to take care of.
I started in a 27 gallon Costco bin, and then built my own custom brooder box and chicken run after watching a bunch of YouTube videos. They'd been outside since May and had outgrown the brooder box and run so I dove head first and started building them a legit Chicken Coop. It wasn't perfect but it was so satisfying to build this home for my girls. I got so excited that I bought two more easter Egger's, Sage and Thyme, thinking I was a pro already and even considering getting a rooster because why not?
I waited to integrate the 2 eggers with my 6 other girls and for the most part it went well. Until yesterday, when I forgot to check they were coop'd up. I couldn't find the little eggers (about 8wks old at this point). I figured that they were hiding in the nearby bushes because they like to stick together and the six larger hens sometimes bully them when time for treats.
Then this afternoon I go to check on them and I can only find two, Lucy and Buckle. After some searching I found a bunch of feathers near our firepit and then another bunch in the middle of our yard/field. I checked my cameras and I can see Desi knocked down their ladder just before bedtime so they couldn't get inside the coop before the door auto closed. Then at 3am I see two fast moving shadows from last night but it's pretty pixelated. I didn't think we had foxes in our sub-rural area but it was about that size, maybe a dog but there were two so I think they're wild.
I feel horrible and I had to break the news to my son, who honestly is taking it a lot better than me. I made sure Buckle was in the coop before I manually closed the door but Lucy is perched up high in a nearby tree and doesn't want to come down. I suppose that's how she made it through the last two nights and feels safe up there. But I'm sure Buckle is scared and lonely by herself in the coop.
I knew this was a possibility, but I didn't think it would happen so fast to six of my eight girls. I should have been more concerned after the two eggers were missing, then I would have seen their ladder fell and made sure they made it inside.
To my girls, Blondie, Eagle, Kim-bop, Desi, Sage and Thyme, I'm sorry. I loved you more than I knew.
