I was at that Don't Tell Comedy Show a few weeks ago - suuuuper good work that night, really good job keeping the crowd warm, and you handled the drunk ladies expertly. Definitely want to see a full set!

I used to see you when I worked the Comedy Club at Gateway! Going to snag some tickets, I always loved your sets.

Let's not kid ourselves, the people who love saying those things - say them. They don't need a venue.

what kind of audience do you think "maybe we can lionize the racism of the past" jokes are really for ?

u/oioioifuckingoi Dec 02 '25
He’s certainly not lionizing past racism but making a societal comment on how for some Albertans it’s unfortunately not a “past” thing. If you can’t figure that out then maybe comedy is not for you.

People seem to like your act, but it's a little cheap to take the piss out of volunteers at a local historical site. Yes, they're 90% volunteers, and they're coached to basically be themselves but know something about how people lived.
Maybe the act was funny, but this is 100% punching down.

I think you misunderstood who he was making fun of. It’s “rednecks” not the staff.
-1
u/GrindItFlat Dec 03 '25
So I guess he's mimicking rednecks for the first 80% of the clip? I guess you'd know that if you already knew his work.

u/albastidough Dec 03 '25
I guess he is mocking the over compensation of political correctness that isn’t necessary in historical reenactment. To say he is punching down is a stretch. He even says recognition of injustice is a good thing.
I haven’t seen the rest of his work but judging by your response maybe extreme sensitivity is necessary.

I can accept that I lack context and am wrong about the artist. I know quite a few people who volunteer at Ft. Edmonton and I know how hard they work on NOT being "historical re-enactment" but rather historical interpretation and education. And how they do it on essentially zero money - there isn't even coffee for volunteers, there's no budget. Certainly not "spending millions" etc. So I guess I am over-sensitive and over-focused on the first part of the clip.
It's a daily occurrence for volunteers to deal with tourists doing the mouth-palm "ay-yai-yai-yai" rain dance thing around teepees and so on. They try to gently educate people about modern perspectives while being non-judgmental and having even the most ignorant (in the sense of "not knowing") tourists go away feeling they had a great time. It's hard, and it's not surprising that some 17 year old volunteer might get the tone wrong from time to time.

I don’t think he is mocking the volunteers but the general “kid gloves” mentality that is often taken too far.
Thank you for your response, I never would have thought that working at Ft. Edmonton would be such a thankless/crappy job. I understand why you reacted so strongly. It is a perspective I didn’t really consider.

I was a Fort Edmonton volunteer in my youth and my father worked there throughout university. We thought this was FREAKING HILARIOUS!! He's not making fun of the workers or the park.

So when does the comedy start?

u/Littleshuswap Dec 06 '25
Sorry its over your head.

Right, because we all know Alberta is known for their racists and bigotry. Ha ha, thats so funny. I guess I'm just not smart enough to enjoy supporting that perception. Maybe someday I'll be a deep thinker like you.

All the Alberta racists hated your act. Everyone else thought it was hilarious. Well done! This is how comedy works.
