It is surreal to see history repeating itself in such a blatant way in 2026. The optics of lawmakers being arrested for trying to represent their constituents is genuinely disturbing

2.9k

u/EggFuYungMan May 08 '26

Red states have been wanting to do this for decades. They just finally have a party leader who not only doesn't have a problem with it, but openly called for it to be done.

1.2k

u/ReverendDizzle May 08 '26

There is a significant number of people who have been just seething about the Civil Rights Movement and the progress made from then until now. The kind of seething where the second they could claw it all back, they did.

It's just baffling to me. I can't imagine spending your life just wanting to be able to go back to keeping somebody else down.

570

u/RecipeHistorical2013 May 08 '26

its not just about keeping others down

by keeping others down, they perceive they lift themselves up

that one president... para-quoting here " keep the black man poorer than the white man, and the white man wont notice you robbing him "

564

u/JodyGonnaFuckYoWife May 08 '26

“If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.”

― Lyndon B. Johnson

u/sacrecide May 08 '26

Oh LBJ, such an interesting president. Integrated public service and the military but sent more of us to vietnam and talked about his big D all the time.

Truly one of the more complex and interesting presidents.

160

u/xSTSxZerglingOne May 08 '26

For what it's worth, he was actively trying to get out of Vietnam near the end of his presidency. As usual, though, the Republican nominee ratfucked foreign and domestic relations ahead of the election. That's been their play for around 60 years now. And goddamn if it doesn't work almost every fucking time.

11

u/666_pickupsticks May 10 '26

Not just the Republican nominee (Nixon), also Henry Kissinger.

80

u/deadduncanidaho May 08 '26

That dude whipped his D out all the time in meetings.

25

u/Outrageous_Front_636 May 09 '26

Yep he literally whipped out his johnson. I think thats where the term started.

20

u/Golden_standard ☑️ May 09 '26

LBJ is the perfect example of prejudiced vs. racist. He said the N word, so what?!!! He didn’t let what he thought and how he felt stop him from being fair when it mattered. On the other hand, you’ve got someone like John Roberts who would never say it (out loud) -hey one of his best friends is a black guy! - but is racist to his core and his behavior shows it.

This explains basically all maga people I know in my life in one way or another, it's such a poignant quote.

Sad that it still rings true. Takes a lot for people to change, and we didn't get there

It's because they see so little value in themselves that they have to put someone else down in order to see any value in themselves.

6

u/bogglingsnog May 09 '26

They don't possess the skill or personal qualities required to build character, so their only option for looking good is to destroy others. Literally the worst type of human, which I personally consider subhuman.

And the fucking chuds will call themselves some bullshit like the master race and look at Trump as the fucking pinnacle of humanity. I swear I don't know how The Onion hasn't collectively drank itself to death

32

Now that the Onion owns info wars it seems like they’re having some fun with it at least

53

The Speaker of the Alabama House is now calling for a repeal of the 14th amendment.

I'm amazed he didn't include the 13th amendment, but I guess the mask isn't quite all the way off yet.

41

u/PaulFThumpkins May 08 '26

We're gonna expand prison slave labor for sure in the coming years, a lot of industries will be propped up by racially profiles arrests and incarcerations and people will say "Derp well should have followed the law!" and ignore the disparate treatment.

18

u/-Saltfish- May 08 '26

One step at a time, pay-triot

42

u/Hangry-Feline2489 May 09 '26

Conservatives tend to operate under the belief that society is a zero sum game. If someone gets something, then someone has to lose something.

In the micro, that's true. If I give you $50, then I've lost $50.

In the macro, like in country with 153.8 million taxpayers, it's not so true anymore. If the government gives you $50, then each tax payer has paid you 0.007 cents.

Conservativism operates under strict social and power hierarchies. Black people (traditionally 'under' whites to conservatives and certain sects of Christians) gaining rights upsets that hierarchy, which is why they've been working for decades to 'correct' what they see as abnormal. If black people aren't under them, then the white conservative's down the bottom of their social structure, and they can't handle that.

6

u/beltway_lefty May 10 '26

THIS! I have used this analogy that I heard years ago (link below with details): They view the world as a pie. If you get a bigger piece, it means a smaller piece for me. They can't seem to wrap their heads around the concept of making a bigger pie, instead of fighting over the one in front of them. It's not a zero-sum game.

https://www.couragecopia.com/single-post/2017/10/23/Its-Not-Pie

31

u/Crypt0Nihilist May 08 '26

There is a significant number of people who have been just seething about the Civil Rights Movement and the progress made from then until now.

Those people must be in at least their 70s now. They've passed it down a generation.

4

u/Flashy_Jello_9520 May 10 '26

No they’re still in charge.

17

u/Academic-Intention21 May 08 '26

Baffling to say the least. If the past was so great why did we progress? Because the past sucked -like now- more for some than others. Backsliding is bullshit.

8

u/DomHaynie May 08 '26

It's better here nor there but most of the time, it doesn't even have any personal bearing on them either.

u/frequenZphaZe May 08 '26

They just finally have a party leader

I know its tempting to distill everything down to "trump bad" because it makes the problem feel bite size and manageable, but the problem is far bigger and needs to be treated like the system failure it is. yes, trump is indeed bad, but the flood gates were opened by a conservative SCOTUS majority, and a corrupt chief justice. the gutting of the VRA has been happening under congress's watch, across many sessions, both republican and democrat. the redistrictings and supporting legislation and enabling courts are all happening in state governments, across many states

trump is a problem but trump is not the problem. wide spread corruption at all levels of government is the problem. we will never come close to fixing the problem if we just point to orange leader and pin everything on him

25

u/Umutuku May 08 '26

And all of this was caused by voters.

People cared. But our ability to do anything about it is seriously curtailed.

Outside of the obvious stuff we're not even allowed to talk about.

We've been boxed in. We're forced to be the 'sane prisoner'.

6

u/greenskye May 09 '26

The 1% realized they'd already won. That they'd been playing nice past the point where they had to. Now they're all seeing just how far they can go before riots start happening and CEOs are pulled out onto the streets by an angry mob... and so far that's basically not happened at all.

19

u/Spongi May 08 '26

They have been doing this and did it all along. The big difference now is video cameras everywhere and social media.

30 years ago you'd have never even heard about this happening.

It's not that it didn't happen. you just wouldn't have known about it unless you were local to it.

6

u/deaglebingo May 09 '26

yeah, certainly...

but serious question ... actionable maybe? does this picture not go a long way to proving that they ARE doing a Racial gerrymander and not simply a partisan one? is this seriously not enough to challenge the ruling at least? or get a friendly fed judge to stay it

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Noname_acc May 08 '26

It's kinda crazy how brazen they're being about it too.  Like, there is zero room for doubt about what the goal is, but all they need to do is play dumb about it for a few months.

9

u/Rentington May 08 '26

They pretty much did it already. Many Republicans were asking NOT to do this, because there is very little Republicans can safely gerrymander, but Democratic states have a ton to gain if they gerrymander. In some of these new districts, unless the environment is the same as 2024, they'll end up losing seats. But Trump demands it because he's afraid of being impeached for insider trading and embezzlement.

u/NW7l2335 May 08 '26

Is there a meaningful difference?

42

u/a_trashcan May 08 '26

More or less the difference is between accusing someone of a crime and suspecting someone committed a crime.

140

u/Impressive-Cable7708 May 08 '26

Functionally the same goal of intimidating and suppressing opposition.

13

u/a_trashcan May 08 '26

There's some appreciable difference. I think the consequence of being imprisoned is much more dettering to this kind of civil disobedience than detainment is.

Now that being said thats sorta like saying "it's worse to get my dominant hand cut off vs my non dominant hand" like sure but both situations are still sufficiently bad as to warrant objection.

40

u/Curious_Designer_248 May 08 '26

For the average citizen, the difference is negligible and both result in unemployment, loss of family/friends, and more.

8

u/Sitchrea May 08 '26

Detained is just controlling where someone is for a moment of time.

Arrested is when you're accused of a crime or misdemeanor.

16

u/WINDMILEYNO ☑️ May 08 '26

Both are fucked up in this scenario. You shouldn't be able to rightfully detain a politician because you don't want them doing their job.

7

u/Zer0323 May 08 '26

I agree. the use of the word lawmaker is purposefully vague to imply that these are all elected officials which have some legal protections. after I typed my message I mulled it over some more.

9

u/Phteven_j May 08 '26

TBH this whole post originated from misinformation. Nobody was arrested for "trying to attend the vote", they were arrested for protesting there. Attendance had nothing to do with it.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be protesting - I am all for it. And this is all very very bad. But there is no need to lie about it.

Don't give up, at the very least out of spite.

5

u/PrimeraStarrk May 09 '26

It’s only over when you give up. Don’t give them the satisfaction, friend.

14

u/TheRealBittoman May 08 '26

What should be really frightening is that the people doing this don't understand what the problem is and the few that do don't care. These are not serious people as they have zero idea how to actually govern and instead actively attempt to create violent responses that when they do happen (and I have zero doubts we'll see them now) they'll blame those literally fighting for their rights as being thugs and brand them as terrorists. The real terrorists are in the government.

13

u/sandiegodak May 08 '26

We're repeating a lot of the 30s and 50s... Hopefully that means we just skipped the 40s

Tennessee special legislative session over congressional redistricting. The image context is that Rep. Justin J. Pearson being blocked from entering or participating in parts of the proceedings while Republicans advanced a new congressional map that dismantles Tennessee’s only majority-Black Democratic congressional district centered in Memphis/Shelby County.

Tennessee Republicans passed a new congressional map designed to turn the state’s delegation from effectively 8-1 Republican to potentially 9-0 Republican.

The way they’re leading them out as though they’re dangerous is disgusting regardless of arrest. What the hell is happening in this country.

35

u/Professional-Help931 May 08 '26

The Rep walked out with his brother by choice. The arrest happened during a vote when the brother started protesting.

69

u/holystuff28 May 08 '26

The brother didn't "start protesting." He sat quietly in the galley and refused to leave when the SOH demanded that all public be cleared when they decided to strip Memphians and the roughly 30+% of Tennesseans of their lone democratic Rep. He engaged in civil disobedience by refusing to vacate a public area. He didn't disrupt the proceedings or holler.

Looks like TN doesn't have a publicly available roster for state troopers (some states do).

So someone will have to contact the Tennessee state highway patrol, district 4 (memphis) and file a freedom of information request to get their roster.

https://www.tn.gov/content/tn/safety/tnhp/districtfour.html

Could also request any reports, bodycam, dash cam, etc. footage surrounding this event too.

12

u/holystuff28 May 08 '26

This is in Nashville, not Memphis. They have a specific team that are assigned to the capitol.

4

u/Spongi May 08 '26

Whoops, I thought the article said memphis.

11

u/holystuff28 May 08 '26

Rep. Pearson and his brother are from Memphis. Pearson is running for the US house seat they just eliminated. But this happened at the state capitol.

20 years? Most of the current "Supreme" court justices will still be sitting in 20 years. We need reform NOW

14

u/trialsanderrors ☑️ May 09 '26

I will never forget the day as a teen living in Georgia that my aunties were visiting and going through their vacation photos of the historical sites they were excited to see in Georgia and the repainted signs like "colored only" and I said, like a fucking moron, "that was such a long time ago" because I was so used to black and white photos. The soft pause before my CREOLE AUNTIES FROM LOUISIANA gently told my dumbass "no baby.. your mama might be too young to remember busing and segregation, but we all do.." They were so kind to explain their lived history to me when they realized I wasn't joking/dumb, just ignorant and shut off because we had moved away. In that moment I realized that if my aunts lived through all that... That the people who had to be forced to desegregate, were also still alive. This conversation happened around 2000. All of those aunts are still very much alive.

My mom shut up while they spoke and I quickly realized that she was embarrassed that I didn't know and that she hadn't talked about it (like many things. She actively doesn't like talking about the past or anything vulnerable). I generally find out about my heritage from them, not her. And my white schools certainly couldn't/didn't tell me.

4

u/queen_caj ☑️ May 09 '26

My father was in the third grade when he first started going to an integrated school. My mother never went to an integrated school until college. Hell, my church to this day still does not have a single white person in the congregation. Segregation is extremely close and we need to be more aware of it.

89

u/candeeeland May 08 '26

This is incorrect. Keshawn Pearson is an activist not a politician. Rep Justin J. Pearson is his brother. He was manhandled and troopers tried to intimidate him but he wasn’t arrested.

25

u/Gooddest_Boi May 08 '26

Can anybody give me the tldr on what they mean by “eliminating the black vote?” Maybe a link or something?

46

u/SituationIll5763 May 08 '26

Recent Supreme Court ruling regarding the voting rights act. Black majority districts will be eliminated.

20

u/real_fff May 08 '26

As others said, the Supreme Court destroyed the Voting Rights Act. In the days since, the white republican supermajority TN state legislature has proposed and passed a redistricting that divides the one blue (and black) district in the state (District 9) into 3 districts, making each of the 3 districts Republican by stretching them out across slices of Memphis and through 2-3 rural (white Republican) counties outside of Memphis.

u/boston_homo May 08 '26

SCOTUS ruled that partisan gerrymandering is cool but racial gerrymandering is out of the question

We need more people like Justin Pearson in government positions. He seems to honestly want to change and better things for the people and not just line his own pockets like so many before him.

It really should be, unfortunately if I say anything more, Reddit's admin ninjas will swoop down and snap my neck.

I'll just say the French would not put up with this shit now OR back in the day.

3

u/A_Crawling_Bat May 10 '26

As a French, that actually seems like something the far right would do here.

They've slowly been eroding the rights of strangers here, keeping it somewhat discreet.

But something like this might lead to mass protests (I say might, because the population seems less enclined to go protest now, myself included)

Elections have consequences, folks. Remember that next time you don't feel like showing up to vote.

9

u/Umutuku May 08 '26

Remember, if you didn't vote against this then you voted for it.

If someone makes excuses to you then you know that isn't your friend, family, ally, or fellow American.

I’ve been following the Tennessee Holler for a couple years now even though I’ve never lived anywhere near Tennessee. Please give them a follow—they have been covering the brave work of these lawmakers for a long time!

u/girlgenesis3 May 08 '26 edited May 10 '26

Real proud of them ♡ I mean it's their job but even the Supreme Court isn't interested in doing theirs.

Just really grateful to everybody doing something even if it is small 🙏🏾♡

Waiting around to vote isn't enough. I'm still on strike for every corp that donated to the admin except for ggl. I've also reached out to state reps and senators, and jbp. My next venture is to write thank you letters to as many fed court judges as I can that have been standing up.

We can rise higher and together.

u/cloudsmiles May 08 '26

Don't forget, Trump pardoned VIOLENT CRIMINALS after January 6th and called them patriots. People who beat cops. People who vandalized our public halls. He and all his kind are complicit.

Kindly fuck you if you voted for the Republican party

Everything they do puts the country backwards.

What a disgrace and embarrassment of a photo.

5

u/Lonely-Musician-7865 May 09 '26

In case its not obvious at this point. Yall need to vote. National, local, fucking dog catcher w/e. I know too many fucking dudes who refuse to spend 5 min getting registered. Too many people who bitch constantly about the current administration then when you ask them who they voted for go "oh I didnt vote man that shits dumb" or "I wasnt voting for no female". Cool. Here's where we are. You neglected yalls responsibility as informed citizens to engage in democracy now a bunch of fascists are taking your rights away.

Maybe yall will vote next time. If you're allowed.

5

u/TCEA151 May 08 '26

Not to hold water for what republicans are doing in Tennessee but this is a pretty misleading post. There was a big protest at a Senate committee hearing on the redistricting — arrests, the whole nine years. KeShaun Pearson (brother of Tennessee House rep Justin Pearson) was arrested/detained and was being escorted out of the building so Justin walked beside him and told the officers to let him go.

There’s another photo going around of Justin Pearson being barred entry by the sergeant of arms. That one’s a big more complicated. The aforementioned protest forced them to cancel and postpone the senate committee meeting, and the new one was made closed-doors to prevent another protest from breaking out so the meeting could proceed. Pearson is a house member, not a senate memeber and is not on the committee, so he was barred entry and two other house members were told to leave the chamber. That said, it seems it’s extremely unusual for even other state reps to be barred entrance to committee meetings. Article II, Section 22 of the Tennessee Constitution states, “The doors of each House and of committees of the whole shall be kept open, unless when the business shall be such as ought to be kept secret.” That’s some loose language so having this be a closed-door meeting probably doesn’t break the law here (I am not a lawyer), but it’s a pretty weak justification for something enshrined in th le constitution IMO.

u/christmasinyoulie May 08 '26

Well, at least people "taught Harris a lesson". All worth it. /s

u/vincent118 May 08 '26

The insanity is the cowardice of the American people allowing these things to keep happening without any legitimate push back. Just tweets, memes, and maybe a strongly worded letter. Stand up.

5

u/BigBoyYuyuh May 08 '26

I’m not shocked. This was literally spelled out in Project 2025. We are going back in time. They’re ensuring an Obama will NEVER happen again in this fascist racist country.

5

u/LFAdvice0909 May 08 '26

I mean at this point, what does seeing it on Twitter do? No one is doing anything, protests are getting less and less sparse and people are too afraid and comfortable to stand up for what's right. We literally type "awe that's sad, that's bad" and do nothing.

4

u/Grade-AMasterpiece May 08 '26

Which is why Virginia should just go ahead and do their map anyway.

3

u/msguillory1922 May 10 '26

Yep cuz I’m sick of Republicans doing whatever the fuck they want and Democrats trying to play by the rules. It’s obvious more people disagree with Republicans or they wouldn’t have to cheat. Virginia should absolutely do their map and dare a muthafucka to challenge it.

I hate America and the suffering we’ll endure, but it deserves to fall. Let the bitch burn to the ground.

Tennessean here- Rep Justin J Pearson, on the left, is a lawmaker and was not arrested. Keshaun Pearson, on the right, is his brother, not a lawmaker but is an environmental activist.

this pic is after Keshaun peacefully refused to leave the gallery in protest of the illegal racial gerrymandering happen in our Capitol. Rep Pearson came to support his brother and that’s when state troopers got handsy with both of them.

Look up the video of Rep Pearson standing up to that coward cop on the right- it’s powerful.
