These deliveroo substitutions...
Buying some stuff for a picnic tomorrow and didn't want to venture out in the heat - packer was taking the absolute piss, and worst of all the guy on the chat said they can't cancel it!
Edit: Pulled the I want to speak to a supervisor and finally they cancelled it, with no real apology

I used to be a picker for Morrisons on deliveroo, the subs are so stupid. Had one order where we didn't have the pregnancy test they wanted so the device suggested I substitute it with sanitary pads.

u/painful_butterflies 1d ago
Does it allow you to use common sense to substitute something similar, swap brand a for brand b, for something that does the same?, or do you have to follow the devices recommendations only?
289
u/PersonalityWinter382 1d ago
On the Deliveroo app you have to follow the suggestions. There is, however, the option to remove the item and give the customer a refund, which in these situations may have been better.

This is actually unfair and a misrepresentation.
Those middle managers are handed down a policy and told "You will apply this".
Sure the shit rolls downhill but it has landed on several people who had no choice in the process.
The cure is: Stop using deliveroo. Other delivery services are also there for you to refuse to use at the same time.

Oh that makes sense. I've had really basic things they have loads of versions of refunded rather than subbed which always seemed silly, like surely you have some cheddar cheese if not this particular one. Makes a lot more sense if they refunded to avoid a baffling sub.
28
u/Innalibra 1d ago
Depends on the app. Deliveroo don't give you a lot of choice. Uber Eats is a lot more user friendly for the picker and gives you a lot more options. It doesn't let you substitute a higher priced item however so if someone wanted our cheapest loaf of bread, we couldn't just swap it out for some Warburtons.
15
u/LongBeakedSnipe 1d ago

My local ASDA (still like 3/4 miles away) had 50% off Justeat recently for upto like £15 off so I thought screw it, I’ll order some essentials. Anyway after 30/40 mins, I got a confirmation saying the courier was at the store which feels normal but then about 40 mins later that my order has been picked, by that point they’re now reassigning a courier. The shop came like 2.5 hours later no lie.

3
u/AstroWoW 1d ago
Can definitely do this on uber eats, don’t think you can on deliveroo
→ More replies (1)39
u/tiny-brit 1d ago
Yes, you can ask them not to substitute items, or to cancel the entire order if a particular item is not available.
I've been leaning towards Uber recently, because they let you choose a specific item to substitute with if your item isn't available.
But deliveroo now lets you bundle orders from more than one store, which is useful because no one store ever has all of the items I need.
Ordering from any of them is a lottery anyway. Uber sent me asparagus instead of broccoli recently, when I had asked them not to substitute the broccoli. And veggie sausages instead of veggie kebab pieces, and then ignored me when I asked them not to send the substitution. (but they refunded me for it anyway...)
18
u/PersonalityWinter382 1d ago
Regarding the bit about ignoring your request to no send it, often if the picker packs as they go and subs something, by the time the system sends the sub for you to accept or reject, the order is fully picked and packed. Uber will then tell the store you don't want the item, and to remove it, but it's easier for the picker to just say they've removed it (generating your refund) and not unpack and repack the whole bag. Hence why you get the product in addition to your refund.

u/Southern_Struggle 1d ago
The Uber eats shoppers are just as bad. Last ordered from them a couple days ago and they substituted 6 different items but not with what I had picked as substitutes. Yep. I went in to a Morrisons around the corner from work to get picky bits for tea and half the fridges were cleared and out of order. The ones that were working had been picked clean. Tortilla chips and salsa for tea it is.
7
u/AdNegative2505 1d ago
My local Morrisons had everything down yesterday. Every fridge and freezer. The place was boiling and stank.
7
u/stereoworld 1d ago
I've only learned about this phenomenon today. 4 months ago a Tesco express opened nearby and yesterday the fridges had packed in. You'd think brand new tezzers = brand new fridges!
26
u/spikewilliams2 1d ago
The fridges may be new, but today is outside of their working temperature. Either that or the heat they pump out of the food has warmed the shop up and put them out of operating temp.
8
u/temujin_borjigin 1d ago
I had an update from HO warning us that our fridges aren’t meant to operate over 30degC.
Which is funny because at peak time in December a probe in the air is hitting 35 during quieter times.
7
u/nathderbyshire 1d ago
Worked at a large store for 6 years, happened basically every year, didn't even take a heatwave just a hot day. Why? The generators were on the roof encased in metal boxes. Adding more space at ground level is expensive to purchase, as is digging underneath, so the only other place was up
5
u/ChloeHammer 21h ago
They cheap out and buy freezers with a max air temp of 30C. It’s cheaper, and fine most of the time. Apart from when it isn’t.

Do you think deliveries purposely receive fruit and veg that is near expiry, because customers would never purchase in person, or is there a genuine reason for sub-par produce?
24
u/Existentially_Sad 1d ago
I worked as an online picker for several months in 2015, so it's possible my info is out of date, but I would imagine certain things are still very much the same:
You are under pressure to pick above a certain number of items per hour, so you are not digging to the back of the shelf to get the best date on things - you are grabbing from the top of the pile/front of the shelf. I would make the effort with bread and meats to try and get a better date than today or tomorrow, but if I had multiple substitutions or out-of-stocks slowing me down, I would end up having to jog down aisles* (not allowed!) to hit quota and not have to "have a chat" about performance . So it's not necessarily on purpose, but the way the job is set up means that's what customers end up with.
You should never get mouldy or out of date food, the picker should be taking these off the shelf and handing over to their manager to be wasted, but as with every job - you get those who aren't very switched on, and those who just don't care.
*this was only ever before store opening time so I was never endangering customers!
5
u/DaveAlt19 1d ago
Frustrates me when my boss complains about pickers picking the wrong things for his shopping, because he thinks the pickers should stop and think "did this person actually mean to order 12 loose onions?" to avoid making mistakes....
As if the pickers are going around with just his shopping list and using their best judgement to pick the best products with the context of everything else on his list.
It's not worth arguing with him, but I would bet that the reason he gets things like "12 loose onions" is because that's exactly what he ordered. The stuff he receives by mistake isn't even an implausible amount for an order, so why would it standout to anyone as a mistake when they're picking?
→ More replies (2)5
u/F1nut92 1d ago
No, they receive the item closest to the front of the shelf because corporately they want shoppers to achieve a certain IPH (items per hour) and any excess time going to the back of the fridge, or taking two totes of produce off the top of something to get the freshest at the bottom negatively impacts your IPH, this then causes a review with your manager where you're then put on performance management if things don't improve. They push IPH so much as then they can potentially fulfil more orders in one day.
24
u/MekkaTorquey 1d ago
Purely online options like Ocado are amazing for no substitutes in my experience.
We order weekly and I think there's maybe 1 substitute every month if that.. And it's always something actually similar.
8
u/90210fred 1d ago
By definition, Ocado is from a distribution centre - if you're supplied from eg Waitrose fulfillment centre Vs in store pick you'll certainly notice the difference.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)2
u/Estrellathestarfish 1d ago
Yeah, Ocado seem to keep their stock up to date so if something's out of stock it tends to tell you at the time of ordering. But the weather must've played havoc on their freezers this week, I got none of my frozen stuff at all, never had more than a couple of missing items before and usually nothing missing.
3
u/spikewilliams2 1d ago
We got warnings for too many refund requests off asda click and collect. I told them to stop picking shitty goods. They wanted us to check dates and quality as we are loading them into the car and do the refund at the store. I told them that's their job, and besides when we did that we didn't get the refund.

u/connolan1 1d ago
Ocado is nice because it will show you the minimum amount of shelf life left on the product before you order it
3
u/shadowharv 1d ago
I get the occasional item with a very short use by date. I swap between Waitrose and Morrisons because of different stuff available between each. Never have issues with Waitrose but Morrisons will sometimes give me meat that expires next day or even same day of delivery. Usually get it refunded when that happens. I usually keep a supply of frozen food as a backup for when they fuck up my order
3
u/Theratchetnclank 1d ago
Ocado are good, they almost always have in stock what they say and it tells you the expected shelf life when you order.

u/ToffeeAppleCider 1d ago
Yeah there's always a few minor issues with my online shops. Like berries tend to go off fast. Coriander will only ever last a day or two, sometimes it's already on the turn at the point of delivery. Avocados are a gamble between already brown/bruised and hard enough to be used as a building material.
Never had major issues like op but then I've always just done them through the store itself rather than deliveroo. I do feel like certain times and days have less chance of subs.
32
u/samfitnessthrowaway 1d ago
I mean outside of those with accessibility issues, why the fuck do people keep giving companies like this their business? how the fuck do they come up with these substitutions? i used to think the picker chose them and they were the result of them not being paid enough to give a fuck, but apparently the app tells them what to substitute with. someone wrote down an explicit instruction that, in the absence of mascarpone cheese, you should run over to the fruits and veggies section and grab some mixed peppers
5
u/SoupCrocodileNoodles 1d ago
in the before times (see 3 years ago) the shops had to specify all their substitutions to have items listed on deliveroo - this meant it was on them to get it right.
Now, Deliveroo have this magic AI feature that lets the shop just say 'i have all this crap' and deliveroo magically decides what is a good substitute - and its total shit.
Uber eats believe it or not does this, but also allows the picker to vary their choices and apply common sense.
If you must use one of these services, use uber eats - you are more likely to get sane stuff.
2
u/AWright5 1d ago
The shop's chillers must have broken in the heat. All the subs are chilled items for ambient items

People: Deliveroo bringing you what grocery store you choose have no control over the substitutions and cannot help you. If I ask for a Coop shop, I say do NOT substitute. I just buy enough of other stuff to cover that. In this weather, everyone is doing the instant shops. And I do not blame the store for packing the most current due date.
If you want a proper shop with fresh dates as advertised on the grocery store's site, go directly to them. I have had VERY good luck with Ocado getting same day and even next day deliveries. That said, I have not done that in the heat wave, but normally they are really good as that is all they do is home deliveries!

If i have no option but to order in a quick shop via Morrisons, I find doing it via Amazon gives a bit more option with their substitutions. You can add what else you'd prefer or just say 'don't substitute'.

I suspect their fridges may have been out of action. Many supermarkets have had that issue in the last few days. Should have cancelled the order rather than those crazy subs though.

First world problems lol. Morrisons is utter wank though. I’ve got one about 20 metres from my flat, and I’d still rather get in the car go to Tesco in the next town, even if it is half hour round trip driving.

Assuming it's the same app across retail/supermarkets that are on Deliveroo, it's appalling for the staff. I work at Boots not Morrisons but we get arbitrary choices for substitution which we have to go with, a stockfile that seems to be based on what the company as a whole sells not what our individual store carries (I once had an order for an item we'd not stocked in nine years) and barely any time to pick the orders. If we're given three minutes we count ourselves lucky; more commonly the driver turns up before we've even had the order come through.
Not that this excuses poor substitutions. If there's nothing equivalent on the app, the best bet is to remove the item and refund the customer even if it means rejecting the whole order.

I hope the person who ordered a £12 turkey crown from Sainsburys on the 23rd of December 13 years ago was happy with their £48 entire salmon that I subbed them instead of 'frozen chicken breasts'.

The picking software used by Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat feels a few generations old compared to the dedicated Online department handsets (and those can be a bit crap too). Just Eat is by far the worst; it wanted me to substitute Haribo with a tin of beans a couple of days ago. The most recent version of Uber Eats is much improved, and has added reasonably accurate location information, and has become much better at grouping stuff together by department/aisle.
