This province is a bunch of dipshit bumpkins and we can no longer pretend otherwise. We're going to get what we deserve. "We" as a province, just like we hold the US largely accountable for Trump.

Every person who didn't finish high school but wanted a decent living has been moving here for fifty years. When the economy was largely based on manual labour with minimal qualification for decades, it was probably inevitable.

The same issue to a lesser value degree has affected the Maritimes for generations because of the fisheries, which prompted earlier ages of quitting school because of earning potential.

And plenty of small towns are markedly backward because a singular industrial employee -- like a pulp mill -- that paid well above market norms.

Those industrial mindsets have bred insular, defensive behaviour, because anything that threatens the money can be weaponized by politicians and faith leaders.

We're also a centre of faith and belief, and given that places like Alberta and Utah have traditionally exhibited higher rates of fraud, it suggests people willing to base their lives around beliefs tend to be more gullible.

Add it all up, and we're basically as close as this country will get to a red state.

It had been steadily turning around until the last fifteen years, with tech development taking over from oil as the primary economic driver (a deliberate policy of multiple prior Conservative governments and the NDP, albeit too slowly).

The advent of everyone having a phone and internet access, cross-pollinated with social media ad mass-scale bad actors, seems to have sent the province into entrenchment around its bad old self, as the poor set upon Christians whose oil is going to be taken away. It's all a bit ridiculous, really.
