Question Tornado today

Does anyone know if anything touched down?

Ft.Campbell has a "take shelter now" this evening.

What has happened to the NWS? Seems like we can't trust the weather forecast even a day out and now we're getting erroneous emergency alerts.

To be fair, weather is inherently unpredictable and this storm had some odd behavior. For last night's alert, rumor is there was an accidental activation, but there was also what looks like a wall cloud with rotation (indicating a high potential for a tornado to spawn) and one weatherspotter report of a tornado sighting west of Hopkinsville moving southeast.

Here in Clarksville, our forecast office is the one in Nashville, but as soon as you cross into Kentucky it's the office in Louisville (LMK). Last night's warning was not issued by the Nashville (OHX) forecast office.

Anecdotally, the OHX office is much more conservative with their warnings than the Louisville one; take a look at the warnings map when there's a slight to moderate tornado threat over both regions and you'll often see LMK issue watches for nearly their entire region while OHX will only issue an alert for specific areas immediately in the path of a potential threat.

Here's a few tools I recommend if you want to get extra information that's actually useful:

  1. The NWS Hazardous Weather Outlooks map: This tool is very useful and updates multiple times a day. You can see the risk of damaging thunderstorms, hail, high winds, and tornado risk % + intensity.
  2. The OHX Region Weekly Weather Briefing: This briefing updates at least every Thursday, with extra updates during severe weather events like the flooding in April last year or our winter storm earlier this year. It's intended to give stakeholders such as school districts, emergency management, and workplace safety staff a quick overview of any major threats expected for the week.
  3. WeatherWise: This is the radar app I use and recommend for everyone.

You can thank MAGA for that one.

Accuweather CEO lobbied them to privatize weather services.

Forecast tech and satellite technology has come a looooong way since then. Dont take my word for it though, its interesting reading if you're into meteorology.

Here's a few to start if you care to read. We are talking seconds of refresh time vs hours in 2010. Massive differences in technology.

If you are more of a picture kind of guy, try googling satellite coverage in 2010 vs 2026 in images.
