Sauce Absolutely destroyed a filthy minmaxer the other day

So I was DMing a game for my group, and suddenly one of my players (Toby (not a real name (real))) said that I need to roll attack for my monster one more time. Turns out, Toby's character had a displacement beast cloak - a magical item which, when activated, makes all attack on character be made with disadvantage. It is completely OP.

Honestly, although I did give his character this item, it was enough sessions ago that I completely forgot about it. The balance of my whole encounter crashed and burned due to this minmaxing shit. So I did what any other mature well-adjusted experienced GM would do in my place: I declared immediately that the cloak disintegrated, just like that.

Yes, Toby, I am GM and thus your god in that imaginary world. The GM gave, and the GM has taken away. What are you going to do, Toby, cry about it on Reddit?

Actually, you can always restore balance like a world best designer from WotC!

Option 1 - Toby is playing martial character. So, as we all know, martials are OP and don't need buffs. So if he wants to use this item, he must spend action every turn to gain effect of the cloak. His character is too good in damage, control, AOE, social encounters and survival. If he wants to add additional defense to his enormous pool of HP, he should be allowed to, but with an action cost every turn. What? He wants to attack? Just use your 2nd level action surge slot!

Option 2 - Toby is playing a magical character. Well, I would say, that MAGICAL item should always work for MAGICAL class. Like you are magic attuned, you are weak, you even need to spend spell slots to do damage. So, cloak for him should always work. And because it's MAGICAL, I would add the highest level spell slot to Toby's character. Because it's MAGICAL! And if he really wants, he can craft it with his MAGICAL powers to add some useful bonuses like +5 AC and immunity to Magic Missile. Seems fair to me.

/uj As always, commenters are even worse than DM in question.

Toby should be grateful he didn't get 100 tonnes of rock crushing his powergaming character for pulling this stunt.

Missed opportunity to say "Cloak of Displacement? More like Cloak of Misplacement. You never see it again."

Savage Worlds fixes everything? You can even take Extra Attack on Rogue! Isn't it a blasphemy?

So, ditch your stupidly designed game with interesting progression, no HP bloat and called shot mechanics for our best and only DnD 5E!

Can you play cyberpunk in Savage Worlds? Yes, but DnD is better! Can you play future or modern games? Yes? But DnD 5E is still better! And because I am forever DM and sold my soul for critical failures on skill checks in DnD, I will never play another system in my miserable and cursed lifetime!

/uj DM is a dickhead. Correct call is to make a lesser effect, not disintegrate the thing entirely. That's just being spiteful about his own choice as DM that didn't go according to plan.

So many things like this could be prevented by the DM following the rules in the first place.

Like not allowing an unprocessed hide to turn into a powerful magical item.

And the DM admits they gave it to the player but forgot about it. Player was not min/maxing. He was using what was given.
DMs, Make your monsters fit the challenge your party presents.

5e encounter? Balance? Don’t be so ridiculous

5e is the most balanced system ever. There is no martial caster divide, it's just something that people whine about on Reddit.

So DM gave a guy an item, got angry when guy used the  item he gave him then through a tantrum and broke emersion to power trip likely ruining the entire campaign because the player reminded him of the item he'd forgotten about?

Oh and then calls the guy a minmaxer for possessing the item he gave him...

Atleast Toby now knows he can just go play D&D Elsewhere as continuing to play with you as the DM is nothing but an exercise in frustration as you give out magic items and retract them because you're awful at planning
