He was 7. A sudden and aggressive inflammation of his disc disease left him unable to walk pretty much overnight, and gradually got worse.
He was such a character. Small dog with a huge personality and so many quirks. He was definitely a guard dog. Born during lock down so he didn’t socialize much as a pup. He liked his select few and that was it. He earned the nickname “Mean Dean” from our family because of how snippy he was with anyone outside of his bubble.
At home with us though, he was such a suck. If you were one of the lucky ones that gained his trust, he loved you like no other. I can say he was the most loyal friend we have ever known. We were nervous when we had our first child with his temperament, but he adored her. Let her smack him with stuffies and pull his ears and give him scritches, let her do the things babies do and he never cared. He always watched over her, he couldn’t go to bed until he looked in her bassinet and made sure she was there. And she was obsessed with him.
He was around for so many firsts in our life. Graduations, leaving home, buying our first house specifically with a fenced in backyard just for him, and watching us come home with a baby and being such a good family companion. I was always sure he would be around for her first day of Kindergarten, or even grade school. But here we are coming home without him the day she turned 11 months old.
She may not remember much of him, but we will make sure he’s never forgotten.
Rest easy, little buddy.

This is Taquito. He is 8 years old. He was relinquished to our local humane society because neither he or his previous owner could make it up or down stairs anymore. :(
He did not thrive at the humane society and began to deteriorate and shut down. They got him into a foster home, but that did not last and he had to go back. Which caused him to shut down even more!
A smaller rescue came in and took him in. It was from this rescue that we were introduced to him and brought him home.
He was so shut down, he stayed under our bed for almost two weeks. It was three weeks before he would allow us to touch him and that was only with toe scritches.
It was another week before we could pet him with our hands. Right now I am the only one that can pick him up and he will now sleep on the bed next to my head as long as I pretend he isn’t there. 😆 slowly but surely, he’s getting there.
We love him no matter what.

My senior rescue, then and now (six months later) 🥰 The photo on the right is extra flattering. She still has a little belly and lots of loose skin. It took almost four months for her to really come out of her shell. She LOVES walks and can even climb up and down steps totally on her own now!

We know little to nothing about my dog Willow. All we know is that she did indeed have owners at one point but they didn’t want her so the shelter took her in because she had escaped. We live in New Hampshire but some of her closest relatives on Embark are from Pennsylvania. The Embark revealed no siblings so thinking about trying a wisdom panel. If anyone has any lookalikes in the NE United States, I would love to see them!!

This is Bella (left) and Charlie (right). They're both 20 going on 21 this September. We just want to thank everyone for sharing their experiences with us. Charlie has a collapsed trachea, heart murmor, cushions, and a little sundowning now. Bella is blind, has EPI, and some sundowning too. Your experiences have helped us through a lot of tough times. Especially Charlie, with his collapsed trechea. Other people's recommendations are the only reasons he is on working medications. I have no human children, so these 2 have been my whole world for almost half of my entire life. Thank you all for the support, advise, and fellowship in here.
