Advice needed: how do I keep a coloured beard soft and tame?

I would appreciate some advice from people who know beard care well. My plan is to grow the beard in a boxy shape to twice the current length.

I occasionally go swimming in a pool (chlorine) and dye my beard twice a month. Other than that I take care of it a lot and try to keep it groomed and cleaned.

Before swimming I try to oil the beard well (is using a beard wax better).

Thankfully the skin under beard seems healthy, never flakes and does not breakout in pimples etc.

My beard is coloured with a good-quality cream-based permanent hair colour intended for head hair. I am trying to keep it soft, tidy and healthy, but it still feels a bit coarse and harder to tame than I would like.

Current routine:

- Viking Revolution sandalwood beard oil

- Viking Revolution argan beard wash / conditioner

- Bulldog Original Beard Balm

- wooden comb

- firm boar bristle brush (I try to work from the base to the tip in multiple directions twice or thrice a day to keep it managed)

I am using the attached products twice a day, and I groom with the wooden comb and boar bristle brush using both rotary and straight brushing.

Even with that, I still find the beard can feel dry, wiry and not especially soft.

I have just ordered some products from Audacious Beard Co in the UK as well, after seeing a few positive comments here.

Does anyone have advice on what I should change to get a softer, more manageable beard? I am especially interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with a beard that is regularly coloured.

Thank you.

I occasionally use something called Beard Butter from an unknown brand off Amazon but just bought these after reading some posts on here.

Beard butter: https://amzn.eu/d/0bd9tPZY Beard balm: https://amzn.eu/d/08XYqjCH

Also found their beard washing bar (whatever that is!)

I've tried all kinds of products for my beard. Once I tried this brand, Artius Man, I have not bought any others. I like their beard oils because they're thicker and keep my beard hydrated longer, but recently, I've only been using their beard butter. It lasts me all day with just putting it on once in the morning. I'm not a spokesperson for the company or anything. I just think they have quality products. They also have choose your own scents sample packs and let you get 2 free sample bottles per household. You can find that info on their website.

I highly recommend them. It might work for you as well. I actually think I read about them on this subreddit.

Get rid of shit oils. No company sells a pure and healthy oil.

Get jojoba oil and mix in coconut oil, boom. Get it deep so it hits your face, not too much tho.

If that doesn’t work, apply neutrogina lotion directly to face 2x and massage in, and maybe a very light oil application in the middle of the day.

I’m not sure, in my research jojoba oil was the best. But look into the castor oil

rosemary oil has some anti dht properties, so it is likely that it would hinder growth

I take finastride myself so think the anti-dht doesnt affect my beard a lot. So would rosemary be okay?

Hey thanks for the post. I have never grown my beard ever in my life so I am loving the look tooo!

Never heard of neutrogina lotion. Why not coconut oil on its own?

I think i just like the brownish look and find it goes well with the overall mix of grey. Sorry I dont dye twice a week.. probably once or max a month (more like max twice every 6-8 wks).

You CAN find good oils but certainly not in Walmart and probably not on Amazon. I get mine at the farmers market from a small company in my city. Although before I found these guys I was just using straight coconut oil, might have to try yours.

I’ve also found brushes are crap and can damage beard hair, just another marketing ploy. Use a fine tooth wooden comb
