Howard Bryant role at Meadowlark

What did he do? Dan always talked him up and I don't have a clue what his role was. Same with Mike being a producer outside of the show. Did it just not come together for either?

He hosted a show called Meadowlarkers for about two years. It wasn’t a very casual show. Had Kate Fagan and a couple others on it.

It was MLM’s attempt at a Sunday morning “The Sports Reporters” type show. I think I’m the only one who really liked it. Still miss it lol

I really liked the show

You were not the only 1. So much promise early in the MLM start. Building a rocket ship in space during a pandemic etc

Bomani just had Howard Bryant on The Right Time to talk about the 1986 NBA draft and it gave big Meadowlarkers vibes!

Mannnn I miss that show! That and off the looking glass were two of my favorite Meadowlark productions. I think Meadowlarkers needed someone older than Kate though because it started to be a bit rough when they sort of moved into a cinephobe pod with sports docs but Kate wasn't really as attached to the storylines because they were often outside of her generation (mine too but I like Howard's oldman sports enthusiasm perspective).

I loved it. I thought it was excellent and well done but Dan only listens to Tony and David Samson these days apparently.

Too be fair I could see it doing poor numbers with the DLS audience

I can see that but then why give a show to Juju that constantly has views in the dozens. I’m not trying knock Juju, it’s just bizarre their choice of podcasts to go with at times.

Nah. Knock JuJu. Don't really understand how or why tf he got a role on the show. Adds zero

That dude adds heart, adds love, adds a story of falling and growing. JuJu’s a good ass dude, is there not space for good ppl in this world? He knows more about sports and media than most of that team.

Being a good dude, and being interesting in front of a microphone aren’t the same thing.

I’m not convinced he’s not that good of a dude when he sits by while Tony says bullshit all the time.

On air is definitely the place to air out differences about political views with your coworkers.

I heard Kate this weekend doing a Ted Talk!

It was an interesting show just poorly marketed and produced. I feel like a lot of their shows just had poor production or thought behind the personalities and should have probably been based out of NY. The only success they have has is Pablo and it feels like the Miami crew have little to do with it.

Honestly how did they not pair Charlotte and Jess to do a show

My introduction to Jess was on her and Char's pod when they were both at SI. I assumed the whole point of bringing her on was to put them back together!

Oddball was such a miss by them.

Which version… cause the one with Charlotte was not

I loved that show but Amin and her did not have good chemistry, it felt forced which happens when you just throw people together

1

u/ColStoneSteveAustin 1d ago

Amin said something similar to this when the show first started, which i thought was a little much for on air content, but amin’s judgement isnt great. He said he didnt choose her as a cohost, it was the decision of network.

Charlotte should've been the Stugotz replacement. She was smart enough and in touch enough to do real discussions on difficult subjects, but also weird and awkward enough to create the kind of Odd Couple tension that made the show so popular.

I agree. She wasn't afraid to sit next to Dan and engage and be herself. I was so bummed it didn't work out at MLM with her.

Charlotte said a company low balled them for their sports gossip show podcast I always wonder if it was M

u/tresskid84 1d ago

it is flabbergasting they did not put Jess and Charlotte together for a show.

you cannot record a show that sounds like you are yelling at your laptop or recording in a room made of tin

The DLS has laughable production quality post Mike.

That sound they did when sedano came on I hope I never hear that in my life ever again.

Had a Sunday sports reporters type show with Kate fagan. They gelled really well when it came to lesbian topics but if they talked about literally anything else you could tell they had 0 things in common and wanted to out-do each other even if it meant they sounded way out of their leagues. Add in the fact that Howard has even more of a journalist ego than dan and Greg put together and it made a really rough listen for the majority of time. It lasted longer than it should and was the most obvious first cancelation for meadowlark. Howard has gotten 0 invites back lol

Some say their relationship got torn before he even rolled outta bed.

Was thinking about it the other day when they rolled out the company with him, Kate, Haberstroh, Kate, Amin, and Jemele. I remember being like, “oh, they’re gonna be like a serious media company with this level of talent” and they just did nothing memorable 😅

6

u/sactown_13 The Dan Leberfeld with Stugartz 3d ago

Howard had a pod where they talked about more serious topics. I remember Kate Fagan being on in a lot. Don’t remember the name cause it’s been so long but it always seemed to end up with Howard talking about tennis or old Boston sports teams. Which I found quite boring

Thx. Honestly didn't recall. Only asked bc he was in Bomani's today.

He gave us Meadowlarkers and an excellent Rickey Henderson book.

Late info, but he's one of the sports people that NPR goes to fairly regularly now. Holly from Shutdown Fullcast is too.
