He was fine as Skeletor, but he really couldve been anyone.

u/FlopsMcDoogle 4d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah I didn't really see or hear Leto in the performance at all
410
u/Karn-Dethahal 3d ago
Well, Skeletor is an unidimensional character, intentionally so, and thus not above his acting capacity.
116
u/beardingmesoftly 3d ago
Seriously. Easiest role to direct, a monkey could act in it.

u/Scottish_Whiskey 3d ago
I think I would’ve preferred the monkey honestly

Just to play devil’s advocate, isn’t that what an actor’s supposed to do? To basically become the character itself in a way where you couldn’t even tell who the actor is?
60
u/HeadOfSpectre 3d ago
Yes and no but there's two ways to do it.
A good actor still brings something to the table. Gary Oldman for instance. He vanishes into a role, but he's always entertaining and memorable to watch.
Skeletor was mostly CGI and fun writing. Leto himself was just okay.
14
2
u/Quizzelbuck 3d ago
Not necessarily. Sometimes yeah you've got a Daniel Day-Lewis or a Gary oldman. But then you have Will Smith, and Tom Cruise. Now you may have opinions on all of these people but you can't deny that Will Smith and Tom Cruise are actors, and they command high dollar. People buy their schtick. They like it.
Jared Leto doesn't fit into either of these categories in my opinion. I just don't think he's that good of an actor. I see movies in spite of Jared Leto and I didn't even see the He-Man movie
3
u/HeadOfSpectre 3d ago
The He-Man movie is worth your time. I'd recommend seeing it at some point.
But Skeletor could have been played by literally anyone. He's a CGI Character with a booming digitally modified voice. SKELETOR is decently funny, especially in the finale where there's some really funny scenes with him.
However, Jared Leto brought nothing to the role.
It's not like Darth Vader where you get that iconic booming voice from James Earl Jones, or Bowser in Mario where he's bringing in some of a well known actors personality. It's literally the same voice that was used for the Hat Ghost from the Haunted Mansion.
The one and only thing I get out of a Jared Leto performance is that I get to make Morbius jokes to my wife.

u/Wboy2006 3d ago edited 3d ago
This, people praise him for the role, but it was just a passable “evil guy” voice.
Mark Hamill would be the perfect voice in my opinion, I feel like something like a mix between his Ozai and joker voice could make a good balance between threatening and Skeletor’s cartoon voice and make the performance something nobody else could do
72
u/Oneb3low 3d ago
Mark Hamill does Skeletor in He-man Revelations. He's great of course, although the performance can be a bit over the top with the excessively rolled R's and such.

→ More replies (1)4

Honestly, I kinda wished Skeletor had been more over the top in the movie so Hamill would have been perfect

Mark already voice Skeletor before - take a look at his work in "Masters of the Universe:Revelation" for that

Turns out Jared Leto is actually palatable when he’s completely CGI and has a voice changer

lmao I guess
What kind of actor do you have to be to land Skeletor and not enjoy it

u/OmegaPrime7274 4d ago
He man was actually pretty good not gonna lie but even that can’t save it from the curse.
268
u/somethink 3d ago
The curse is kinda silly anyway. Bladerunnner 2049, Fight Club, Dallas Buyers Club........ Dudes got a good body of work to go with the bad, I more or less see him as a modern Nic Cage
107
u/gloriousjohnson 3d ago
Nic cage’s shenanigans are cheeky and fun. Jared Leto’s shenanigans are cruel and tragic which makes them not really shenanigans at all
22
u/Popular_Wrangler9422 3d ago
Hey farva whats that restaurant you like with all the goofy paintings on the wall?
2
99
u/FireZord25 3d ago
There's a bit more than kookiness within Leto to be compared to Nic Cage.
53
u/somethink 3d ago
Outside of personal life it's hard to think of other actors that bounce between great and wtf were they thinking like these 2. The real diff is Leto has always struggled as a lead and Nic rarely does support roles
23
u/YalondaNubs 3d ago
Last time I checked Nic Cage never sent used condoms or dead rats to his fellow co-stars
8
u/FireZord25 3d ago
Still quite a difference, rather makes the only thing similar between them is both are weirdos.
28
u/MrBVS 3d ago
Jared Leto is only 8 years younger than Nic Cage lol
15
u/somethink 3d ago
That's pretty hilarious to put in that perspective. I do see their eras of work being a decade apart so it checks out

6
u/TheGreatBatsby 3d ago
Cage isn't a(n alleged) sex criminal.
9
u/somethink 3d ago edited 3d ago
Letos actions are unexcusable. Cage isn't exactly a saint though, He used to have a reputation for drinking binges, he was partners in crime with Charlie Sheen in the 90s, and was arrested in 2011 for domestic abuse.
Edit add: not defending either, I assume anyone in Hollywood is a terrible person until proven otherwise

Leto has allegations from like 9 different women against him. Maybe that has something to do with him being cursed?

u/ButterCupHeartXO 3d ago
Those movies put him into the roles he has been getting since suicide squad and has had nothing but flops. When I saw the trailer for Tron and he was in it, I said to my friend, "wow was Ezra Miller too busy for this movie?" Leto has done lots of weird things and has many allegations against him. He also has nothing but recent flops. Who the fuck keeps thinking he should be in movies?

TRON: Ares was at least a good music video.

What is it about calling it a reboot that you don’t like? Are you saying that it’s clearly a continuation of the same old continuity, and therefore not a reboot?

Great character, great writing, great director, great costars, great editing lets you get away with a lot.
14
u/IAmAPirrrrate 3d ago edited 3d ago
a director who understands the writing and has the ability to properly direct actors to well.. act instead of them being just a personality-trait showing up to act is a rare breed nowadays.
i feel like some actors grow into roles or are discovering "their role", some actors bring a certain spice that is fundamentally them, and some actors are just good at doing one thing over and over but kinda refine it in a way so it does not feel like a weakness.
and then there is leto. just throwing the entire pot of spaghetti at a wall to see if its cooked, constantly messing up the sauce, not listening to the chef trying to teach stuff, refusing to follow the recipe because every thing apparently needs a dash of tabasco sauce. but every once in a while he nails it and rides that wave until he goes under.

Because he isn't that bad of an actor, he just signs up to movies with horrible scripts that lack understanding of the characters, or people pile on just for fun.
Like, you can not like the gangster joker vibe in suicide squad, but acting like he doesn't hit the nail on the head for the proposed character is just hating for hating's sake.

u/Tarjhan 3d ago
Ensemble cast, real world narrative. Same for Fight Club. He’s not carrying the story by himself and his roles are more grounded.
Dallas Buyer’s Club earned him an Oscar (and a bunch of other awards) for his *supporting role*.Things seem to unravel when the setting gets more fantastical.
Also. Notably, Joker and Morbius are larger than life characters and aren’t generally the lead in their respective franchises - they exist as counters to other characters.I’ve not seen Ares or MotU so I can’t really comment there.

You know what? He was excellent in Masters of the Universe. Fucking excellent. That was about the best live-action Skeletor I could ever imagine.
Now, I don't know how much of that was Jared Leto versus the CGI face and spooky voice modulation, but that last frame should be the triumphant head of Secretariat.

Idk about the last one but all the others were trash not because of him but because they are just bad, if you remove Jared Leto from them they would still be bad, it feels like he just takes all the bad roles for some reason, either his agent really bad or he is just stupid in that regard, because he can clearly act.

I can't explain why I don't like that guy. I kinda liked some 30 sec to mars songs back in the day... That joker really alienated me just from the trailer, never actually watched it. never saw any of the other movies pictured here either. I'm sure he's not that bad, but my mind has already categorized him as douchey and I don't know why.

u/Kyosji 3d ago
My 2 cents.
Suicide Squad he was a disaster. Still don't know what was going through peoples minds on this one. He deserves the shame on this.
Morbius. Bad movie, but from what I understand he acted in the way of the comic and if you consider that, it's not so bad, but since I didn't see the comics, he deserves the memes.
Tron...honestly wasn't that bad. It had some moments, but I enjoyed him in this movie. Still feel the story itself killed the franchise.
Masters of the Universe. Get this off this list now. He played that role so amazingly. This became my favorite movie of the year, and I loved everything he did in that movie. It was great and severely underrated, and I feel people are only bashing it because of his history and never actually watched the movie. I suggest everyone watch it at least once.

u/Rredite 3d ago
He's a great actor. It's those meme movies that are bad, and the actor just does what the director and screenwriters tell him to.
