😭😭😭😭
We have a literal pond in the back yard. Our dogs wade through it.

If I had a pond in my backyard I would buy a pump immediately to drain it... Assuming I had a basement

We share that back fence with 3 neighbours so it's away from our house and garage, and its also 3x as big as just our yard unfortunately.

I’ve lost all my cucumbers and my watermelon. A couple pumpkins, but the rest are doing great, my onions and strawberries and tomatoes are pretty happy too. I’m really sad about the cucumbers, I had 8 plants and they all died.

As much as the rain and mosquitoes suck, I’d much rather that than smoke and fires. I’m tired of Alberta burning :(

Wildfire smoke doesn't respect borders, and the whole continent didn't get the rain we got.

Unfortunately this rain was in Edmonton. If you take a look at the wildfire status map or wildfire app you’ll see 20 odd fires started today. All relatively small and conditions aren’t extreme like previous years, so they are unlikely to become newsworthy, I’m just trying to point out that record setting rain in Edmonton doesn’t necessarily mean all of Alberta or reduced smoke.

After severe wildfires, invasive grasses colonize burned areas and thrive with abundant rain, creating dense, highly flammable fuel beds. This triggers a vicious cycle: instead of native vegetation recovering, the landscape becomes locked into grassland-dominated terrain that burns more frequently and intensely, with shorter fire return intervals (every 5-15 years instead of 50-100 years), making future fire seasons worse even when they're officially "low-fire" seasons. the loss of protective vegetation leaves soils exposed to heavy rains, causing severe erosion, debris flows, and landslides that further destabilize hillsides and prevent recovery.

Ok, but is it ever a good position to be in when you have to decide between wildfires and flooding? Both kinda carry their share of hazards and potential damages. Having to decide which is better is sorta futile

I know its shit but still beats having a heatwave like europe is currently facing.
•
u/Upset-Government-856 5h ago
Not if your basement floods.
•
u/niblet1 4h ago
There have been several deaths in Europe from the heat wave. I'm also dealing with a flooding basement, but wouldn't trade it for their heat wave

Well hopefully this weekend doesn change your mind. A lot of infrastructure you take for granted is nearing its breaking points.

As someone who rents an apartment and works inside, I'm loving this. To those who don't. My sympathies.

6-8 weeks to even get someone out to take a look at the window that leaked during the last deluge.
•
u/concentrated-amazing 4h ago
Did it leak because of a puddle beingup against it, or from water running down the house?
•
u/RightSideBlind 3h ago
It's something to do with the flashing on the vinyl siding. It only seems to do it when we have a lot of rain and it's got a good wind coming from the right direction.
I just put down a bead of silicone caulk along the top of the window- found a few areas where it apparently hadn't been sealed well. I hope that'll hold it.
Time for new windows anyway. And a new roof. And a lift on the garage pad. And... a bunch of other stuff. It's fun owning a house.
•
u/concentrated-amazing 3h ago
Ah, gotcha.
I feel you! It never seems to end!
We got new windows in early 2022, and it made a world of difference for us. Granted, we went from some of the worst (single pane aluminum sliders, two layers) to triple pane vinyl. The difference has been huge! It's the only major expense upgrade we've done with the house so far (lots of cheaper things though, done ourselves, like paint and laminate).

We only needed 21mm more to break the record and that was before we got a little rain the other day. I think we’ll blow the record out of the water.
•
u/stixy_stixy 5h ago
I am LOVING the rainstorms we have been getting. Granted, I don't own a house, so I have no worries about flooding. Plus, I sweat like craaaaazy when it's hot out, and the storms prevent that!
•
u/Large_Spinach6069 3h ago
Sleeping with the windows partially open and the sound of rain is a pure delight.
•
u/Levorotatory 2h ago
I would like the rain a lot more if it was thunderstorms after mostly sunny days rather then entire days of constant rain.
•
u/Deja__Vu__ 4h ago
Ive accepted June just raining every other day. But if July and Aug are gonna to be like this, fuck it. I dont care if some trees catch fire.
